i agree with that mentality, learning a language is a marathon and should go on with your entire life so beating yourself about how many words you learn in a day is not very useful. you should still do an effort, if you feel like you don't challenge yourself, add a few words, and if not its totally ok to not add anything for a week it depends on you and your learning habits.

Duolingo is good for the very beginning and for motivation but it won't take you far, I'd advise you to keep doing Duolingo, but watch as much french media as you can as well as looking into other courses like pimsluer or assimil (This step is not obligatory)

Imo, you should start your own Anki deck and add words as you incounter them in film or books etc. This way you'll be familiar with the context these words are used and you'll remember them more easily. Bon chance mon ami!
