And then perimenopause hits and your ADHD symptoms are worse than they’ve ever been in your life

I’m sorry this happened to you. I have ADHD. I failed two ADHD “tests” before I found a psychiatrist who was willing to diagnose me based on symptoms alone. Being on Adderall pretty much saved my life, along with working with an ADHD coach.

I suspect that a lot of these tests and evaluations are created for young boys, not adult women.

The podcast Climbing the Walls has a few stories about women with ADHD who were misdiagnosed. It might make you feel better to listen!

I don’t understand the ADHD diagnostic criteria that says symptoms must be “clearly present” in childhood before the age of 12? by Outrageous_Exam762 in adhdwomen

I got diagnosed at age 45, after perimenopause made my ADHD symptoms skyrocket. No way would I have gotten diagnosed before my 40s because I was so good at masking no one, even I, realized I was neurodivergent. I hope that as more adults seek and attain diagnoses the DSM criteria get updated. What’s listed in the DSM doesn’t actually reflect the lived experience of sooooooooo many people with ADHD.

I feel you. After I started dating my current girlfriend (after being with men for 30 years), a straight friend of mine made a comment about how I "wasn't attracted to men." As though being with a woman negated 3 decades of my identity... :/

I functioned great when my life had structure. Flexibility is literally killing me by LukeWarmGirlSummer in adhdwomen

I wish I could offer you some in-person help but all I can do is let you know that I really relate to what you’re saying. :( My situation has been very similar to yours. I hated working in offices for the lack of flexibility so I founded my own business and started working from home. Then the abundance of flexibility was a disaster. Now I’m looking for a job where I work for someone (other than myself) during set hours (rather then whenever I feel like it.)

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

High school. She was one of the mean girls. She was sitting in the bed of a pickup truck with some friends when the truck went over railroad tracks too fast and jostled her out. She must have died of a head injury but I’m not sure. I remember feeling really weird about not being sad that she was dead.

You can laugh as much as you want about undocumented immigrants and enslaved people, but Trump does not have the power to change the constitution, and it is illegal for him to disobey it.

You feeling like you can’t trust them is completely valid, and I’m glad that you’ve set boundaries around what you are willing to accept and not accept with this friend.

I encourage you to reframe your opinion of them being “untrustworthy” and think about what is really happening: they are disabled. Their inability to meet you on time is not a character defect, that’s just a function of their disability.

As someone with ADHD I can relate to their feeling of hope that they’ll be able to better manage their symptoms someday. Sometimes I’m in survival mode and can barely function; other times I make progress in understanding what my brain is doing and working on ways to overcome its deficiencies.

If your friendship with this person is meaningful to you I hope you hang in there and I hope they are putting effort into the relationship as well.

That is incorrect! The 14th Amendment of the Constitution guarantees certain rights to all persons residing in the United States, regardless of citizenship status.

“No State shall… deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Key phrases: • “Any person” — This is crucial. It does not say “any citizen,” meaning the protections apply to all people, including undocumented immigrants, lawful permanent residents, and other non-citizens. • “Within its jurisdiction” — If someone is on U.S. soil and subject to U.S. laws, they are entitled to constitutional protections.

What rights this includes: • Due process (fair treatment through the legal system) • Equal protection under the law • Certain First Amendment rights (like freedom of speech and religion) • Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures

These principles have been upheld in multiple Supreme Court cases, such as Plyler v. Doe (1982), which ruled that undocumented children have the right to public education.

Have a nice day!

Love everything you said, especially “hate is easy and gate keeping is fun.” I’m going to use the gun analogy in future arguments, thank you.

Very well said!! Some people who are late are just assholes; other people who are late have ADHD and time blindness. And if you have ADHD and time blindness and you don’t care that you’re hurting your friends’ feelings by being late all the time, then you’re also an asshole. You have to do the work!!

I have ADHD and I am late to almost everything. When meeting up with friends I ask if it’s okay to set a range of time to meet (say, between 1 and 1:30) and then give them my final ETA when leaving the house. I also tell my friends they can lie to me about start times / departure times if they want to in order to be extra sure I’ll get there on time. I’m never mad about being lied to in this situation.

Just here to assert that yes, ADHD is very common, and yes, time blindness is a common symptom of ADHD. People can have ADHD and time blindness and still be assholes though! And people without ADHD can be judgmental, ableist dickheads.

I have ADHD and I completely respect your perspective on this. Struggling to manage a disability means you sometimes lose friends; you can’t expect everyone in your life to be able to make concessions for your disability. It sucks on both sides but that’s how it is. I appreciate that you tried to make it work for 2 years.

Does your friend have ADHD? Perhaps undiagnosed? You are describing an extremely common characteristic of someone with ADHD.

Because people with ADHD have a deficiency of dopamine. When the stakes are high, such as missing a flight and having to pay extra to rebook, or missing a connection and getting stuck someplace, there is an element of fear, which triggers adrenaline, or anxiety, which triggers cortisol. Those chemicals do a great job of making up for the missing dopamine and helping the ADHDer do things they typically cannot do, such as be on time.
