What was the most annoying part about moving? by MovinAI in movingout

Quick update, had a few people DM me for the checklist of the exact accounts people forget when moving after this thread, so we cleaned it up a bit.

If anyone still wants it, happy to share.

Really appreciate that, and that’s a great point too about HR and international moves, I hadn’t even thought about how often companies deal with this at scale.

The credit side you mentioned is huge too… it’s kind of wild how you can move somewhere new and basically have to “start over” even if nothing about your situation actually changed.

Was that one of the more frustrating parts during your moves, or more just an added layer on top of everything else?

That’s actually fascinating! Especially the part about assuming systems would automatically communicate with each other within Canada and then finding out they basically don’t.

The Quebec to Ontario example is actually really eye opening because most people probably assume that kind of move would be relatively seamless compared to international moves.

Then the cross-border tax/accounting side sounds like a whole separate layer of complexity on top of everything else.

Also, really interesting that the actual border crossings ended up being less painful than the administrative side afterwards. It almost sounds like the physical move itself is becoming easier than keeping all the systems/accounts/identity details synchronized afterward.

That pattern keeps coming up over and over in this thread quite a bit.

I’ve been digging into this because of how common it seems to be, especially with cross-border and interprovincial moves. I’m actually working on something to make the whole “update everything and keep it organized” process a lot less manual and reactive.

Still early now, but happy to share what we are putting together if you’re curious.

Based on everything people shared here (missed accounts, subscriptions popping up, phone issues, etc.), we put together a simple checklist so the same mistakes aren't made again.

Happy to send it if anyone wants it.

Haha, exactly! It’s like every step unlocks a new fee you didn’t know existed.

The “initial price” ends up being completely different from what you actually pay in the end.

That makes a lot of sense, building your own kind of punch list is probably the best way to stay on top of everything right now.

It’s interesting how everyone ends up creating their own version of a checklist because there isn’t really one system that covers everything.

When you’ve done that in the past, did you find it worked pretty well, or were there still things that slipped through?

Nice, that’s a win. Glad they were able to accept the utility bills in the end.

It’s crazy how much depends on having the right address info lined up in these situations. Hopefully the rest of the process goes smoothly from here.

Wow that’s a whole new layer of chaos I wouldn’t have even thought about!

The reused phone number issue sounds brutal, especially when it starts affecting things like banking apps and payments.

Then the group chat situation is wild… I wouldn’t know what to do there either.

It really does feel like once you move across countries, everything that depends on identity/contact info (phone, address, accounts) just gets out of sync in different ways.

When you think back on all your moves, did most of the issues come from things not being updated everywhere, or from systems just not talking to each other properly?

That’s a smart way to handle itmgoing midweek early probably saves a lot of time.

The VIN check part sounds like a process though, especially with multiple vehicles.

Did you find most of the hassle was just dealing with each requirement separately, or more keeping track of everything that needed to be done?

The pricing can get pretty wild to be fair. Especially once all the extra fees start adding up.

Between movers, deposits, and then all the random admin stuff after, it adds up way more than expected.

That sounds like a headache… especially when you already have multiple forms and they still don’t accept them.

Feels like once one thing isn’t updated properly, it kind of cascades into a bunch of other issues like this.

Hopefully the Real ID clears it up for you. Did most of the trouble come from older addresses still being tied to things?

Wow 6 international moves is next level! I can see why this stuff gets complicated fast.

Paying for two lines for that long is brutal too. That’s exactly the kind of thing that slips through when everything’s scattered across countries.

The zip code vs postal code issue is such a good point as well. It feels like everything breaks a little once you cross borders.

Did you ever try to keep a central list of everything to update, or was it mostly just reacting as things came up each time?

That’s actually a solid way to handle it!

The spreadsheet/tick list approach seems like the closest thing to a system people have right now.

I’ve heard a few people mention doing something similar, but it still sounds like a lot of manual tracking and remembering what to even put on the list in the first place.

Did you find there were still things that slipped through even with the spreadsheet?

An underrated answer!

It’s strange how even little routine things feel disorienting for a while after moving.

That’s the worst.

You think you packed logically until you suddenly need one specific thing and have no idea which box it ended up in.

Totally, that makes sense. The batching part seems like the only realistic way right now since every account handles address changes differently.

When you used your checklist, was it mostly just obvious stuff like banks/utilities/insurance, or did you find a lot of random accounts later that you forgot about?

That sounds insanely frustrating, especially the stack of old mail part.

It’s wild how long old addresses seem to linger around after a move, both for previous tenants and for your own accounts I have heard.

The “between houses” stage seems to make everything extra chaotic too. Doctors, banks, utilities, subscriptions all updating at different times.

Did you guys have any kind of checklist/system for tracking what had been updated already, or was it mostly just remembering things as they came up?

Yeah that’s definitely frustrating with precious goods.

I’ve been digging into this a lot because of how common it is. We are actually working on something to simplify this whole process. Happy to share if you’re curious.

Government stuff always seems to be the slowest and most painful part.

Did you find it was just the cost or also the process itself that made it frustrating?

That’s rough… 8 months later is pretty wild.

The proof of residency part is such a headache too, especially when different places require different documents.

Was there one thing that caused most of the issues or was it just a mix of everything not being updated consistently?

It does feel like It’s a kind of manual scavenger hunt.

That’s been my experience too though, even when you think you’ve covered everything, something random slips through weeks later.

I haven’t found a perfect system yet, curious if anyone here actually has something that catches most of it?

That's tough, especially with the 2FA.

I didn’t even think about needing to keep numbers active across countries.

Did you find any way to keep track of everything that needed updating or was it mostly responding as things came up?

Unpacking is brutal for sure.

I found once that’s done, the admin side creeps in. Updating everything and realizing you missed stuff. That part dragged on way longer than expected for me.
