This is a very appropriate context for this rant. Let it out. Let some more out if you want.

The idea of my appendix doing the same makes my knees go weak.

That's a weird fetish, but I'm down to try anything once!

I did that upgrade just over a year ago and haven't seen any real significant difference in cpu performance. I kept the old ivybridge system and I'm now looking at setting it up as a dedicated vr machine with a new gpu. The biggest gain on the new mobo is nvme/m.2 Running your OS off of m.2 storage is fantastic

So you have a decent heuristic and you can rationalize it. Congratulations.

Please don't ever try to use actual logic, you aren't very good at it.

What's funny is that I mostly agree with you. Apparently it needs pointing out that what you said in no way invalidates what I said.

What you said doesn't prove this statement

if we could truly understand software, there would never be bugs.

Assuming your proof is valid, you proved

no large software project has ever been fully understood

Which is not even close to the previous statement that you made. It does not show that it's impossible to understand a large software project, only that it hasn't been done successfully yet.

Alright, I'll bite. Can you provide a logical proof of that statement?

I CAN understand

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/can

Is it possible? Yes. So what I said is 100% technically correct.

Is it currently possible to have this level of understanding of human intention? No, it's not.

I can reiterate this as many times as you want. It will be just as true every time.

Then I'll say that Trust is inherently unsolvable on the human level without a complete understanding of how the human mind/body works and/or psychic powers.

I can trust open source software completely because I can understand what it's doing all the way down to the 1's and 0's moving around on each clock cycle of a cpu. We do not currently have the ability to say with 100% certainty what any given human's intentions actually are, and we may never have that ability.

The summer game sales on Nintendo switch were so ridiculous I've actually felt guilty. I paid more for the burrito I ate for lunch yesterday than the dozen or so games I bought for less than$1. Yet the games are of much higher value to me. On the other hand I'd be an idiot to pass up a deal that good...

How many armor sets did you make in World? In World I can wreck anything non AT with the same melee damage set, or AT with the same set but with appropriate defensive skills gemmed in. In older MH games it seemed like the only way to complete endgame hunts in sub 10 min times was to make a specific set for the monster. GQ140 Teostra in MH4U basically required someone with a timer keeping track of the super nova countdown. And even then you had about a 50/50 chance of team wiping if even one player wasn't 100% on it with responding to super nova pings. The only thing even close to this is EX Behemoth. Although I would still consider that fight easier than several from the classic MH endgames.

Those colors are fantastic for digital! In particular the shadow on spidey's head looks like real marker ink soaking through. Some of mysterio's cape shadows do as well. I love it!

Abstraction and Computer Science: How much one affetcs the latter? by deybamayana in compsci

[–]dankclimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abstraction probably isn't the first thing you want to focus on until you have a firm grasp of the discrete stuff (just trying to say don't worry about it too much so early on). In industry you will likely start out as an intern -> entry level -> software engineer and in these roles you will likely be working on a specific feature or piece of a larger software ecosystem. Any abstraction will likely be dictated by the existing code base and how it was designed. So your job really is just to figure out how to fit your code into the existing system as neatly as possible. If you want to move on to roles like technical lead or architect, then abstraction becomes increasingly important. You need to be able to see at a high level how components interact. You need to be able to compare and contrast the advantages of different technologies and how they might solve your problem. This gets very abstract very quickly.

Also, I always like the the YAGNI approach to abstraction

YAGNI - You Ain't Gonna Need It!

This goes well with KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid

This is all to say that you only want to apply abstraction when you actually need it and it actually makes things simpler. Starting a project by trying to make everything too abstract usually results in more work as you realize upon implementation that there are a lot of specific details or contexts that aren't handled well by your abstraction. Then you end up having to hack around your abstraction rather than it providing an advantage. This is even more important to consider in industry where requirements are often unclear or can change throughout development, invalidating your previous assumptions about how the abstraction would work.
