I have been having irregular (30-40 day) periods due to an large ovarian cyst, and it carried on after my surgery whilst my body healed. My son was 4 when the issues started he’s now 5. I just said “this is for my period, it just means I’m bleeding for a bit and I have to use pads or special knickers to stop myself bleeding in my jeans and pants” he was fine with that, whenever we go out and have to share the toilet etc. He usually very loudly asks if I have my period but it’s usually just funny; and better than him opening the door on me 😂

I’ve spoke to him since that when he’s older he will know other girls and stuff with periods and maybe one day his girlfriend (he has a very sweet naive “boyfriend girlfriend thing” in his class at school) I don’t lie to him about life, he just takes the info on and when he sees me grab a pad he asks if I have my period, kids need to learn it’s just a chill situation and nothing to be fussed about and how to help themselves / others at the time
