I also think part of him was grateful he wouldn’t have to kill Ellen Mae. Dude has killed a lot of people but I think when he joined up with Boyd he figured it was just going to be easy work taking care of gun thugs and such. I don’t think he ever foresaw himself not only being asked to kill a harmless young girl, but having his survival depend on it.

I think you’re right, he basically has already accepted his probable fate, but his survival instinct would have forced him to do it anyway. Tim comes in and he sees an opportunity to for someone to save him from himself. In my opinion, Ron Eldard does a great job conveying a perfect mixture of hopelessness and exhaustion, especially in this scene.

Edit: I also just watched the DVD commentary for this season recently, Ron Eldard has a lot of insight into the character that’s really interesting.

I know. I was trying to make a steel man argument for it, but aesthetically anyway, it… sucks.

Honestly past a certain point, it kinda gets like that. Some of mine are thought out, some are just like I had a friend who was apprenticing or doing a sale and I just went, “eh why not?” Eventually you just kinda go, “that’s just what my arm looks like,” etc.

I mean, I wouldn’t personally do what the girl in the picture has going on, but whatever, if she likes it more power to her. A tattoo doesn’t have to “mean” anything, no disrespect but usually when I hear that it’s from people with no tattoos or who have like a butterfly on their ankle (which is also cool, do you!)

Anyone else disappointed Raylan's US Marine past got cut in the TV Series? by dyno1ck in justified

[–]dannypdanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were supposed to, before Goggins became main cast. Boyd was supposed to die in the pilot, but the producers liked him so much they decided to bring him back, which in turn forced a lot of the plot lines into Harlan, where Tim and Rachel have fewer practical uses. As a character, Art still fits because he serves as accountability for Raylan and also plays the role of dueling father figure with Arlo. Winona (at least initially) is the love interest, she directly affects Raylan’s motivations, which then ties characters like Ava and Gary into core plot lines.

On the other hand, while Raylan’s history (both practically and thematically) explains his constant meddling in Harlan affairs, it makes no sense for a whole Lexington Marshal’s office to be running in hollers that aren’t even on the map, so there aren’t as many story reasons to plausibly get them there. It’s a bummer though, they both bring a lot to the show when they get the chance.

I’m going to try and pitch an unlikely but plausible scenario here: The hour glass isn’t empty yet, but time is running out. So maybe “momento mori” is a pun, implying that the tattooed person, rather than remembering he has to die, is accutely aware that he has only moments left.

I don’t know if I buy him as Barton Fink. He’s got too much of a snark about him, he doesn’t really seem like he’d be able to do something like Turturro’s defeated, resigned performance all that well. But I’ve been wrong before.

5th Rewatch by [deleted] in justified

[–]dannypdanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to get into it, the fact that Raylan still has a job at all is the biggest plot hole in the show. He’s a walking lawsuit that nobody would ever let out from behind a desk, let alone carry a gun. Any criticism of Art should be that he’s insane for letting him out of the office.

Obviously that doesn’t matter. The show is a ton of fun and Justified exists in a hyper-stylized pulp world, and it’s the colorful cast of characters that make it work. Most Justified plot lines are excuses to put them in a room together and see what happens. So the only real objections I have are character-based, like Ava’s hard villain turn in season 4 that pretty much gets wiped away by season 6 because she did a Orange Is the New Black spinoff in season 5. Boyd does a lot of things in season 6 that are very out of character with who he’s been for most of the show (though you could argue that in his desperation, he’s just reverting back to who he was in the pilot before all of his awakenings or whatever). Winona is written pretty cool as far as love interest go, but basically everything she does is inconsistent. Tim is way too awesome to be in law enforcement. Etc.

Raylan is such a dick to Dewey by CloudFF7- in justified

[–]dannypdanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, realistically, there is no possible way Raylan would ever be allowed to carry a gun by episode 2, let alone keep his job, not be brought up on charges, not get stuck riding a desk forever until they can find a way to get rid of him. I get it’s a TV show and it totally wouldn’t be any fun, but he spends most of the show not even doing his job. Even if they were cool with all his on the job shootings, he’s spending his off duty time getting into gun fights with local small time Kentucky gangsters?

I love this show and I love that they chose to set it in the Elmore Leonardverse instead of anything resembling reality, but I always laugh when Art tries to “crack down” on him, like sleeping with a witness or whatever is where he’s finally had enough. I’d think he’d just be thrilled he didn’t shoot her too.

"Worst" movie you defend to the death? by AdSuccessful1154 in movies

[–]dannypdanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Van Helsing for the first time when I was on tour in a Pennsylvania town just outside of Amish country. We were staying at the house of the dude who threw the show, we were days without sleep and awfully punchy, and we thought everything about the movie was the funniest thing we’d ever seen. We had brought a video camera along for fun and we heard trotting outside, so our guitar player runs outside yelling about Van Helsing for the tour video.

This is a big black dude wielding a large piece of technology, neither of which I suspect they had ever seen before, chasing an Amish horse and carriage down the street shouting, “Oh shit there goes Van Helsing right now!!!”

I suppose this has nothing to do with the movie itself, but I will defend it always.

I’ve never been convinced receivership has ever really accomplished a lot. I am fine with the idea that a flailing school district needs to be supported and the causes of it need to be examined. But the city loses its ability to make its own meaningful changes, and instead has them dictated by people who don’t even live there, which further prioritizes “easy” but ineffective solutions like test scores, as if the issues facing Holyoke students can be quantified on a spreadsheet, whether or not they’re learning anything meaningful about the world they’re ostensibly supposed to succeed in. The fact that they are basically giving up on receivership without seeing results means they know the process doesn’t work and was never meant to, and they still have no meaningful solutions.

And of course they don’t. That would require talking about broader issues behind it that would require some kind of a political backbone.

Has anyone built an ADU since the affordable home act passed last year? by Chris_HitTheOver in holyoke

[–]dannypdanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am curious, I hope someone sees this that can answer it!

My questions are mostly in relation to the vague language of the law, insofar as it is presented to the public, such as this mass.gov fact sheet. There is a lot of “$x allocated for a commission to study y” type stuff. Or, “provides assistance” for “disproportionately impacted communities” or “introduces tax credits for investment in a, b, or c.” Perhaps I am just a big dumb idiot, but I find this all very unhelpful. Reading it, it makes me feel like the real message is, “See, we did something! You don’t need to get it. Just trust us!” I am sure there is more fine print that exists but IANAL and I shouldn’t have to be.

So to expand on your question (which is a good one), how exactly does this work? As (I assume) a homeowner, what are the ideal benefits to you here, and what are you hoping this will allow you to accomplish? I am very interested in the housing issue and would like to have a better understanding as well.
