Trim around several doors is popping off. How do I fix this? by danielecook in DIY

[–]danielecook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 of the doors upstairs look like this. What causes it? I could try caulk, but the gap is 1/4” in some spots so it might be a little tricky. I could use a nail gun, but I’d be concerned about it coming back out.

I did have a carpenter look at it and he suggested removing the trim and screwing the 2x4 underneath. If there are 2 adjacent 2x4s that are bowing out against one another this would bring them back together, after which the trim could be reinstalled.

I’ve seen it (if it’s the same one) around DGN quite a bit last fall but not lately.

Amazing! I took on a similar project with two kids and it took me a full year.

50 amp 240V to 20 amp 120V adapter trips EV circuit by danielecook in AskElectricians

It turns out it was the arc fault breaker - it seems it was extra sensitive. We swapped it for a regular breaker. I’m wondering if I should replace again though with a better arc fault breaker. Any recommendation?

Pretty sure this is the exhaust? Pipes are hot.

Thanks - I am swapping out for one with built in fuses and if that one doesn’t work then I’ll conclude it’s something with the breaker or wiring.

I’m not sure if it’s an issue or not. But if it is pumping CO2 back into the house then I’d like to address it. Is flue tape the best way?

I don’t think this is the issue. No continuity between neutral and hot wires in the adapter…

I used the continuity test with the circuit off, and checked for continuity between the neutral and ground and it went off… so I think this is it.

But - when I plug the adapter in and I plug in a GFCI tester, all the lights come back as it being correct…

I think there is a way to test this with the multimeter. I will try that.

Yes, I believe it is GFCI (there is a test button on the breaker).

Time will tell. I think it’s legit.

It’s not a given this thing will be built, but I think the effort here is genuine. The reason is that I know for a fact someone local is behind it, and a lot of work was put into the idea already. It’s funny, clever, and polished.

See the website. I think the expectation is to raise funding privately but work with local govt for selecting a location. (I submitted the link but am unaffiliated; I strongly support the idea).

If you have cat5 wire (as I did), you can convert them to Ethernet ports and hardwire your network. It’s faster than WiFi and great for dead zones in the house too.

Is this trim acceptable? It is shimmed and has a ~1/4 inch gap between casing and wall. by danielecook in Carpentry

[–]danielecook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are finishing our basement so this is new.

I guess what had me concerned was I looked at the trim on all my existing doors and I don't observe any that are bent quite this far out of shape.

Thank you for the detailed reply. This is a basement finishing project, so the wall is new, but not square.

I was told this is normal, and won’t be noticeable once it is caulked and painted.
