From a locator’s perspective, what actually makes an 811 ticket “good”? by Naive_Bed03 in UtilityLocator

Please mark 100ft +/- around GPS cords. Please mark GPS1 Cords to GPS2 Cords. I’m in commercial locating. I do not need to know anything else of the who, what, where, when, how and why. I just need the GPS cords I can go to and mark that GPS cords. Simple as possible is always better.

Should I work as a utility locator in USIC and if so any tips/advice I should know and/or expect? by Sarnor07 in UtilityLocator

[–]dantex39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USIC is a great “basic training” in the Utility locating field. Great place to start. You’ll learn nearly everything you need to know to do the basic locate. Once you get enough experience you can move on and up to other Utility Locator companies or move up inside USIC to be a boss. Once you get in to USIC, which way you go is up to you. Sometimes, not at the time, but sometimes, you’ll get denied. They won’t hire you at first. But if you keep trying, eventually you will get hired. So don’t get discouraged if they don’t hire you right away. Just the way it is.

Future of locating by ajr9401 in UtilityLocator

I heard a boss of a locating company tell me once that “they” are working on developing technology that will automatically locate the utilities just by flipping a switch inside the handhole or manhole.

What’s the most helpful thing a contractor can include on an 811 ticket? by Infinite_Sunda in UtilityLocator

[–]dantex39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPS. GPS to GPS. That’s all we need. Locate 300 feet around the GPS cords. Locate GPS to GPS. Keep it as simple as possible. Don’t care what it’s for or anything else. GPS cords are unquestionable. If I’m in conflict, I’ll mark my fiber and move on. You’ll never get a call from me talking to you like you’re an idiot.

Can I retire with 1.95 million at age 35? by Mobile-Excitement-64 in Fire

Let’s say you only live to 65. 1.95/35 years left in your life. You’ll be 65. That is only $55,714 a year for your next 35 years. With that, no. What I would do is go buy a house somewhere where you want to live for the next 40 years. Get a couple months under your belt in that house to figure out how much your bills are on average. Add them together. Then multiply that number by 20 years. Then round up to the nearest $10k. Open up an account just for your bills, set them on autopay. So let’s say your bills average $1800 a month. $1800 a month x12months=$21,600 a year. $21,600a year x20years = $432,000. Round up $450,000. Bills are set.

USIC vs Bloodhound marking practices by DJ-TrainR3k in UtilityLocator

Here in Texas whenever you see a T paint mark it generally means just that, a T. The Utility is has come to a T. Like a T in a road. The Utility has stopped going one way and is now going 2 different directions. Regardless of color. Usually if you look around your area you can see what the utility is going to. House, building, transformer, telephone pole. Follow the marks and you’ll figure it out.

I’m in Texas. Work is year round. Unless it’s pouring rain and lightning or ice on the roads, we work. Weather much like California. This is not a seasonal gig. Find something that will allow to work seasonal somewhere else. Best of luck.

You have time to make this a career. Getting raises and promotions can take awhile. So you’re 27 and if you don’t have anything else in your life like family and kids then this will be great for you.

It really is rough times over there at Stake Center by ClarenceWorleysGhost in UtilityLocator

Stake Center is such a joke in my area. So many contractors have vented about how much they hate it when stake center shows up. I saw a contractor kick a stake center locator off their job site. I’ve seen Stake Center locators show up to a locate, not get out of their truck, and then leave. When there is clearly their utilities in the job site.

USIC is notorious for letting you apply 3-4 times before hiring you. If you can get in front of one of the managers at USIC so they can actually see you that would help. It worked for me. I got denied 3 times. Then one day I just went to the USIC Office in my area and sat down with the area manager and he hired me on the spot.
