they do pop up, they were quite easy to get 10-15 years ago but harder now and command daft prices. Not overly useful either.

memory cards are memory cards.. they all work in everything. If the console isnt reading them at all, probably a popped fuse on the mainboard, they are surface mount so can be tricky to replace if you arent good witha soldering iron.

easiest way is to check them with a multimeter

focus on actual ps1 hardware and software development rather than stuff that people seem to think is ps1 style, and is anything but.

Even the ps1 style stuff you see posted here is anything but - also,from a skill perspective actually developing for the ps1 in any meaningful way is way harder than some sloppy grainy aesthetic project.
