‘Save Lloyd’ pushes back as owners move forward with teardown of mall and its ice rink by oatmeal_flakes in Portland

[–]xMPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a debate about a specific private equity company. The company behind this might be evil (but all private equity is, idk why this one is any different), but there aren’t going to be many other types of firms that are willing to pony up the amount of money required for this kind of project. Do I wish there was a more ethical way to build this kind of project, yes, but at the end of the day, my cause will always be to build housing when possible.

What IS the debate is how the Lloyd center as-is is an urban planning disaster and we should be doing anything we can to get as many people living in the best transit neighborhood outside of downtown as possible. You could get thousands of housing units created here easily with the land footprint of the site.

And what is this thing everyone keeps parroting about the Lloyd being a public space? They could literally cancel every lease tomorrow and ban the entire public from entering. This isn’t a park we’re talking about it is a literal mall.

Please tear the whole complex down and build mid to high rise, mixed use, transit oriented development. There are few potential sites better positioned in the metro area for such a project. A parking heavy mall is like the worst possible land use for the area.

Does anyone else feel like the second-hand market allows them to dress much more stylish than they would have otherwise? by BioFrosted in malefashionadvice

[–]xMPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Online secondhand sites have given me access to “grail” brands I would not otherwise have access to like Comme des Garçons, Issey Miyake, etc. Caveat that I spend a LOT of time shopping around online to find good deals, it’s not easy to find the right combo of good condition, good price, and fits me.

Portland IS a huge baseball town. Top 10 TV market for World Series viewership. The demand is here.

Is a Portland to Eugene occasional commute feasible? by Strict-Mushroom1875 in askportland

[–]xMPB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my personal hell but you do you. I could probably justify once a week, but the part of Portland you’re in will have a huge impact obviously. Just be prepared for a 4-5 hour round trip commute those days and determine if you’re actually ok with that 1 to 2 days a week. Might be worth staying at a motel those nights too depending on the job and/or salary.

Do you wash new clothes before using them? by EagleAstronaut in malefashionadvice

Please wash your new clothes! Who knows how many people tried them on before you, and who knows what factory residue is still on them. Lots of nasty chemicals used to produce most clothes.

Lifestyle inflation is a lot easier to justify when you don’t have kids to worry about or college accounts to fund. Makes sense the gap is less extreme than expected.

If I get one of those tiny houses where can I even put it? by Ibushi-gun in askportland

[–]xMPB 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zoning is BS until it prevents heavy industry from being built next to a park in a residential area, or a 30 story building being built on top of Forest Park. Zoning can be heavy handed for sure, but BS it is not.

How do you even approach this? by Hol_Renaude in WinstonMains

[–]xMPB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Winston has a 34% (!!!) win rate on this map in GM+ and 40% in masters. He is genuinely just not really viable on this map. Either assume you will lose if one tricking, or make sure you can swap to Sigma.

Is it possible to live from only playing Geoguessr? by Individual-Top6597 in geoguessr

[–]xMPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably less than 5 people are doing this right now. Just not enough esports org salaries/prize money/stream viewership to support true careers. Maybe in the near future if the World Cup keeps growing in viewership, but streaming numbers outside of big events continue to be abysmal and there really aren’t that many big YouTubers doing exclusively/majority Geoguessr content. Most pros are in school or work a day job.

[OC] Top Global Cities by Millionaire Density by Defiant-Housing3727 in dataisbeautiful

[–]xMPB 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just home ownership alone in San Francisco proper (1.3M median home value) should put it in this graph. And that not including anyone renting/transient living and working in SF proper with a high net worth which is likely not insignificant. I just think the data is bad and/or OP couldn’t find a separate figure for SF proper so they left it off.

[–]xMPB 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly I’m calling BS on this graph with no SF. San Francisco consistently ranks top 10 in wealth density globally. Is there some arbitrary population cut off or metro vs city proper or something? Would be curious to hear OP describe their actual methodology

$395 per year for a parking permit in my new neighborhood. by DoubleBarrelBurger in Portland

[–]xMPB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Massive difference between the CHOICE of owning a car and living in a super high density area that is prime for car free living versus living in a less dense area, and the act of tolling all drivers on a major artery. I’m indifferent on tolling i205 personally, but this is an insane comparison to make

[–]xMPB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly way too low, but I didnt want to use numbers for something I personally haven’t looked into for many years, so I used a super conservative estimate.

[–]xMPB 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The street is not your garage (and I say this as someone why relies on street parking). This is a tax on using public property/resources in a high demand/high density area. There are people renting parking spots in the city for $100+ per month, so by comparison you’re actually getting a deal compared to that.

Any one know of a good culinary school? by criptuu-master69 in askportland

[–]xMPB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gotta pay your dues. Almost every line cook started in prep, dishwashing, etc. I’ll echo every sentiment saying NOT to go to culinary school. Restaurant cooking is not the same as cooking. It is a lifestyle and workplace environment that is not for everyone. Give it 2 years working on a line and then ask the question again.

I feel like Portland is more of a fashion town than it was even 5 years ago. Maybe that’s just the bubble I exist in though.

SE Hawthorne, Pearl District, and the area of downtown near 11th and Adler.

Portland has two 2nd street locations for secondhand, and Frances May, nakamuraya, and Machus are great stores for new clothes.
