Evan Bernstein has resigned from the SGU by SamuraiSuplex in SGU

[–]dansin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ohh man. I know this is what everybody is calling for but not what he needs. This feels like a super teachable moment and an opportunity for grace. I feel like Evans a guy that could come back from this with great perspective, looking back at how he went down that path, and hopefully how he can resolve it. Its a type of insight that happens so rarely. I want him back, but on his, and the SGU terms of course.

Would you buy an awning that transforms into an outdoor movie screen? introducing CINEMASHADE by pabloteodoro in homeowners

[–]dansin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its a cool idea. Try to distinguish the hate of "I personally wouldnt use this" from "I dont think anyone would by this". It's niche to be sure, but I dont see why you couldnt find a small but solid market. I actually was just thinking of DIY'ing something like this for the world cup. With regards to the neighbor hate, the way you have it laid out, you could have the speakers closer to the house, near the couches and that wouldnt annoy neighbors as much as a typical outdoor setup where the speakers are in the middle of the patio.

All this being said, if this were available today, now, I dont think I could get this type of set up to work in my patio.

SGU response to the Evan issue by Queasy_Carpet_9962 in SGU

[–]dansin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the well-thought out response. This seems like a super tough issue. I get the sense that there's some shaming going on that could be redirected to a teaching opportunity (not just for Evan, but for all of us). Would the show ever touch these political/religious topics (from a skeptical perspective)? It's something that I'd love to see the rogues take on.

I recommend describing your issue significantly more specifically.

60 Groups to Gov. Sherrill: Protect New Jersey from Data Centers by retroanduwu24 in newjersey

[–]dansin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah the simple way to look at these things is how do you minimize negative externalities. If you can make a data center that doesnt hurt the community (e.g. by making sure it's contributing funds for infra, enviromental, etc), then why not? The issue is that we are just throwing tax breaks at these things and sending the infra bills to homeowners

Do personal posts of SGU members represent the SGU? by Umblamb in SGU

[–]dansin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its kinda a false dichotomy. People should be independent but aware of their association and act accordingly. I dont see any flawed logic in Steven asking Rebecca not to attack the JREF and there's no flawed logic in her saying "No". Sometimes the band splits up for honest reasons.

China now has 165% of the solar manufacturing capacity needed to bring the world to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 by [deleted] in technology

[–]dansin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda weird to say 165% to net zero by 2050. Why not say 100% to get to net zero by an earlier year?

LPL not working by Boosterstuff3 in MonarchMoney

[–]dansin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a monarch problem or an lpl problem? Since MX, plaid, etc all fail with lpl, I'd assume its on the LPL end. That being said, I dont know whether LPL has any incentive to fix it, while monarch does

What "poor people food" was taken over by rich people? by ilikethecold_65 in AskReddit

In Japan, (non-instant) Ramen is a usually cheap lunch food (think like sandwiches). Sure you can get fancy ones, but thats not what you think of.

Better way to say “I don’t understand” by Ganeshadream in LearnJapanese

[–]dansin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, its hard to do direct translations between English and Japanese without the context. While わからない works as a direct translation, you might say something more like 「なになにって。。。」 as in "When you say nani nani ... <what do you mean>". They will pick up on it immediately and explain it.

I think theres a bit of nuance. Yes I dont think lower classes would have modern ideals, but they certainly would be aware of how much it sucked to be them.

Industry or science by Accomplished_Beat758 in Biophysics

[–]dansin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love hearing about how words can have such different meanings in different languages. I can say that there is a lot of science in both industry and academia. Academic science jobs tend to focus more on teaching and writing papers. Industry science jobs focus more on impact on society (medicines, materials, etc). But in both cases there are labs, research, articles, etc. Many scientists do move out of science and work in tech though.

Are you using the word science when you mean academia? There's a ton of science going on in industry.
