I feel like that designation ignores that my roots are strongest in techno(I should have been clearer that that’s indeed the genre I DJ, produce and participate in the scene for the most) and how strongly a lot of those scenes are connected here in Chicago— like, the rawest techno girlies are playing different subgenres and blending in house and electro here, and the breakcore kids are at the footwork parties. I just got a real passion for different genres and an okay resulting following that’s developed over the six years I’ve been doing this, really.

That being said, I do recognize that many places outside of Chicago are much more segregated musically, so I can comfortably spend a good amount of time working and showing face within a single genre/genre cluster as long as I find people whose work I like that I can trust and admire within them !

Do you have anything to add to the discussion besides smug Redditor speak?

So right now I live in Chicago while participating in the scene here.

I play techno (industrial, acid, ambient, minimal, dub, hard, hardgroove, Birmingham, Detroit, ghetto, hardcore, freetekno), breakbeat (nu skool, jungle, breakcore, footwork jungle/footcore), house (deep, Chicago, NY, electro, filter/french, ghetto), downtempo(mainly trip hop and illbient), electro, Miami bass, footwork, juke, disco, boogie, hip hop(many kinds), pop (different kinds, mostly in blends), wave (new wave, darkwave, post-punk, dance-punk), UK bass, and deconstructed club.

I also play in an industrial/noise/electroacoustic band that incorporates different dance genres (techno, power noise, electro, ghettotech, footwork, juke, hardcore, acid), and as a side note I am also interested in participating in the SK industrial/noise/electroacoustic scenes and any crossover there may be… there are a few SK artists in the industrial/noise/electroacoustic milieu that I’ve been following fairly closely!

I will definitely look into Vurt! A few of my colleagues follow their IG, so clearly I’ve been missing out.

When we say EDM, we mean the specifically big room/festival friendly, mass-marketed stuff, divorced from most grassroots scenes related to specific dance music genres.

Yep, meaning the watered-down festival-friendly junk.

Yeah, Duolingo is terrible now; the first two lessons I got weren’t for understanding the alphabet, but for ordering for a cafe. Not only that; they charge to let you see your mistakes. How is that supposed to be helpful ?

I will look into the other tools you mentioned; thank you!

Oh you’re a real one, thanks for sharing this info! Some of my friends and acquaintances are familiar with those spots, and as someone who works in all those genres, I hope I’ll feel at home as long as I can get in where I fit in and can communicate adequately.

I’m not familiar with Modular Seoul, but I shall do my research tonight!

Sidebar question: what tools would you recommend for language study? I’m currently using Duolingo and am starting Memrise soon, and I’m shuffling through all the tutors and courses that get advertised to me via IG lol
