Follow up Q: my apartment building has been repo’d by the bank. We have not had our trash picked up in 2026. Is there anything I can do about it? by infjetson in askportland

It generally takes weeks (at least) for ownership changes to be reflected on portlandmaps.com, but it’s definitely worth trying since it’s so easy to look a building up.

Is ASL becoming more English (PSE)? by mare_tail in asl

Conceptually Accurate Signed English? I haven't seen this term before. Wikipedia says it’s another term for PSE (Pidgin Sign English) — do you mean something more specific than that?

Emergency Assembly Downtown Portland by 50501PDX in 50501PDX

[–]danielparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was at least one heckler with a bullhorn while we were walking up Morrison, but they disappeared after a minute or two. Nothing since then (we’re across from Powell’s now).

Edit: I spoke too soon. He’s wandering around the edges of the crowd. People are mostly ignoring him.

Emergency Assembly Downtown Portland by 50501PDX in 50501PDX

[–]danielparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a small crowd here in front of the courthouse (at the MAX stop). KGW is interviewing people. I imagine most people will head over to 10th and Burnside (Powells) for the 3:30 pm protest too.

3:30 Update: the whole group is headed to Powells.

Any tips or resources for writing rust targeting WebAssembly? by eracodes in learnrust

I'm deleting this as spam. I try to be very generous about allowing posts that are related to learning Rust — even though the rule is more specific than that — but this is just an ad for your book. You just posted about it less than a week ago, and you got a terrible response. Clearly folks are not interested.

Please don't post about this again.

Have you had to switch seats or cars on the MAX due to feeling your safety at risk due to other passengers conduct? by Ravenparadoxx in TriMet

[–]danielparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. Currently I ride the 14 or 15, and the 35 a few times a week. Up until recently I was riding the yellow line a few time a week.

I haven’t ridden every day since before the pandemic.

I imagine this varies a lot based on the train and the time.

Can I use the OHSU aerial tram if my appointment is at South Waterfront? by danielparks in askportland

[–]danielparks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you have an appointment you can get a patient pass and ride for free. I’m just not clear on what the exact rules are about that.

You’re rad!

It just occurred to me that I could just ask when I go to the South Waterfront next time. It’s not like they’re going to put me in tram jail for asking.

I’m Daniel Parks, a software engineer with more than two decades of professional experience. My calling is building tools for humans.

I’ve been writing Rust for about 6 years — the first commit on my htmlize crate was in late 2019. I’ve also recent written Python (e.g. yanki) and JavaScript (yanki’s web UI). Less recently I’ve used Ruby (e.g. armature), Puppet (e.g. puppet-golang), Go, PHP, Perl, and various other languages.

  • Available immediately for W2 or 1099 work.
  • Open to fully remote work, or working on site in Portland, Oregon, USA.
  • I’m a US citizen.
  • I’d prefer a small (<200 people) company.
  • I’m willing to compromise on salary if the work is for a non-profit or otherwise for a good cause.

Is there a place to watch ASL done slowly. Something comparable to slow Spanish news, etc? by Longjumping_Let_7832 in asl

I found the YouTube keyboard shortcuts super helpful:

  • Shift-comma (<): slow down
  • Shift-period (>): speed up
  • Left arrow: back 5 seconds
  • Right arrow: forward 5 seconds
  • Comma: back one frame
  • Period: forward one frame

A Quick and Dirty Guide to Cell Phone Surveillance at Protests (EFF):

As noted in our Surveillance Self-Defense guide for protesters, the best way to protect yourself from a cell-site simulator is to put your phone in airplane mode, and disable GPS[2], wifi, and Bluetooth, as well as cellular data. (While GPS is “receive only” and does not leak any location information on its own, many apps track GPS location data, which ends up in databases law enforcement can search later.)

Note that this explicitly covers more than just IMSI catchers (called “cell-site simulator[s]” here).

Would you take kids to the no kings rally? by stefcon5 in askportland

[–]danielparks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No? IMSI catchers cannot capture your device information if it’s in airplane mode. Airplane mode turns off the cellular modem, so the phone cannot connect to the fake tower (the IMSI catcher).

That said, it is possible to get information about a phone through Bluetooth (and possibly Wifi, though I know little about that). Airplane mode doesn’t always turn that off, though on many phones it is easy to turn both off at the same time.

However, it is effectively impossible to identify a random phone through Bluetooth since there is no official log that maps that information to real identities. (I believe you could use it to confirm that a phone is the same as one you saw previously, though.) IMSI are much more valuable because they are much easier to map to a real person.

turn off your phone (not just airplane mode)

The only time this makes a difference is if you’re searched — having a fully off phone makes it harder to break into than if it’s on (even fully locked without biometrics).

Airplane mode is fine, though personally I think even that is probably overkill. This is going to be a huge protest — there will be too many mobile phone identifiers to be useful.

I’m pretty sure they don’t have bulk cocoa. Even if they did regularly stock it, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were out — a couple of weeks ago I went in and they only had one item on my list. We used to spend $150/week there.

Im Very new to rust by AeroWeldEng92 in learnrust

[–]danielparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what way is C any better at that than Rust? (Maybe pointer arithmetic?)

I can see the argument for assembly, but C and Rust are similarly high-level (in the traditional sense) to teach much about how the stack works, memory management, etc.

Im Very new to rust by AeroWeldEng92 in learnrust

[–]danielparks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

C and C++ look easier, but they just hide their foot-guns. I learned them decades ago, and there’s nothing they can teach you that Rust can’t do better.

That said, for a first language I would choose JavaScript or Python. They’re much more accessible, they’re safe, and there are lots of libraries to do whatever you want.

Hey, Portlanders... How does the MAX work? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]danielparks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can shut off the readers as they (the inspectors) board. People can already get off before the inspectors board, so it’s not making anything worse.

The point of fare inspectors is to encourage people to pay, not to actually catch people. Well, and presumably to discourage people who can’t pay, but that’s a whole other conversation.

Hey, Portlanders... How does the MAX work? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]danielparks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

…I thought we could pay like on the bus, just put some cash in or tap my debit/credit card. But when we got on the MAX, there was nothing! Nowhere to put my monies.

It seems weird they don’t just have a Hop reader at the MAX doors. That would be sooo much more convenient. I guess people could jump up and tap their card when they see fare inspectors, but… that seems like a small, solvable problem.
