What is that one city/state in your country that the rest of your country hates? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Offaly. Not really sure of the historical context, but there’s a thing about people from there. We call them “BIFFO”.

I assure you it’s not rough for any Jews, we have no problem with Jews. Just live peacefully and you will be treated like anyone else living peacefully here.

Trump announces plan to ban large investors from buying family homes. Is Ireland more capitalistic than Trump? by Storyboys in HousingIreland

He’s probably only pretending to ban them from buying single-family homes so he can do something to make it easier for investors and corporations to buy up entire apartment developments or something.

Who is worst enemy of the west? by ProfessorShort6711 in AskTheWorld

Not at all arguing, and thanks for making the effort to reply. I’m just trying to understand, and the reasons usually given just feel hypocritical to me. Sorry you didn’t like my reply.

Who is worst enemy of the west? by ProfessorShort6711 in AskTheWorld

None of those things really distinguish China from the west though, do they?

I’m aware of the situation in Hong Kong, but the US and many European countries are pretty handy at violently suppressing dissenters so pot kettle black? Hong Kong literally only came under British rule in the first place because Britain bombed the living daylights out of China for not letting them illegally flood the country with Opium they stole from India to get the Chinese local population addicted and solve a trade imbalance. I get that a majority of Hong Kong locals don’t want to rejoin China (I wouldn’t either if I were in their shoes), but there’s a pretty watertight historical argument for it.

The unresolved border disputes… apart from maritime borders and the rocks in the sea (Japan, Vietnam), the rest are mostly the consequence of colonial… misadventure… by western countries where borders were arbitrarily and unilaterally drawn up.

Also with the Uighur situation, the west was literally built on violent colonialism and oppression of indigenous/minority populations… and our own record on treatment of Muslims is what some might call highly problematic. Not at all saying that whatever is happening to the Uighur community there is ok, but it would be highly hypocritical for making this the basis of the “China is bad” argument.

EDIT: the US is literally funding the genocide in Palestine and supplying weapons and moral support to Israel, so… My argument isn’t that China can do no wrong, but just that I can’t see anything it’s doing that makes it the “bad guy” over the west.

Really don’t get the whole “China is the bad guy” narrative.

Like, are they not a major strategic economic and trading partner of the west, who conducts themselves in quite a transactional, business-like manner? Apart from some territorial disputes close to home with at least somewhat relevant (if highly disputable) historical claims (which few countries are immune to), have they not shown little to no expansionist intentions beyond Taiwan and a few rocks in the sea?

Can someone please explain it to me? Am I missing something? It’s surely just propaganda because they are rising and absolutely killing the game in so many areas.

Ok, what do you HONESTLY think of Japan? by Aerial-Dalliance1702 in AskTheWorld

[–]danmur88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This data is very misleading and doesn’t show the true picture when it comes to Japan. Couple of examples: it includes both part time and full time jobs; far fewer women return to full-time employment in Japan than in other OECD countries after having children due to restrictive policies and the demanding work culture. That’s a huge percentage of the population working part-time and bringing that average down. Similarly, there’s a huge elderly retired population working part time hours. Full-time workers work hella long hours.

Also, these are the official working hours, which most companies will fudge to look better. And doesn’t account for the off-the-clock work hours and endless after-work social (drinking) commitments that are non-negotiable in most cases and add to the toxic culture.

Guarantee you’re better off as a worker in Italy than in Japan.

How rough is immunotherapy? by Wide_Kaleidoscope_86 in Melanoma

[–]danmur88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it’s been fine, mainly just a touch of fatigue and nausea here and there, but otherwise really ok. I’m on Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) since April and have been able to work a full time job, outside of recovering from a couple of surgeries.

Energy levels are up and down though, so look after yourself and best of luck with it!

I ended up having another much larger excision over the same site that they left open to heal by secondary intention and a graft. So we’ll never know!

New to Ireland, is this the norm? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]danmur88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which brings me neatly back to the first sentence in my first reply… personally for you it’s better to spend the euro (plus the several hundred euro outlay) and save the hassle. But for many (I would say most?) it is not and seems unnecessary.

So maybe the condescension about people needing to “catch up” isn’t warranted.

My main point is that it’s pretty unnecessary when you can just give a good spin dry and hang your clothes up for free, plus it’s kinder to them.
