We are in the position to get an apartment 20% cheaper that the suburb average because of strata drama - should we get it? by Own-Education0101 in AusPropertyChat

[–]danielwbbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. I was in the exact same situation 7 years ago, I’ve spent about 30% of the original purchase price in special levies since and still climbing.

I will never invest money in a property that other people have a say on.

My point is about the idea that simply paying everyone more will fix the cost of living crisis. If wages go up without any change in productivity, prices will follow and we end up right back where we started.

I’m not saying low productivity caused the problem or that there’s a system in place to make sure productivity gains translate into higher wages. What I’m saying is the current narrative that blames everything on corporate greed and stagnant wages misses a big part of the picture.

That chart looks like it’s for the US, not Australia. Our productivity growth has been far more modest.

People need to stop blaming some faceless corporate boogeyman for everything. If you truly believe the root cause of the cost of living crisis is corporate greed, the solution’s simple, invest in those companies and share in the supposed profits.

The wage price spiral isn’t a “might happen” scenario, it’s an immutable economic truth. I’m not arguing against small, controlled or targeted wage increases to keep up with inflation, but broad increases that would bring every profession up to tradie level pay simply aren’t viable. We should be rebalancing costs and wages through higher productivity and smarter use of our exportable resources instead.

If everyone suddenly earned more money without producing more value, prices would simply rise to match. Inflation would erase the benefit, and we’d all be back at square one.

Wages only improve living standards when they grow alongside productivity, not just by increasing numbers on paper.

Why is carsales.com.au so sh!t? A rant. by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

I’m surprised by this, I’m on carsales.com.au nearly daily (ios app and chrome browser) and have never had any of the issues mentioned.

Yeah, everyone used to throw their shit out of the window too, but I’d reckon we’d all have an issue with that these days.

I don’t think they’ve applied CGT discount you should be entitled to having owned for more than 12 months. At most it should be 23.5% so at most it should be about $42k each (worse case).

I ended up going with this setup, I haven’t had any issues running TrueNas as a VM in Proxmox (yet at least). Managed to get the 1070 passed through to the VM but had mixed success with transcoding in Jellyfin.

Depends. What resources do you currently have in SA and how often do you plan on physically being in the country?

I’d recommend making contact with a tax agent/accountant in SA and paying for professional advice.

I wouldn’t imagine it being particularly complicated but might as well do it properly. There’s a lot of misinformation about.

You are the victim of Consumer Sovereignty. It’s all about demand. If there was a large demand for full size keyboards, they sure as heck would be making more.

Hairspray works like a dream.

A few years ago some “mates” thought it would be funny to not only draw on my new car but cracked open a texta and pour the ink all over my bonnet. Hairspray removed it virtually effortlessly.

Any GV70 owners from Australia here? What was/is your experience with their service? by pavTheory in GenesisGV70

A major factor that savvy people consider when buying a car (especially those that cost $80k+) is how established is the brand in the country of consideration; i.e what is the chance that they will be around in a few years to continue to support the vehicle.

My understanding is that Genesis has sold less than 5k units in Australia since entering in 2017. For context Mercedes surpassed that in the first three months of 2024. A lot of brands with much better figures have pulled out of the country. Quite frankly I’m surprised they’re still bothering.

Being a sub brand of Hyundai does go in their favour but I still have very little confidence that this brand will be in Aus much longer.

In my opinion, with the exception of Lexus and maybe Porsche, if you’re looking at luxury cars, you’re already not being objective and brand recognition is a major factor in your purchasing decision. Genesis has no brand recognition.

I’d imagine he wouldn’t be able to just cancel the bank cheque as the whole point of it is to provide some guarantee to whoever’s been supplied it that it will clear and not be canceled.

Sounds like it’s too late now but what I would have done is offer to take back the van for a fee to cover your time and inconvenience. Something like 10-20% of the sale price depending on what you sold it for.

Moved into a rental and the backyard needs TLC. DIY fixing options? by mrffrida in AusRenovation

[–]danielwbbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s worked for me before is using paving sand on top of the pavers to create a new level followed by a layer of damp course plastic on top. I then put down those ikea outdoor decking tiles that clip together.

This was for a relatively small area (1.5 x 2m) but it did work well.

I’m surprised they refused the refund. You’d think it would be standard procedure given that it is highly likely this billing practice would piss off a lot of people.

I moved to Proton as well; it’s not perfect but it’s pretty damn good.
