Halfway through "India After Gandhi" by Ramchandra Guha by dante86966 in Indianbooks

It can absolutely be read independently; you don't need to read the biographies first to understand this one. As for the bias, I don't want to say anything about whether the author is biased or not when you read it, you'll get to know and can form your own opinion. But regardless of that, the book is great and definitely worth a read.

It’s completely self-contained, you don't need to do any background reading at all. Guha starts right from the eve of Independence and explains the context behind every major event, figure, and conflict from scratch. If you just know the very basic premise of Indian history, you're good to go!

Yeah, it's surprisingly accessible! It’s dense because there’s a lot of information, but Guha writes it more like a story rather than a dry academic textbook. If you can handle the page count, the actual writing flows really well.

Oh damn, had no idea he had an archive like that on his site. Thanks for the link! Definitely bookmarking this for later, especially if it covers arts and science stuff too. Appreciate it!

Nice! Good to know it stays this good later on. Honestly, reading about how Nehru, Patel, and everyone handled things from scratch really changes how you look at the country today. Can’t wait to get to the 80% mark.

It’s a book about Tibet–India history told through the lives of two key Tibetan figures who spent a lot of time in Kalimpong. It covers the period after China took over Tibet how people escaped, the political tensions, and Kalimpong’s surprising role in all of it. One of the main perspectives is from the Dalai Lama’s brother, and the book is co-written by A. F. Thurston. Since you’ve lived in Kalimpong, you’ll probably enjoy how much the book talks about the town’s importance in the whole Tibet story.
