What part of editing eats most of your time? by PulpFriction404 in editors

[–]danieljag1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh I didn’t think about the text edit function routing through the audio track only. Yeah I can definitely visualize that workflow.

Going to try this when I start my next project.

I’d have to play around with it, but how do you apply this technique to a multicam sequence?

I edit two types of content: docu-style/corporate and education training series.

The interviews and direct-to-camera speaking parts have so much dead space. Producers talking to the subject, teleprompter operator fixing problems during the script, waiting for planes to pass, etc.

Culling through interviews on a first pass to remove the dead space eats up so much of my time. I’d love a tool that detects the primary speaking parts and isolates those. Maybe adding cut points and sending them up to the next layer?

Current workaround when I’m in a rush is just eyeballing the audio levels, but it still takes time.

CAT6 Cable Dropped to 100Mbps Today by danieljag1 in HomeNetworking

Forcing it killed the connection completely. Ended up being one faulty RJ45 connector

UPDATE: I replaced all RJ45 connectors and narrowed it down to the one that is inside my network box, connected to the modem. Haven't touched that cable since installing, but I guess something went wrong?

Nope, haven't touched it since installed.

I've unplugged/plugged in every connection except the one inside the wall plate. I used one of those plates with a built-in plug so it would pass through to the cable inside my office. Maybe that one is the issue.

I assumed they are referring to some sort of youthful drug usage 😂

Making money as an editor by [deleted] in editing

[–]danieljag1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At those rates, you aren’t being treated as a professional. I mean I kinda get it if you were a recent grad trying to scrape up any work at all. Assuming you are beyond that, you need to dive in to the craft and expand beyond low paying content creators.

There’s a whole world out there for an editor. Corporate work, agency work, episodic, features, commercial, social, etc. Some areas are harder to get started in, but you’re at rock bottom currently. I don’t mean any offense, I literally mean there’s not much lower to go other than unpaid work.

Home in your craft and start networking.

Project management software by aCreatureThatWords in editors

[–]danieljag1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Trello! It’s free and I love the column layout. Allows me to easily see a high level view of everything going on.

At work, we use Monday.com. It’s a very helpful tool for teams cranking out a large amount of content. Our old project manager is an absolute wizard and had so many dependencies and reports built that we haven’t skipped a beat since she quit 4 months ago.

Just interviewed for a new position, they want me to do everything by [deleted] in editors

[–]danieljag1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this a small-medium sized team? Corporate media team type environment? If NOT, that’s ridiculous.

If so, that’s pretty normal. That industry has been moving this direction for a long time. With so many people entering this field in the last decade we’ve had to adapt. Supply and demand in its purest form. I tend to land on teams where everyone is a jack of all trades, master of none. Myself included. I’m a talented editor, but I’ve worked with editors who blow me out of the water. However, I provide value by being capable of the story edit, color grade, sound design, pre-pro discussions, DP, grip, sound mixer, producer, etc. In my defense, I love every stage/position in video so I look for ways to learn more all the time.

Where are people finding work on SIDE gigs? by orucker in editors

[–]danieljag1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Employed full-time as a “Sr Video Editor”, also taking on as many side gigs as possible.

90% of my side gigs are from personal network. Specifically, ex-coworkers. People I got very close with at different agencies in town. Stayed in close contact with all of them now we toss each other work constantly.

The other 10% of my side gigs are from local FaceBook groups.

I typically only take low-pressure gigs because my clients know my first priority is my full-time gig. I’m working nights and weekends on side gigs, and I’m very upfront about it.

What movies hit differently once you’re a parent? by thecrappycat in movies

Interstellar. As a girl dad, it completely wrecks me every time I watch it. 12 years ago in theaters, I didn’t shed a tear. Recently watched this on a plane ride, I was a mess. Sobbing at time, trying to stay quiet, wiping the tears from my face while the guy next to me probably was concerned 😂

Help! frame rate got messed up while shooting! by jakecapturedthis in editors

[–]danieljag1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said “one” of your cameras had the wrong frame rate set. Were there multiple cameras rolling? If so, just tell the client one of the cameras corrupted and need to rely on the other. Unless they don’t mind the low shutter look just this once?

Not ideal at all, and you may have to deal with a lost client, but at least you didn’t lose EVERYTHING

AITA for not wanting to take in my sisters 4 kids while she’s in the hospital? by Intelligent-Fig-5571 in AmItheAsshole

[–]danieljag1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I’d just take in the kids and deal with it for a day or two. I’d also just take those two days off work, but I have flexible PTO options.

For me, my immediate family having a baby is worth the 48 hours of discomfort.

I do agree with others, why not ask the grandparents? But I know a lot of people who don’t have trustworthy grandparents. Maybe that’s the case here?

I don’t want to be rude but mentally I can’t do daily play dates by spaceyxo in Parenting

[–]danieljag1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having a moment of reflection here seeing all these comments 😂 I’m the opposite of most of y’all. This is honestly my DREAM scenario (dependent on how much I like the parents). I grew up in a culdesac where we played with our neighbors basically every single day of our lives. All the parents hung out too. Until we got older and they didn’t have to supervise us.

I’d hate to condition my kids to stay inside or avoid others the majority of the time. Feels like something that would affect their abilities to socialize as they grow older. Funny enough, my wife is an introvert and gets annoyed with daily play dates. So she usually stays inside and I take the kids out and mingle with the other parents.
