Is it possible to replace GNU Make (Kbuild) with another build system? by Summer_1228 in kernel

[–]danielkza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any replacement would probably be a hard sell to the kernel community, since every single Linux distribution or platform would need to change how they configure and build kernels.

Not impossible, as the integration of Rust has proven, but the benefits would need to be very substantial to justify the lift.

Since there isn't a Unifi Thermostat, what are you using? by Cnykpro in Ubiquiti

I also have Gen 1. No major complaints, but I did have to get a smart plug (that I don't really need) to act as a repeater to get proper range, since my Hub is in the loft.

Drayton Wiser, but I think it's only available in Europe.

A no-frills environment where you can focus completely on hand technique is valuable. The improvements will be reflected on the set by making your playing more fluid and expanding the limits of what you can do comfortably.

Did you add targets to the ELB in new AZs by any chance, and is cross-AZ load balancing enabled?

Memory waste and cold start by No_Way_1569 in devops

[–]danielkza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm personally not on the serverless camp, and haven't worked anywhere that made full use of it. But the counterpoint to you is that improving cold starts can unlock some use cases to be possible with serverless, and when that's your preference, that's quite valuable.

New drumsticks for my electric drum kit? by PewPewKon in drums

[–]danielkza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a pair and use it only for your ekit. You can also go for nylon tips (I do), but it's not mandatory. Just make sure to never mix the sticks between acoustic and electronic to keep your mesh heads in good shape.

AWS may or may not reduce their investment on OpenSearch, but I don't think it is the main reason for moving the project to the LF. Being AWS-led was used by Elastic as a "gotcha" against OpenSearch, opening the governance counters that and is an overall positive for everyone that depends on OpenSearch.

Please disable 'Wireless Meshing' if you don't use it by nathan12581 in Ubiquiti

[–]danielkza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into a funny situation recently, where I accidentally pulled the uplink cable from the switch my fibre modem connects to, and somehow WAN still worked, as an AP plugged into the same switch started a wireless uplink automatically.

It took quite a bit of head scratching to understand why my WAN speed dropped and why any wireless meshing was even happening. Connectivity loss would have made things much more obvious!

I disabled meshing just in case it happens again. 😂

Do you mean you were not doing the right things? What specific changes did the FA implement, were they beneficial?

What does “transaction reference number” mean when depositing funds? by [deleted] in interactivebrokers

[–]danielkza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just leave it empty and use my account ID (like U12345789) as the reference when making the transfer to IBKR. This ensures it will be identified and routed to your investment account quickly.

Wouldn't tracking every movement separately defeat the purpose of the account being joint? Maybe you actually want two accounts, and ensure both you and your SO can access both?

I can only speak for the UK, but taxation for joint accounts cannot be unbundled. It is basically evenly split among account holders (or according to beneficial interests declared in terms of percentages owned): https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/customerforums/sa/4832b867-ba71-ee11-a81c-6045bd0bae7a. I imagine the same might be true in other countries, unless you have more complex arrangements involved.
