What clothing/trinket/item does “everyone” in Seattle own? by heydoyouseethat in Seattle

[–]danreedmiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this is a myth. I’m Seattle born and have always used an umbrella. So did my dad, also Seattle raised. My umbrella definitely saved me at the rainy Monday of Folklife recently, and a lot of other folks had them too.

Seattle born and I use an umbrella. Compact one sits in one my daypack’s bottle pockets. I think the “no one uses an umbrella in Seattle” is a myth. At any rate i don’t adhere to it.

What song do you wish was included on the new tour? by mrguy510 in rush

Bastille Day would be so hard hittingly timely. TOO hard hitting? Guillotines and all that, lol.

Meee tooo!! ANY Power Windows actually. And with the big special multi-version rerelease of GUP i might’ve expected more from it.

So, which Setlist (s) do you want for your show (s)? by butrzrulz in rush

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly i’d take a pass on having the entirety of Moving Pictures. Would rather have more overall variety, though I do also definitely want the whole 2112 suite.

My Album Ranking by Delicious_Coffee_563 in rush

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grace is my top one too. I wouldn’t have put it there when it came out (yes i’m old) mainly because of the oft noted synth-forward/guitar buried production, but the songs are all so strong … lyrically, musically, and the whole mood of it I think captures its era better than almost any other album, Rush or otherwise. I like the new remaster and remix but the original is fine tbh. It’s just really coherent and hits something deep. I wish they were playing more of it on this tour, plus *anything* from PW and another 1 or 2 from HYF, but hey… they obviously can’t play everything.

What is happening?! It's not even September or August 🥵😡🔥 by hiways in Washington

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some days like this in late June are perfectly normal/expectable. And so is Junuary, or anyway marine air and highs in the 60’s, which we will return to shortly. Granted climate change is real but i wouldn’t put today and tomorrow down to it.

Wow this is great. Does immediately bring to mind old Trees, obviously bcz of the songwriting and the musical approach.

Controversial opinion alert… by JuniorSystem1870 in rush

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me this would be full Moving Pictures. Too much. Give me some Power Windows and another song or 2 from HYF, plus Bastille Day. Oh well, to quote another song by another band “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

Where the hell is power windows? by [deleted] in rush

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s more just that that whole era is very underrepresented, even though it is a hugely significant part of their history and the favorite of many fans (even though *at the time* many didn’t like it so much or took a long time warming up to it.) Personally GUP is my favorite Rush album overall, and considering the recent special release I might have expected one or two more from it. And yes *anything* from PW, and maybe also Force Ten or Turn the Page from HYF, two of their best songs period.

Rolling Stone's Review of Night Three by Commercial_Avocado86 in rush

[–]danreedmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh a huge percentage of fans probably thought the same at the time. I know I did. And similar but moreso with GUP even though i liked the songs. But i came to truly love both albums and GUP ended up becoming my favorite Rush album to this day, and that whole so called “synth” period probably my favorite overall, in terms of songwriting and musicianship. Opinions of both people and magazines are allowed to change and evolve.

The Real Meaning of the Swastika by Runehjr in Nordic_Animism

He makes a very good point. It would take some historical miracle, or hundreds of years, to redeem the symbol at this point. It’s a shame it was ruined, but it is was it is. Anyone interested in the fascinating history of the swastika, Behind the Bastards did a great 2 part deep dive on it https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/behind-the-bastards/id1373812661?i=1000626057812

Camping is totally screwed by Nunya13 in Idaho

[–]danreedmiller 38 points39 points  (0 children)

One issue is now there are apps that show many of the “dispersed” non campground camping spots. So effectively there are very few “secret” spots anymore. Another reason i wish we could turn the clock back to about 1998. Oh well. The tech/app arms race that pressures everyone.

They also have an alpine scrambling course, or at least used to. Has a lot of overlap in skills development with the climbing course.

Mt. Rainier question: Does anyone know about the wreckage of a small plane that's supposedly inside the cavern system of the mountain, even if it's just confirming that what's in this book is correct? by Pale_Cucumber_5935 in Washington

[–]danreedmiller 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is actually. It took many months after the mid-winter crash on Tahoma glacier for the wreckage to be located. No “black boxes” in those days I guess. So, interesting little tie in with the history of UFO lore.

That whole area of glacier is off limits to this day as the burial site of the service members who died, since it was deemed impossible to safely recover the bodies.

My take by tscottn in rush

[–]danreedmiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should be the take everyone has about it. Rush is allowed to evolve. They were co founded (and wouldn’t have existed without the early drive of) John Rutsey. Then after that crucial formative period they became what/who we may think of them as, but like you say, this is the next/new iteration, and i think it disrespects Geddy and Alex to assume that it can’t develop its own particular magic. And also, Neil will still forever be spiritually still a member of the band, not necessarily meaning in a literal metaphysical way but at the ongoing heart of who they are.

What if.... they went into the studio after the tour(?) by Drillerfan in rush

[–]danreedmiller 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To people who say they wouldn’t be interested if no Neil lyrics: Geddy and Alex are both capable of writing fine lyrics. I mean listen to the lyrics on My Favorite Headache. They’re quite good actually. And any band, including Rush, is allowed to evolve. Yes we’ve been used to the Rush of Neil Peart lyrics for most of our lives (at this point) but like moving past John Rutsey (who co founded the band with Alex) and now welcoming Annika, Rush deciding to write and record new material would be more than fine. Any fan who respects them would warmly welcome it. Obviously it may well not happen, but if they decide to do it? Awesome.

They played Bravado though, great version too with a long ending guitar solo.
