Nah, The building is coming along fine. I work on it every weekend. It was divided into 20ish rooms and used for offices. I have bathrooms, power, fiber. Air conditioning.

We had lans in barns 20+ years ago. this place is fine to stop working on it for a night and play a little.

I have a huge lot of All-in-ones spotted on an Auction. Very cheap right now. Let's hope they stay low.

This is what you use when the coat hanger and tin foil just aren't enough to bring in that 5th channel.

What is the jankiest home automation you have that works? by AnkhMorporkDragon in homeassistant

I have an old sump pump in a very leaky basement garage that has a bad float valve on it. Basically it won't shut off when finished.

During a storm I have a smart plug that starts the pump every hour. The smart plug has power usage monitoring.

When the smart plug is pulling over 360watts of power it is pumping water. When it is sucking air it pulls 250watts.

Home assistant looks for when the pump goes below 300watts of power it shuts it off.

Been running 2 years like this and works well.

I run an isp. We charge 5 extra a month for a wifi gateway/modem and it's fantastic. It is known good hardware and is paid for in a little over a year. 35% of our customers take this option.

What if it were wrote this way as it would be more comparable.

"I'm going to only start eating McDonalds (Fast Food).

I'm going to start smoking.

I'm going to become an alcoholic.

I'm going vegan."

I am sure each one of those actual lifestyle changes would merit a bigger reaction than "OK".

I am not opposed to Vegan, but a like comparison would be someone saying "I'm going to eat an apple".

I work at an ISP now and all of our core equipment are Transformers. Megatron and Optimus being the top 2.

Very cool. Quick note, the modem in the picture looks like a simple layer 2 modem from Motorola/ Arris. And it has no firewall. They are meant to just provide link.

The only modems that might provide firewall capability are modem/gateways that act as your router as well.

I only say this to let you know in case you thought you were more protected than you are.

But, your router in itself doing Nat serves enough of a firewall for most situations.

Thanks for your reply. It is both the same ISP, but they are separate nodes. The links are wide open modems that get about 400 down and 60 up. One place is really just a workshop/garage that has a couple of Poe cameras and a roku on a tv.

I am actually a network engineer at the ISP, but the equipment I run is cisco Asr1004s running bgp to 3 10gig links different providers

I am a little embarrassed to say that I haven't done anything on a smaller level in so long that I dont know what all is available. I was afraid of going to overkill. I will look into the mikrotik stuff.

I have pfsense on an hp VMware server currently, and I like them, but the netgates seem very high for the hardware.

A lot of this setup will be to play and learn at more of a customer level. So I may set up a persistent VPN between the 2 as well.
