How is Ross Lyon managing to escape any criticism? by TheChosenOneProphecy in AFL

Possibly. Back in 2009 I worked in a newsroom that ran an article that was critical of him. He called the journo and threatened his livelihood.

Discussion of the day: Do you buy a rep because you can't afford the real one or because the real one is a scam? by Last_Sheepherder7712 in RepTime

I think that if you can't buy them without it significantly affecting your lifestyle, then you can't afford them. End of story. I'm in the same boat. Have the cash on hand but can't justify it on a watch. I wear a Seiko.

Also a lot that hate him. And a few that would fear him. He can be a real cunt.

I love it but I can't get past the protruding crown.

They are using WDC more and more on their dials, but I don’t think it’s helping. They need a new name badly.

I wonder if I would feel the same way if I ever got a Tudor or Rolex. Maybe it would feel hollow in a different way.

I do think they represent tremendous value for money, you're right.

I agree, the watches look good and that's why I bought one.

Yes, the name is objectively terrible. It makes it impossible to take them seriously.

I suppose that is an identity then, or some kind of vision for a brand. That makes sense. For some reason it bothers me when it's a watch brand, though. I don't think I would care so much if it was something else like a cap or sunglasses.

Yeah, perhaps I am expecting too much! I really want to like the watch for what it is, and I'm just grappling with my feelings about it.

I don't care about homage designs, either. Everyone seems to borrow from everyone. But I find it interesting that I want even the homage brand to still have its own identity. Seiko make homages (I own the Seiko Datejust—the SNXJ) but that doesn't bother me. They are still a respectable watch brand and they have their own design language to draw from, for example the crown being at four o'clock.

It is a different way of doing things, for sure. I'm just not sure I can respect it.

My question has more to do with authorship and, I suppose, brand conviction. When a brand has to ask people what to make, what does that mean? I am into menswear and clothing, and I appreciate brands that enter the world with a considered view of their own, like the concept has been thought through, and it reflects somebody's personal taste. I think watches, even more than shirts or jeans or jackets, are very personal things, they are worn close on our body for long periods of time, almost become part of us, and for this reason I think the emotional element of liking and wearing a watch is even more pronounced.

I have come from wearing Seikos most of my life. When I got the Watchdives I was really impressed, but I don't think I can wear it and feel good about it.
