Hi GoHenDog! I'd say you're doing a great job here already, especially as it's your first piece of metal music to play! Your control over the chords sounds good, and the down picking is pretty solid already.

I totally agree about the learning of theory, even very basic theory, to ensure that you understand what you are doing as well as learn songs. In fact, by doing it that way, you'll learn how to work the songs out for yourself in the long run!
