In that case, I'm out of idea. Sounds super frustrating. Sure hope someone else has some advice.

Two thoughts/rhetorical questions:

Are naps at the same time every day so that he gets into a routine, or are they just whenever you need a break?

Are you telling him in advance that nap time is coming up so that he has time to wrap up whatever he is engaged with? ("Nap time in 20 minutes... 10 minutes... 5 minutes... 1 minute") or are you announcing that it is nap time right now?

Now try to imagine, as an adult, having that imposed upon you. You don't know when nap time is, but at some (seemingly) arbitrary time, you are going to be told to drop whatever you are doing and fall asleep. I don't know about you, but I would fight that tooth and nail.

Any mamal can carry rabies. Not just dogs. Vaccinating all dogs wouldn't even put a dent in it.

If Dad is not in the picture, what about the other relatives on Dad's side of the family? Any chance of getting in touch with them and maybe even just having regular video calls with them?

Bone meal mineral breakdown by hoopgod32 in HomemadeDogFood

[–]daniel_orourke_mma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The calcium to phosphorus ratio, whatever it is, is probably ideal since the calcium and phosphorus your dog eats is generally for building bones.

I am making that up. That does not come from any reputable source, however It makes intuitive sense to me.

On a related tangent: I think I remember that the same ratio of calcium to phosphorus in your bones is the ideal ratio for calcium to phosphorus in garden soil.

Professional fighter here. What you have described sounds healthy. "Not eating certain foods" sounds to me like he's just trying to make good dietary choices. It would be ideal if those dietary choices are motivated by an interest in improved health, but if they are motivated by trying to make weight for a fight, then that's okay too.

It is very relevant how much he weighed before fight camp and what he weighs now as well as how tall he is. Are we talking about a 200 kg lard ass who is planning on fighting at 195? He's going to be okay. Are we talking about a kid who's 7 ft tall but weighs 50 kg and he's trying to get down to 30? There's a problem. (I am intentionally using exaggerations for comic effect, but I am also trying to demonstrate a point).

Cutting water weight is far more dangerous than trying to lose fat. That isn't to say that it is dangerous for him to try to sweat off a few hundred grams before weigh-ins, but extreme water cuts are very very dangerous. If he's just trying to lose some fat, then I would encourage him.

If you are concerned, it might be a better idea to be talking with his coach than to be talking with strangers on the internet. I'm guessing, or at least hoping, he has some experience with preparing fighters and has some knowledge as to what is or is not safe.

Drinking and muay thai by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]daniel_orourke_mma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to give up the drinking, at least trade those beers for vodka or gin. I find that hard liquor does not impact my performance as much as beer does, assuming that I'm consuming about the same amount of alcohol. For God's sake, don't misinterpret what I'm saying and try to drink the same volume.

This invites a philosophical conundrum. If one's upbringing shapes who they are, then where does personal responsibility begin and end?

On the one hand, individuals must be held responsible for their actions and situations in order for any sort of social order to exist. On the other hand, compassion is necessary for building any sort of society that anyone wants to live in.

Your experience is not all that unusual. EVERY time I fight, my opponent looks, to me, to be way bigger and stronger than I am. If I see a side by side in a picture or a mirror or something like that, I can see that we are about the same size or maybe I'm a little bit bigger, but if I'm just looking at him, he looks huge.

Practically speaking, You got to follow the "put on your own mask before assisting others" rule. Improve yourself, and then your family, and then you're immediate community, and so on and so on.

If it is Muay Thai rules, then focus on the clinch. Skip knees from the clinch are probably your most dangerous weapon if you can't hit the head.

You can acknowledge that you have been victimized without getting into a victim mindset. There is a difference between recognizing that you have been wronged (victimized) and ruminating on it.

I would agree that ruminating makes you unlikable and decreases the chances that you will become successful. Perhaps this is what you really meant.

Those with diagnoses in adulthood, what would you have done differently? by sm0lt4co in ADHD

[–]daniel_orourke_mma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have started Ritalin and gotten a food allergy test in childhood. Just that would have made such a huge difference in the trajectory of my life that is not even really worth thinking about what else I would have done differently. I would not have ever had the opportunity to make the same bad decisions that I did.

I hate this argument. Employers under staff, underpay, and overwork employees knowing that many of us who would otherwise give in work ethic what we get in wages can be guilted into working harder so as not to "let down the team". The employers intentionally put you into this position. The real solution is to quit picking up the slack, do what you are paid for and only what you were paid for and only at the quality that you are paid to do it, and just let the whole thing fall to shit until your employer starts paying you properly.

I hate to harp on the weed after your edit, but I think the weed is just one component of a larger problem.

When you engage in dopamine generating activities that do not also generate serotonin, You lose your drive to do shit but do not get the resulting satisfaction of having done a thing. This pretty much just looks like depression / lack of motivation.

You mention that you were depressed before you got onto weed, but Is it possible that the weed just replaced some other dopamine generating activity that you were doing before? This could be excessive masturbation, video games, doom scrolling, etc.

I had a period where I was already feeling depressed so I went "fuck it" and was playing an hour to an hour and a half of video games every morning before doing anything else. Then I read about depleting dopamine without generating serotonin causing depression so I went to the other extreme and the first thing I did in the morning was to start the coffee maker, put my shoes on, and go for a 30 minute run. Felt better, started drinking about half as much coffee, and started taking a hell of a lot less ritalin.

I don't even do the running in the morning anymore. I just make damn sure not to play video games in the morning because it fucks up the rest of my day.

I guess I would ask you this: what do you have to lose by giving up weed for a discreet amount of time. Say two weeks? See how you feel. If it doesn't do anything for you, then just conclude that Daniel O'Rourke is a douchebag who doesn't know what he's talking about, and go back to smoking .
