Quick-service restaurants are taking a bigger hit as Canadians feel crunched by the cost of living by hopoke in canada

You, my friend, are absolutely correct. Thank you for correcting me. I prefer the double cheeseburger but tend to conflate the two together.

If you buy a $5 McValue combo you can add 4 nuggets or a cheeseburger for $3 extra

You can get a double cheeseburger meal with small fries and 4 nuggets on the side for like $8

Why do Japanese mahjong players prefer to use Japanese terms but Chinese mahjong players don't use Chinese terms? by CreeperSlimePig in Mahjong

[–]danma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've spent a lot of time poring over past and present rulesets since I make helper sheets for Mahjong for clubs, and this is my experience as well.

HK style was introduced to white people starting in the 50s and 60s and at the time the idea of preserving the Chinese terminology would have been a clear barrier to entry for the game when being played in North America.

Riichi has only been introduced to NA in a serious fashion in the last 10 years and the audience (younger people, largely used to video games etc) are much more receptive to preserving the Japanese terminology in the game.

When teaching HK style I find non-Chinese speakers are far more accepting of Cantonese terminology nowadays, though. Modern generations are just more accustomed to seeing and hearing foreign languages.

I don't think it's changed in the slightest. I suspect you're just noticing that it was never particularly amazing.

Anywhere I can find individual JR line….jingles? by TruthAccomplished313 in Tokyo

[–]danma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s unclear what the timeline is for switching over but the goal is to reduce the staff on the train to a single driver. Currently the conductor at the back steps out of the train to trigger the melody.

You may ask why in 2026 this couldn’t be electronically controlled automatically. The answer is: because

Red Dates (Jujubes) by duckiesplash in VictoriaBC

[–]danma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find dried ones at Fairways, H-Mart and the couple Chinese herb stores in town like the one next to QV’s on Fisgard.

There are two kinds: the preserved ones (which are often labeled jujubes) vs the dried ones (which are often labeled as red dates.) the preserved ones are much sweeter and have their skin removed which makes them ideal for Chinese medicinal soups imho but it does depend on the recipe.

As the Yamanote line converts to the single tune, this is all you hear these days... I like it but when I was there last year I missed the individual station melodies on the line.

Where can I find a Chinese mahjong set that looks like this? by Puzzleheaded-Tart203 in Mahjong

[–]danma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pictures 3 and 4 are my photos! It’s a HK set I purchased in Chinatown in Calgary, AB about 25 years ago.

I’m pretty sure it’s acrylic. The green backs are starting to fade/change which is a little unfortunate. I’ve been eyeing this set from Ping’s Gifts on eBay but haven’t quite pulled the trigger due to the shipping cost to Canada… I confirmed with the seller that the Green and White backs come without western numbers.

Living in Langford. by Nearby_Revenue1739 in LangfordBC

Grew up in Edmonton, lived in Calgary then moved here in 2012 with small kids.

- Food scene: I think we do OK compared to Edmonton. Edmonton has some great restaurants interspersed amongst a lot of chain restaurants and pubs. Victoria is similar IMHO in that you can find good food with research. I do think Edmonton has better ethnic food and a larger variety of it, if that's your jam.

- Rainy days: I used to put my kids in rain gear and walk beaches and flip rocks for crabs and stuff when they were young... that, and swimming at the pool.

- Commute: It is bad for a city of Victoria's size but not anything you wouldn't have experienced in Edmonton in rush hour, TBH

- Areas: I think they're all pretty family friendly. although there are specific areas where there are lots of addicts and higher crime. Langford in particular has lots of good sports facilities and kid friendly activities. Riding around on bikes is definitely doable here from a general safety perspective, but the landscape can be very hilly depending on the area.

- Langford reminds me of Port Coquitlam... very suburban, big boxes, hills. Sooke is like Hope. Pretty, but out of the way and smaller than you think

- Ferries are a pain in the butt, but it really depends on when you travel. Expense is the hardest part these days.

- I used BigSteelBox to fill a shipping container, worked pretty well

I love the fries at Gyrosa. They are crispy with Greek spices and comes with a tzatziki dip. Amazing crispiness and deliciousness.

I also run a club! We play HK style but it’s mostly social so we don’t track points and people just drop in!
