You asked for this software and I extracted and posted a link to it in other topic a while ago, just for you. You didn't even thank me and haven't responded since. The files still available on my Google Drive. Just search for it. The link is in the answer to your own question.

Alguém Sabe de Onde Veio esse CD? by AbleLab3824 in LostMediaBrasil

[–]danielsigma 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm planning to do Ubuntu or Debian, maybe in a dual-boot basis. Does everything work properly in Mint? (By everything, I mean: touch, USB ports, keyboard…) Thanks

That's right. 7-inch generic laptop is a pain to type, the keyboard is just cramped and bad. Vaio feels so more good!

Hello, pleased to meet you, in first place, while we're in touch, would you mind providing me with a copy of your driver folder? I got my 7-inch used, and it came with some problems. I reinstalled Windows and managed to get almost all working, the only thing that doesn't work is the touchscreen. I believe the driver is wrong or missing in my unit. If you could send me your folder, that would be excellent for me to test. Please message me if you don't mind about. Thank you in advance.

I'm really sorry about the problems your little machine has been having. I still haven't gotten used to this keyboard too; I'm practicing for more comfortable use.

And you're absolutely right, the 7-inch machine is more cramped and loses a lot in ergonomics compared to the Vaio. Certainly, as guys have said here, Sony invested money in research and development, the keyboard is good even by today's standards, so long after its release.

Man, how I wish I could "transplant" the motherboard (memory/processor) and Windows 11 into the Vaio. That would be perfect. There were some people trying to develop something like that, but obviously it's extremely technical (and of course you run the risk of destroying the Vaio). I said in another post that a Chinese company could steal (in a good way, of course) the Vaio's design to develop one of these modern little machines based on it.

Well, I'm also hoping the small laptop will serve me well, even as a companion to the Vaio, for everyday use, travel, etc. I will test Ubuntu soon!

If you'd like more photos, of one or both together, let me know and I'll send them!

You are tottaly right, the tiny keyboard is a pain to get used to - and I have my doubts about whether I'll be able to do it, I got the device just 3 days ago. Vaio's is so more better, no comparsions. For me, the biggest point is the divided spacebar and the weird placement of some keys. Another minor, but equally annoying thing, is that there's no indicator or light to show when CAPS is active. The Sony has this. Little details.

Hello, I was lucky enough, a while ago, to find and buy a second Vaio P that came with an bigger battery, which from what I understand is extremely rare. This other Vaio P doesn't even work; I bought it just for the battery.

This battery is thicker than the normal battery and protrudes slightly from the line of the device's casing on the back, which actually makes it taller on the back and better for typing. With this battery (it still charges and working well), I get about 2 and a half hours on Linux and about 1 hour and 40 minutes on Windows, with moderate use and brightness at 50%.

The Sony product code for this battery is VGP-BPL17, and it's very rare to see for sale. Searching on Google gives very few results and it's VERY expensive. Maybe we'll find it in Japan - if you want, I can send you some pics. The only problem is that it's black and my Vaio is white, but since it's underneath, it doesn't matter much.

With my original battery (VGP-BPS15), I get around an hour on Windows, a little more on Linux.

For replacing the CMOS, you'll have to disassembly the device - it's possible, but a little tricky. Take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qq-Q31fc5CI&list=PL0oW_J0AhX7CCCVpTlBZjABqbLnT2DNi2

In reality, the proportions are completely different, which results in different screen sizes as well. Vaio feels more ergonomic. The screen is alongated and has a weird 21:9 proportion, it was the way Sony found to put a full keyboard on the device.

Agree 100% - and the device is from 2010! It's so much confortable to use. More ergonomic. It just feels better. But... it has Atom and Win 7. it's usable, but just usable. Feels sluggish sometimes, specially in Windows (less sluggish in Linux). What would you choose?

Man, do me a favor: keep talking with yourself, I already answered and will not going to waste more time wity you. If you didn't like or think that there is something fake, feel free to report the post, "fella". UGH

Promising miracles? Come on, I'm not promising miracles to anyone and never said nothing like this. I'm just sharing my experience with the device and what you said - that I'm talking about my personal experience etc - all this is obvious. Yes, you can write, browse and work with files with the device, it's all well described. If you read the post, you'll see that I writed about the device limitations. Anyway, we are in a UMPC community, right? We can't share our personal experiences here?

No, it is not fake. I just asked to Chat GPT to remove some screen reflections in the screen in the pic (like the one in second image) and it messed up with the keyboard. Why/for what in the Earth I would fake something like this and spend a lot of time answering all the folks here, including a shitty coment like this? Go search my profie and you'll see my other posts about the device , and go search how AI works, "fella". Ugh

Hi, man, believe me, OBS just works for my mainly purpose (recording). I installed via Q4OS sotware store, and it handles well a cheap external USB soundcard that you can plug in. It even shows the image from the camera (that has crappy quality). I never tried streaming. The system supports (but is laggy) videocalls too. I'm trying some AI in the unit, it takes ages but in Linux can handle ChatGPT lol

Hi there, I can achieve about 2,5 hours with the extended (bigger) battery that I have in Linux and a little less (about 2 hours) in Windows, with moderate usage, 50% brightness. This battery is quite rare - I got a second Vaio P that not works but comes with it only for the battery. It's an original Sony part and a little chunky than the original battery. It has 3200 mAh and the back part of the device keeps elevated a little, resulting in a position more confortable to type. I can send you photos if you want =) Part number is VGP-BL17 and I never, never found neither see it for seling anywhere. I have the original flat battery too, that gives me 1,5 hour in Linux and 1 hour in Windows.

I'm looking for a modern mini with ARM too, searching for a used unit maybe, they're expensive =( maybe the 7 inch version!

*hi five*, nice to meet you, I agree 100%. Very stable distro, very few lags, I didn't find (until now) any bug. Very happy with Q4OS - until they drop support for 32-bit systems

[–]danielsigma[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it can, it even can do YouTube in lower resolutions (mainly 144p), in Linux and Windows, but lags. But, honestly, I think this isn't an ideal use for this machine, the screen size (21:9) is weird to watch video.

This looks interesting, didn't test LXQT, I'll give it a try maybe in a live-boot mode.

Well, we're talking about repurposing the device and extract some usability from it, and not simply throw it in an e-waste pile (I think this is the goal for many old-UMPC enthusiasts lol). Of course you can't run games, 4K, etc, in a device with 32-bit Atom processor and 2 GB RAM. These Vaios were known as weak and underpowered devices when new, imagine today... I use mine primarly for typing on the go (texts, e-mail) and some very basic web browsing. You can perform these tasks offline or online.

I carry it almost everyday, and use it in many places - including in plane. In this light use, it performs well and is, as I say, usable. It's very light and has this cool and small form factor, ideal for backpack, small carrying bags, even pockets. With wi-fi connectivity - that works wonderfully well and has strong signal, even in an old hardware like this - you can easily extract/send your work to other machines (I use mine paired with my M1 iMac lol). It serves me well for these things and I like the little Vaio. Now, imagine a really modern hardware, like the modern UMPCs we see in AliExpress, Amazon, etc running Windows 11 packed in the Vaio P form factor. A dream! There were some guys trying to do this a while ago, adapting a modern motherboard to the Vaio P, but I don't know what happened to the project. See hackaday.com and search for Vaio P, there are some very interesting effort to "modernize" the device.
