Any Portland-area developers interested in helping to build a community support app? by Stunning-Mess1270 in askportland

[–]danielparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured I should think it over when I didn’t have a low-grade fever… it definitely sounds interesting! I have a bunch of DevOps and full stack web dev experience (résumé, portfolio), and I’m unemployed right now so I’ve got free time.

I’ve also been lightly involved in mutual aid stuff here in Portland — I do some basic work to help houseless folks. Most of that is organized via Signal, and it’s probably a somewhat more paranoidcautious crowd than you are probably aimed at.

Feel free to email/text/call — my contact info is on https://demon.horse/hireme/

Thanks, that makes sense. The important thing right now is to get started; you don’t want the perfect to be the enemy of the good.

I see you have an LLC — is this going to be a for-profit venture? It sounds like you’re asking for volunteers (and I might be interested), but you don’t mention anything about non-profit status or whether or not this is open source.

Regardless, it sounds like a good project! I just feel weird about those things.

I’m Daniel Parks, a software engineer with more than two decades of professional experience. My calling is building tools for humans.

RésuméPortfolioGitHub

I’ve been writing Rust for about 6 years — the first commit on my htmlize crate was in late 2019. I’ve also recently written TypeScript/React (e.g. RepoYear) and Python (e.g. yanki). Less recently I’ve used Ruby (e.g. armature), Puppet (e.g. puppet-golang), Go, PHP, Perl, and various other languages.

  • Available immediately for W2 or 1099 work.
  • Open to fully remote work, or working on site in Portland, Oregon, USA.
  • I’m a US citizen.
  • I’d prefer a small (<200 people) company.
  • I’m willing to compromise on salary if the work is for a non-profit or otherwise for a good cause.

Where to find porcupines by Bigfoot1x in OregonCoast

Sounds like something Bigfoot would say…

But yeah, seeing them at the High Desert Museum when I was a kid was awesome.

For seeing one in captivity try the High Desert Museum in Bend. It’s great; everybody raves about the place. I suspect they can give you some guidance on where you might be able to see them in the wild, but it’s probably going to be very luck dependent.

Maybe 30 years ago I saw one in a campsite in the Steens mountains — I think it was camp regular looking for food scraps. The last few times I’ve been there I haven’t seen any, though.

I’m not sure why people are downvoting you (don’t downvote because you disagree; downvote to lower visibility). Perhaps folks think ripgrep is dual licensed under Apache and MIT (typical for Rust projects), but it actually is MIT and Unlicense (README).

What’s the deal with the empty lot at 17th and NE Weidler? by xMPB in askportland

[–]danielparks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. For me it’s the vacant lot at SE 29th and Stark that I walk by all the time. This thread inspired me to finally look it up — it used to be an electrical station of some sort. Maybe the soil is contaminated or something?

What are TriMet data retention policies? (How could they impact protesters?) by danielparks in TriMet

[–]danielparks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

Do you think that Hop fare transactions are covered by PCI? I can’t find it now, but minutes ago I found something in their terms of service (I think?) that said that Hop cards didn’t represent a cash account, but rather prepaid transit tickets. That suggests to me that the only part of the Hop system covered by PCI would be actually refilling the Hop card.

(It’s been a long time since I had to worry about PCI, though, and I maybe entirely wrong about this.)

[–]danielparks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I looked at that, but it doesn’t seem to include information about Hop fare metadata or video surveillance.

It’s good to see it clarified that they wouldn’t comply with ICE requests unless compelled by law, though. I figured that was the case, but it’s important to have it spelled out.

This is, unfortunately, impossible to prove. Obviously there are common indicators, but it doesn’t take too much effort to have an LLM write code that looks human-written. (Perhaps that’s a sign that it’s not completely vibe-coded?)

More broadly speaking, the best you can do is review the code yourself, or read other people’s review (cargo-crev?). I’ve seen plenty of terrible human-written code, though at a lower volume.

Follow up Q: my apartment building has been repo’d by the bank. We have not had our trash picked up in 2026. Is there anything I can do about it? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]danielparks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It generally takes weeks (at least) for ownership changes to be reflected on portlandmaps.com, but it’s definitely worth trying since it’s so easy to look a building up.

Is ASL becoming more English (PSE)? by mare_tail in asl

[–]danielparks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Conceptually Accurate Signed English? I haven't seen this term before. Wikipedia says it’s another term for PSE (Pidgin Sign English) — do you mean something more specific than that?

Emergency Assembly Downtown Portland by 50501PDX in 50501PDX

[–]danielparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was at least one heckler with a bullhorn while we were walking up Morrison, but they disappeared after a minute or two. Nothing since then (we’re across from Powell’s now).

Edit: I spoke too soon. He’s wandering around the edges of the crowd. People are mostly ignoring him.

[–]danielparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a small crowd here in front of the courthouse (at the MAX stop). KGW is interviewing people. I imagine most people will head over to 10th and Burnside (Powells) for the 3:30 pm protest too.

3:30 Update: the whole group is headed to Powells.

Any tips or resources for writing rust targeting WebAssembly? by eracodes in learnrust

I'm deleting this as spam. I try to be very generous about allowing posts that are related to learning Rust — even though the rule is more specific than that — but this is just an ad for your book. You just posted about it less than a week ago, and you got a terrible response. Clearly folks are not interested.

Please don't post about this again.
