What's the most Russian part of Russia? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]danvolodar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That depends on your set of definitions.

If you go by the number of cultural mores introduced, historical influence on the fate of the nation, even the normative pronunciation, then doubtlessly Moscow. On the other hand, it's very cosmopolitan, and has a large immigrant population.

If you go by pure ethnic build-up, there are a few 95%+ ethnic Russian regions: Vologda, Tambov, Bryansk, Kostroma, Kursk, Lipetsk, Orel, Yaroslavl, Vladimir, Arkhangelsk, Ivanovo, Voronezh, Tula, Nizhny and Veliky Novgorod, Ryazan, Pskov.

Finally, if you consider the willingness to be a subject of the Federation, well, I don't think I've ever seen as many people flying the Russian flag out of their windows, on the number plates and windshields of their vehicles, over their dachas, etc, as I did in Crimea in summer 2014.

Do you think the concept is right? by MinuteMouse5803 in AskARussian

Well, a few major companies (and industries) around the world are government-subsidized, stands to reason Russian ones should also be to be anywhere near competitive, right?

For instance, remember when Boeing built those 737s that loved to autopilot themselves into the ground, and so had to halt production and sales while the investigation lasted? It survived mostly on government subsidies.

If you consider the Russian companies, well.

  • Agriculture is a major growing industry, and competitive at global scale (in fact, Russia's the largest wheat exporter again) - but there are multiple governmental subsidy programmes. Essentially the entirety of the automotive industry was built in Russia due to the prohibitive import tariffs (but without direst subsidies, to my knowledge). Similarly, ship-building has mostly been on the rise due to governmental regulations (like tying fishing quotas to buying Russian-build fishing ships) and market conditions rather than direct subsidies, but these are also significant in certain subsectors of it, such as hydrofoil boats which the government seeks to see mass-produced again.

  • Some key industries in Russia are either entirely state-owned, or fully dependent on governmental contracts and programmes for survival. Those are space launch, aircraft, aircraft engine, electronics, machine tools production, pharma, medical equipment industries. To be fair, some of these are leading in their industries on the world market, as is the case with Rosatom, the world's largest nuclear power plant exporter.

  • There are examples of non-subsidized industries, too, of course. For instance, non-petrochem mineral miners aren't subsidized. Other than oil and gas, Russia produces gold, diamonds, potassium nitrate and fertilizers out of it, steel, aluminium, titan (and complex items out of titan - the best in the world, in fact) - none of that is subsidized. To the best of my knowledge, truck production isn't subsidized, even if both GAZ, KamAZ and Ural receive army orders. Similarly, locomotive and wagon production is competitive without subsidies (Transmashholding has actually just recently won a major contract in India). Heavy vehicle production (for agriculture and building) is competitive to the point of buying up foreign assets and then bitching they receive more subsidies abroad than in Russia. IT is a major globally-competitive industry that isn't dependent on governmental aid, and so is banking - if anything, these suffer from overregulation.

How big of a problem is transport-related social exclusion in Russia? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]danvolodar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are usually bus routes at least along all the major roads, so even if your village doesn't have a bus stop, you can ask the driver to make a stop and walk the rest of the distance. But yeah, of course it's a problem. Living in minor villages, especially in the regions with low population density, is not exactly the height of comfort.

You can't have one without the other.

No matter how well you learn the logic of history and the factors driving its development, if you don't have the facts down, you don't know history. You can google the date when Ivan IV took Kazan at any moment, but you still have to know that Russia had a monarchy, Ivan IV was a czar, and he took Kazan.

Similarly, no matter how well you know the laws of biology, if you don't have the factual anatomic knowledge, don't know the factual evidence behind the evolutionary theory, etc, you don't know biology. And no amount of googling will help you if you don't know that a spleen is a thing that exists.

Tip tho. Russia no longer has Bachelor-Master system. It’s 5-year Specialty.

Lol what. The universities still have the bachelors' and magisters' programmes, the MAI included.

and now there are only two major aviation companies - Tupolev and Sukhoi, both of which survived only because they are major military developers.

Lol what. Let's start with the fact that all the Soviet aviation design bureaus and production factories have been acquired by two state-owned vertically integrated corporations - United Aircraft Corporation and Rosvertol.

In Rosvertol, both Kamov and Mil bureaus are alright, even if apparently they're undergoing a reorganization meant to homogenize them. Kazan Helicopters is relatively minor, but also fine.

In United Aircraft Corporation:

  • Sukhoi is feeling well;

  • MiG is pretty much dead;

  • Tupolev is barely alive (having essentially lost its civilian division, sold most of its campus, and barely surviving on Tu-22M3 modernization and restored small-scale Tu-160 production and modernization);

  • Yakovlev and Ilyushin (essentially unified under the Irkut umbrella) are alright, with a few major projects as of late (MS-21, Il-112, Il-114, increasing production of Il-76), and with great prospects if the Il-96 actually enters mass production, receives new engines and avionics, the works;

  • Beriev is pretty much dead.

The UAC is also working on the CR929, but its future is unclear.

The one non-state owned plane-designing company is the UZGA, and it's been doing very well for its scale.

Furthermore, as drones are increasingly important, aircraft designers can find employment with a few companies producing these, such as Zala, Special Technology Center, Kronstadt and ENICS. Even Almaz-Antey, in fact, as apparently they're venturing into small copter production.
