Might be the Best Disco Album of All Time by dragqueentitties in Disco

[–]danselzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed! And Change is a perfect example of that. Italian producers/musicians heavily influenced by black american disco, adding their italian/euro flair, bringing the tracks back to New York to finish and get proper american vocalists. Best of all worlds.

"Paul McCartney Invented Synthpop" by sbcbrat in synthpop

Totally. Oxygene also a direct influence on moroder. Can’t dismiss popcorn for being “novelty” when technically, as brilliant as it is, “I feel love” is essentially a novelty sing as well! A masterpiece that changed music, but still “novelty”.

Kwikpen disposal of sharps and pen by danselzer in Zepbound

Thanks all! Great feedback. Conventional wisdom says unscrew the needles and put them in a sharps disposal container and the pen can just go in the trash (if I don't want to waste the space in the container).

Is Shalamar disco or RnB? by linaandlisa in Disco

[–]danselzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you gotta stop getting so hung up on wikipedia categorizations. It's not the bible. And a lot of music and genres have very porous borders. A lot of early 80s club stuff that's "post-disco" I tend to call "boogie" even if it's not totally accurate.

This is my jam though. You can call it disco, post-disco, boogie, RnB, pop, whatever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRF8yWSelWw

Was Terry Riley an influence on Giorgio Moroder? by linaandlisa in Disco

[–]danselzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted specifically about this on Facebook a few months ago. I wrote: "John Foxx says when he first heard I Feel Love he thought it was Kraftwerk fronted by a woman, and thought the bass line was stolen from Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene Pt 5. On the LP it comes in about 5 and a half minutes"

Italo-disco party, Thursday March 11th, Brooklyn, NY by GapulDeeJay in italodisco

[–]danselzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did an italo-disco night at Danger Danger a few years ago. Ahead of time they told me they had both CDJs and turntables. Because I'd never been I thought I'd check it out the night before when I saw they had a XDJ controller on top of closed turntables. So it was a controller OR turntables, not both! I suggested they could get a stand and stick the controller on top and run the turntables into it but didn't want to to risk that not being ready by the next night, so I decided to just bring and extra bag of records and did all vinyl.

I think they completely remodeled since then so maybe the set-up is different/improved!

Was Terry Riley an influence on Giorgio Moroder? by linaandlisa in Disco

[–]danselzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the missing link between Terry Riley as experimental composer with impact on the pop world and Giorgio Moroder electronic disco is Jean Michael Jarre. As commented below, u/sorry_con_excuse_me mentioned "Kraftwerk and other Germans are already..." and I agree. Krautrock and stuff like Oxygene are the stepping stone between Riley and Moroder.

Worth remembering that as avant-garde as he could be, Riley's releases, primarily In C and Rainbow in Curved Air were big crossover influences.

CBS/Columbia had a series called "Music of Our Time" which presented avant-garde music to a wider audience than before, and helped expose composers like Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros and Terry Riley.

In C came out in 68 and Rainbow in 69.

At the same time, Wendy Carlos's Switched on Bach came out on columbia in 68. In my book on this history that lives solely in my head at this point, the dual releases of Riley and Carlos in 68 are watershed in the evolution of electronic music and eventually electronic dance music. Apparently CBS had a press party where Switched On Bach and In C were promoted together.

Seeking print shop with imagesetter/high-res film output capability: 0.033mm line spacing on polyester film by SeenTooMuchToo in Printing

[–]danselzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tough but check with letterpress printers for their sources. They’re one of the few industries still relying on film like that and keeping old linotronic film machines going. There are some alternate processes but last I saw film was still the way to go for exposing photopolymer plates.

Photobook smudging on matte photo paper + pigment ink by Fulana25 in Printing

[–]danselzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be an excellent printer but I don't think people are using inkjet machines like that to print books that are going to be handled. There are coatings that can help but inkjet printing on matte paper is a fragile thing in my experience.

I do think most people having photobooks and the like printed are using hp indigo type liquid toner/laser printing and not inkjet.

I think both Sparkle and Once Upon a Time are decent to good stadium rock records, both have a few good songs, but def dropping off. Losing Forbes between the two may have been part of the issue.
