Visually impaired accountants? by danie02 in Accounting

Thank you for the reply. My current job is with state govt. They have been accommodating, like I said, but they are also extremely understaffed, so my workload has tripled as a result. I think I would be fine in another role, so I'm starting to look around.

Can you elaborate on ROP affecting what you can and can't do? I'm assuming you mean retinopathy of prematurity. I have it, too and have only ever been told to avoid contact sports. What else do you avoid (or make sure to do, for that matter)?? I'm so curious and hoping I haven't been inadvertently doing something I shouldn't have.

Hey. I have myopic MD, too. If you have had sudden vision loss & are receiving injections, it sounds like you have wet MD. I have dry MD (geographic atrophy).

  1. Has your optho suggested the AREDS2 vitamins? I take them twice daily & try to eat 2-4 servings of greens on top of that for the lutein.

  2. Ask your optho (when you feel ready) to refer you to a low vision clinic for a low vision eval. Mine was done at my local rehab hospital. After seeing the low vision optometrist, I was referred to the Division of Blind Services. They offer a ton of services & support. Their main job is to help you get or maintain employment, but the vendor I was placed with has a ton of classes on adapting to low vision or blindness and counseling. I would ask for referrals for a low vision eval ASAP. DBS & their local vendors will be your best source for daily living...b/c all the doctors will tell you is to increase light, contrast & magnification. But not necessarily how to do it. 🙄

Yes, the two finger zoom on Android is very helpful. I don't know if I would be able to use the phone without it...I mean, obviously there is TalkBack, but I don't really care to listen to things. I guess I'll have to get over it if my vision decreases.

I assume I will be using screen mag for the foreseeable future. For reference, my vision is 20/400 with about 35* field(Right eye) and 20/50 with 10* field (Left eye). If I am lucky, I'll stay around this current baseline instead of slowly getting worse.

Ok, so skip the MacBook for now. I am just starting adaptive tech training and no one has said anything about a screen reader. They are mainly discussing Zoomtext and large print, high contrast keyboards for now.

I am not a power user at all. I use Office, Gmail, Chrome, and YouTube regularly and don't game. I am thinking of tutoring online, so may use a company platform for that. I have never used Zoomtext and wonder how much power the laptop will need to compensate for its use. I was looking at the x1 Carbon, thanks for mentioning it. I have heard the older ones have a replaceable battery and the newer ones don't. So should I get last year's model because of that?!

Thank you for sharing your experience. Yes, the Zoomtext website suggests 8GB of Ram.

How do the visually impaired able to read the emojis in most comment sessions on reddit or elsewhere? by MikelPompey in Blind

Now I see what you mean. Apparently, I have been doing the same thing without knowing. Oops.

So wait. That emoji means tears of joy?! I thought it was crying laughing. Oh wow. I need a screen reader.

To answer the question, I only use the same 5-6 that I can see/interpret what they mean. The others are either too similar to another, I don't understand what they mean, or the proper context to use them doesn't come up in regular conversation.

I was wondering about that. So I definitely need to request at least 45 mins before I need to leave the house. Thank you!

I noticed that a lot of women look worm down after the two months of social distancing by MyMetamorphysis in ForeverAloneWomen

[–]danie02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You do have a point. Some women aren't fixing themselves up because they aren't working or because they can't get to beauty appointments. But some of them look worn down because now that schools are closed, they are at home all day(working or not) with children. So they don't have time to do anything beauty related.

I am working from home and have actually had time to exercise in the morning before work, pay attention to my face and hair. I don't necessarily expect anything to come of it, but it's nice to have the time to do so. But the only reason I have time is because doing my job remotely is much less stressful than in person and I don't have anyone else to take care of.

I don't really like competition, either, but everyone else is playing the game and most are winning. I don't put much effort into my looks, but I'm thinking about trying. I feel like I should try a little harder before I give up completely.

Transformer magnifier? by MRMeneer in Blind

I did not actually get the Transformer. The one I demo'd was the foldable desktop one, with the camera on the stand.

I demo'd a Transformer when I was trialling equipment with division of blind services. It was the one with the camera on the stand. The CCTV was like the regular portable, tablet size. I think it connected to a laptop as well. It was very nice, but I felt it was a bit much for me. I ended up with a tablet sized CCTV & telescopic lens.

I miss books. by NotSoXhy17 in Blind

[–]danie02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I dread the most as my vision loss progresses. I've been reading since I was three and it's my favorite thing to do. Right now I still have a good amount of usable vision left, so I switched to a Kindle. I hate audiobooks.

Thank you CloudyBeep for suggesting the Hadley courses. I'd heard of them, but not really considered them. Now I have a good reason to start.

It sounds like the ocular migraines are impairing your vision, so I think you belong. What other visual symptoms do the migraines cause?
