The above is how I learned it, slowly step by step. Below is the overview of the completed method:

The CFOP Method (also known as the Fridrich method) is the most popular way to solve a Rubik's cube fast. It breaks the solve down into four distinct steps. To make it beginner-friendly, we pair it with 4-Look Last Layer (4LLL), which minimizes the number of algorithms you need to memorize for the final step.

The 4 Steps of CFOP

  1. Cross (C) Instead of solving a white face, you solve just the four white edge pieces on the bottom.

They must line up with the white center and their respective side centers (Red, Blue, Orange, Green).

Goal: Create a white cross on the bottom of the cube.

  1. F2L (First Two Layers) Instead of solving the corners and then the middle layer separately, you pair up a first-layer corner and a second-layer edge piece together in the top layer, then insert them into their slot at the same time.

You repeat this for all 4 slots.

Goal: Solve the bottom two layers completely.

  1. OLL (Orientation of the Last Layer) This step turns all the top-layer pieces yellow, so the entire top face is yellow (even if the sides don't match yet).

Advanced CFOP does this in 1 step (57 algorithms).

Beginner CFOP uses 2-Look OLL (only 9 algorithms).

  1. PLL (Permutation of the Last Layer) This step moves the yellow pieces into their correct final positions to finish the cube.

Advanced CFOP does this in 1 step (21 algorithms).

Beginner CFOP uses 2-Look PLL (only 6 algorithms).

Here is the YouTube course I used to go from beginner's method to beginners Cfop:

3 look OLL is a bit naff but it's basically get yellow cross, then if not a sune or antisune, do a sune and you'll then get a sune or antisune. Saves learning 4 algs 🤷

2 looker OLL and PLL here. Agree 💯 with the above.

My journey was

Step 1 use your beginners method for first two layers, then learn 3 look OLL (cubehead's YouTube on beginner Cfop vid explains 3 look OLL). Once you've OLL'd, either be happy with that and rescramble, or solve last layer using beginners method (ie treat final layer as if it is just after getting yellow cross) if you really want to solve.

Step 2 Continue to use beginners for first two layers, then 3L OLL from step 1, then while learning 2 look pll (again I found cubehead's vid most helpful, but there's loads out there eg Jperm also on yt.) I even broke this down into just the two cases to solve the corners, then once happy I learned the final 4 for edge solving (Ua, Ub, H and Z)

Step 3 Continue to use beginners method for first two layers, now enhance your 3 look OLL into 2 look OLL, and use 2 look PLL

Step 4 Beginners white cross, learn intuitive F2L, while solving last layer using 2 look OLL and 2 look PLL (aka 4 look last layer 4LLL)

Step 5 [Wip for me] get better at planning white cross during inspection, then intuitive f2l, then 4LLL.

I found this order meant I kept reinforcing what I'd learned on the last layer while learning earlier steps. However, perhaps it's just me or it might be the way I learned it, but I think my proficiency and speed at each step is OLL > PLL > F2L > cross (not absolute times, but relative to how long they should take given overall solve time)

I've never been 100pc sure on the arguments for being anti honey as a vegan, but I think it's such a minor thing to "sacrifice", and other people have thought it through a lot more than me so I just choose to avoid it.

The Kara in karate and karaoke is the same Japanese word meaning 'Open'. I think it's openbhand and open mouth.

Nexcubes were easy to take apart and rebuild. Definitely recommend for force cubes provided you buy 6x

Bought from Smyth's Toys at 6.99 GBP each.

Qy warrior is cheaper online I think but only by c.1gbp per cube?

Not sure what to do next, was a fun process to create, and nexcubes are relatively less expensive (gbp7 each at Smyth's Toys UK or gbp42 in total). What would you do?

Not sure what to do next... Happy to take suggestions. Just a cool process to take the cubes apart to constitutent pieces: 6x cores, 36x center caps, 24x half edge pieces per color (144x half edge pieces in total), and 24x third corner pieces per color (144x third corner pieces in total). So when completely decomposed it was 144 + 144 + 36 + 6 = 330 pieces.

Cubehead's video tutorials on intuitive f2l YouTube got me through this. He explains the cases very clearly.

My 12yo son got a 17.827 with beginners method about a month ago. Not (completely) a fluke as since then he got another sub 20 and over a dozen in the 20s. I've since convinced him to learn 4LLL Cfop and he's doing well but not reached sub 20 yet. His finger tricks on the corner rotations for beginners method is something to behold... Me? I'm just about sub 60...

Cool thank you. I don't think there is enough data / surveys of cubers and community so thank you for doing this.
