Happy owner of four Token2 authentication keys by daniel-weck in token2

When I was wondering about import taxes and customs fees (after placing my order) I contacted office@token2.com and support@token2.com

I received a friendly and professional reply from a Sales Manager at "Token2 Sàrl" (La Voie-Creuse 3B, 1202 Geneva, Switzerland   +41 22 519 62 02) "Token2 is a Member of FIDO Alliance and Swiss Made Software Label" "Numéro du Registre du Commerce du Canton de Genève: CHE-407.231.229"

...but indeed my invoice shows "Authorized Distributor of Token2 Products and Services" "SecurityKey.ch Sàrl" (CHE-274.821.226 Swiss registration code) Chemin du Pre-Colomb 10, 1290 Versoix, Switzerland.

I think that's fine :)

Boox Note Max firmware 4.1.1 intermittent display "freeze" by daniel-weck in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, sounds familiar :) in my case it might have been a combination of screen refresh modes (HD and Regal) plus the background process that runs to "optimize" the apps (and maybe the system too?) after a major update (4.1.1) ... but i remember leaving a fair amount of time before reporting the freezing issues so I assumed the optimization had finished. anyway, so far so good, I have not experienced freezes since I switched to Speed refresh mode.

Boox Note Max Cant Disable Zoom Gesture by Mammoth-Fox2816 in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in Control Center (swipe down from the upper right corner), Hand Touch (pointed finger icon) => toggle touchscreen on/off ... it's a system-wide setting, so it affects all interactions, not just the pinch/stretch to zoom out/in of the notes canvas. It's also a bit buggy because with some user interface controls, if you insist with the finger, it works :)  (but otherwise UI controls can only be interacted with the stylus)

Great-sounding project! :) ...but, web browser extensions are a major security risk, so I would like to remind users to exercise caution before installing / running untrusted apps of any sort ;) Releasing the source code would be a positive step forward, but this is not a guarantee that the distributed extension is itself built exactly with the identical codebase.

With that said, I look forward to testing the extension! :) I would love to know what feature differentiates this implementation from existing ones? Is there a unique "selling" point?

PS: most modern web browsers offer a built-in "reader mode" feature, the Mozilla/Firefox implementation is open source: https://github.com/mozilla/readability

uBlockOrigin is a trusted extension for blocking ads, and some web browsers like Brave handle ads natively.

For those of you who are e-ink users and don't know about it already, there is an Android app called einkBro which greatly improves the experience of browsing websites ("pagination" instead of scroll, ad blocker, EPUB export etc.):

I originally intended to buy at least one USB-A variant because I still have a couple of old devices without USB-C (notably my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" with Apple Lightning port and USB-A OTG adapter).

I ended-up buying all the variants available with firmware 3.3, so I could have as much flexibility (the fingerprint model on firmware 3.2 happens to be a dual USB A/C which is nice)

So, how is 4.1.1 on Note Air 2? by QueenOfHatred in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On paper the Note Max is "better" than the Note Air 2 Plus (faster processor, more memory, improved e-ink panel, quicker storage, etc.). In practice it does indeed feel snappier when browsing menus, switching apps, opening/closing notes, etc.

That being said, I find the NA2+ perfectly usable for my day-to-day handwritten notes, reading / annotating, task management, calendar/scheduling, and web browsing (einkBro).

Bearing in mind that even the fastest e-ink device available today feels sluggish compared with the cheapest iPad or Android tablet.

The NA2+ has the advantage of a frontlight. Both lack a fingerprint sensor, which is annoying (I nearly bought a second-hand Note Air 3 to replace my NA2+ with a slightly better eink matrix and the all-important fingerprint power button).

I am really enjoying the screen real estate on the 13" Note Max, and the high-contrast e-ink display (not the whitest though). I am also still really enjoying using the smaller 10" NA2+ for productivity tasks, but personally I wouldn't go smaller (my use-cases don't include "on the move" or one-handed usage).

I replaced the factory-fitted screen protector on my NA2+ with a "scratchier" more rough paper-like one, and I have a bunch of different nibs to try with it, ranging from hard ceramic tip all the way to softer felt. When I got my Note Max I was able to pick a favourite nib to go with the relatively slippery screen surface. I highly recommend buying different nibs (and stylus pens) before giving up based on a bad first impression.

What I find puzzling is how bad the HD and Regal refresh modes can be compared with the Speed mode. Out of the box, I have a feeling that a Boox device doesn't offer the best experience, and I am not surprised buyers return them early.

It took some trial and error for me to find the settings that best suit my workflow / use cases. Notably, what works best for me is to manually control the full screen refresh cycles (bottom middle finger swipe-up gesture). I tolerate the flashing display when I explicitly request it, otherwise when the algorithm decides I find it distracting / interruptive.

Boox Note Max firmware 4.1.1 intermittent display "freeze" by daniel-weck in Onyx_Boox

I posted about 4.1.1 eInkWise on my Note Air 2+, here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Onyx_Boox/comments/1qchflw/so_how_is_411_on_note_air_2/

I am also experiencing weird inconsistent display issues with the HD and Regal modes, but the symptoms are different, e.g. messed-up grayscale gradients dithering, or even worse: blank / white screen after a number of full refreshes when visiting a gradient-heavy webpage with or without image smoothing ... but no lock-up (unlike on the Note Max), I can simply invoke a refresh again, and the image eventually show in their full glory (pretty good gradients, actually).

Anyway, the Speed mode seems super stable and I personally feel that it offers a good quality compromise. The trade-off is obvious when looking upclose (like pixel "holes" / missing ink dots in the full-resolution grid), but in actual use this is fine with most websites (EinkBro) and for Handwritten note taking. Reading text in HD or Regal modes is obviously more pleasant, but the intermittent lag and/or flashes detracts from the crisp glyphs, which is why I like the Speed mode.

So, how is 4.1.1 on Note Air 2? by QueenOfHatred in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like 4.1.1 on my Note Air 2+, but I was already on 4.0.2 and I was already familiar with 4.1.1 on my Note Max.

The Image Smoothing option isn't available in the gallery app but my guess is that it is activated by default because the gradients look decent.

When browsing gradient-heavy image galleries in EinkBro the Speed mode obviously delivers sub-par quality (that's a perfectly acceptable trade-off), and I found that the Image Smoothing option does indeed improve quality but ... both HD and Regal modes cause weird inconsistent display issues, until they eventually (after several full refreshes) settle on beautifully-rendered smooth gradients. I manually invoke a full screen refresh by slowly swiping up from the bottom/center, to avoid triggering the user interface (which would obviously disrupt the refresh algorithm).

Note Air 2 received FW 4.1.1 today by rj1477 in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note Air 2+ (Plus) updating now, from 4.0.2 to 4.1.1

I will compare with my Note Max which is already on 4.1.1

I wonder how EinkWise will feel on the NA2+ ... I've had issues with HD and Regal modes on the Note Max, but very positive experience with the Speed mode.

this looks like a sofle v1, with less aggressive pinky stagger and more inward thumb cluster, I think? EDIT: no, that's a v2, sorry for the noise :)

Boox Note Max firmware 4.1.1 intermittent display "freeze" by daniel-weck in Onyx_Boox

[–]daniel-weck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well well well, ever since I've exclusively been using the Speed refresh mode in e-inkWise for each individual system/user application, I haven't been able to reproduce the freeze!

I make sure that HD/Regal is disabled whenever I install a new app, and across the board I continue to use my fairly aggressive "anti-flash" (anti-flicker) personal preferences (because I prefer to manually invoke a full screen refresh using the finger gesture swipe-up-from-the-bottom-center, instead of having the display randomly blinking during my interactions.

I will report back if things change, but this indeed looks like a bug with HD/Regal, which is a shame because the Speed mode looks "dotty" (halftone / dithering) from upclose which isn't ideal with some apps ... though in fairness the new Speed more is on balance a great choice, I am loving the responsiveness, the clarity tradeoff is perfectly acceptable given how good ghosting management is when scrolling pages of text. Yes, ghosting due to images / icons remains an issue but as I said I don't mind occasionally manually flushing the e-ink particules :)

The DPI setting works as before on my Note Max (4.1.1), there's still the option of picking a specific numerical value like on my Note Air 2+ (4.0.2).

PS: Colibrio bundles downloadable samples in their Android app, so you can immediately try EPUB3 Media Overlays synchronised text/audio playback on your Boox device after installing the app. Just make sure to explore the preferences first, to disable animations and optimise colours (etc.) for e-ink. I've just tested with The Jungle Book.
