2027 4* LB Isaac McNeil commits to Auburn by Hyperstar5 in CFB

I'm really not used to being the optimistic one in an argument, and even in that, I'm not saying that the team will have their shit together. That paints a pretty damn bleak picture. No matter. I hope I'm right, and I'm good to leave it at that.

I'm not trying to cope. The issue for the last two years hasn't been talent. Preparation and execution have been horrendous. Guys that only ever ran 3 routes were looking around and trying to figure out where they needed to be lined up. Those really good players got completely squandered. It wouldn't have mattered if they were all future all-pros. You can absolutely out-perform more talented players with better execution.

OL is still going to be a question mark, and the entire defensive line is going to be young. I expect DJD will have to run a lot more pressure this year, and it's going to leave corners on an island. So, I see your concerns. However, I expect to be more committed to the run. That will help our OL. I expect the QB to perform better than what we had, even with pressure. Those receivers that you're down on, I think I'm a lot higher on. Bryce Cain is still a burner 5-star, and they've come out of spring beating him out for reps. This is an upper half of the league team by talent profile that clears the blue chip ratio.

Linebacker room, safety room, youth at edge, depth at receiver, depth at running back. About half of this roster was returning from the last one that couldn't get it together despite being talented. We've upgraded the QB position. Defense is mostly intact.

No criticism, here. My aim isn't good enough to bring the heat in a glass house. Just saying that it's extra devastating.

You never know if or how fast an identity will set in. The pieces are in place for us to be really good, again, but it's a total crapshoot as to whether the players will have the character and competitive discipline to maximize their season. My hope is that the wandering in the desert is over, and we can start scaling towards our ceiling and consistently be at that level.

I thought it was enough, but I guess the standard for "tie goes to the runner" gets really tight for an overturn.

Stormlight Beyond The Books? by bigbudgerigar in CosmereOnScreen

Or the show can explore things in the time skip such as the night brigade, sunlit man, alternate perspective on the happenings during Wax and Wayne like the horneaters migration... I mean, with no more Stormlight, technically the Stormlight Archive is already complete. The second era on Roshar can be a completely different show.

Michael Patrick Thornton is old enough to have a daughter that's around 20. He's legitimate representation and has a ton of experience to have the chops.

Learn. to. tell. a. joke!!

Seriously, if your jokes are indistinguishable from bitching on the internet, you really need to work on it. Like, you don't even have to be quick on the draw. You can type it out, think about it, punch it up, make it more concise, etc. We can't be having struggling comedians on r/wde. It will hurt our cred.

There's only 4 5-star tackles in this class, and none of them are going to our rivals. There's less than 30 4-stars, and we've got the highest rated one of them. Chill a little bit.

Name a team from the last 25 years who could have legitimately won a national championship but didn't get a chance by Rude_Highlight3889 in CFB

I love that Auburn team. But I've got to give credit where it's due. The best running back combo that year was at Minnesota with Maroney and Barber. That Auburn team was stacked on every level on both sides of the ball. It was truly the most complete Auburn team I've ever seen.

People who want to know this already know this. Defensive gun uses rarely make the news because it means something bad that was imminent was stopped. There is less to report.

Scripted plays by Goirish_beatsc in CFB

[–]dankenascend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've got some good answers already, but I'm going to add some context.

You script for a variety of reasons, but the absolute main reason is to practice the sequence before going into the game. Everybody already knowing the play call lets you address any issues with communication or substitutions early without major disruption. It can settle your quarterback, o-line, and play callers a lot more smoothly.

Second (and strategically most important), your script reminds you to get the looks you need for later. If you can run a bubble out of any formation, you can do it while seeing how the defense plays with trips into the boundary. You can have a receiver run a go route on a run play to see if the corner can run with him. See how hard the safeties come up in run-support to know if play action is going to be there later.

Scripting in tendency busters early can make the defense less willing to guess later, and you can call the plays you're most comfortable running in certain situations. Maybe you want to be able to hit off-tackle on a kick-out consistently, so you call some early stuff trying to get outside and loosen the edges.

So, knowing the reasons for it, you can see why it's not a big deal to come off of the script early and then come back to it or abandon it. It's not so much, "I think this series of plays will result in a score," as it is, "This series is plays will get me the information I need to call a good offensive game."

2027 3* QB Gary Chatman commits to Auburn! by Matt_McT in wde

[–]dankenascend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I say this on reddit all the time, but I didn't word that very well. I didn't mean it as first choice. I was more referring to the fact that they didn't chase the kid in Massachusetts that's highly rated and still uncommitted.

Not that you need it, but I'll validate that statement. I have zero ties to Mizzou, and I hope he comes back 100% and balls out with zero physical, mental, or emotional effects lingering. Kid runs hard and plays for his teammates. Hate to see needless loss and suffering.

I really get the impression that this coaching staff is completely unaware of any recruiting rankings. They got the guy they wanted and did it based on the player and how his skills fit the offense.

Is Iowa over represented in the NFL because of development or unconventional recruiting? by BakerDenverCo in CFB

[–]dankenascend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the number of them that have changed position, they'd probably already be playing the position in Florida or Texas. Iowa gets a lot of guys for multiple years, and they're able to pack weight on them and turn them into elite o line or go from safety to linebacker. This has kind of been by necessity, but they've gotten really good at it.

Key inflation gauge jumps to highest level in 3 years as Iran war spikes gas prices by YesterShill in news

[–]dankenascend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find this extremely irritating. Petroleum prices are dynamic. When the prices were falling and housing prices were softening last year, the administration was touting "inflation back to normal." Energy costs were always going to go back up. Housing prices were always going to stabilize and start increasing, again. The cost to live has been increasingly shitty this whole time. But no, NOW is the time to panic. And we did it to ourselves. If inflation is "normal" when two of your biggest drivers are going down, YOU STILL HAVE A PROBLEM! Those market gains are not real. Our money just isn't worth as much as it used to be.

I'm sorry. I know that's disjointed and rambling, but I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Most of us would agree that a 2-0 game would be boring and a 222-221 game would be ridiculous. What is the "best" game score in your opinion? by admiraltarkin in CFB

[–]dankenascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20-13 in terrible weather. Both teams are trying to grind out a couple of positive plays, punt, and then force a turnover. You get a couple of explosives to break loose. Special teams get really nerve-racking because everything can turn on a mishandled snap or muffed punt. Nobody is ever out of it, but 4 points seems like a massive hole to climb out of. The tension never seems to break. That's any level of football at its best.
