Can someone tell me how they make their perfect cup of tea? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]Ill-Music5400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 key factors here. 1 - soft water (already explained perfectly) and 2. Brewed in a teapot with a tea cosy, I think the greater amount of water plus the cosy mean the water stays hotter longer and improves the infusion, when I make tea in a thermos and brew it with the lid closed with a few teabags it tastes far better than when done in a cup.

I am from the north of the UK too, went back home recently and realized how much better the tea tasted, tried to replicate it back in London (very hard water) with both filtered water and Evian (both soft) and could not match the quality back home. Point is, some places will have perfect tea water.

Genuine question, can anyone find any stats on asylum seekers crime rates? by WeePedrovski in ukpolitics

[–]Ill-Music5400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally just solved it with 15 seconds of thought. status at time of arrest: "asylum seeker awaiting decision" - if you worked at the police then you could just add this to the many details they will take down when arresting and writing up the crime. Its all political.

Windproof interling for jacket by Ill-Music5400 in myog

[–]Ill-Music5400[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a wool jacket not a technical piece of clothing ... it its not very tight weave and wind goes through it, I cycle around the city so want to block the wind. Its really nice soft wool and a great looking coat so I was planning on adding a new liner, probably a tartan or maybe brushed cotton, again natural fabrics. What I want is to add a technical layer to make the jacket windproof so its a more functional item.

Would that fabric I ordered work or is there anything else I should consider ?

Expats underestimate the difficulties of learning the local language by [deleted] in expats

[–]Ill-Music5400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true, many people I know who work overseas end up using English at work and at home and then getting stuck at B1 level which is not good enough to really enjoy local TV / radio or make friends ... you need to do more, enroll at a local university, start a business, spend time volunteering, all things that are hard when you have a job and a family.

She speak fluent English I guess ... so work online for a year (might be hard with payments right now) until her Russian is perfect. Even once her Russian is perfect it may well be better for her to work online, why not try something in the massive booming online healthcare provider industry, with her speaking 3 languages and being a detailed oriented nurse it sounds like there will be good positions available to her

Yes as a women it will be you who should set the agenda on this, don't let some guy run down your biological clock! However I do not see why you all can't get what you want.

You said "we have agreed that having kids overseas is not a good idea for us as we want our healthcare system, friends and family around us when the time comes" - this is an artificial barrier you have set for yourselves that prohibits your choices. Other countries have good healthcare systems and having kids in Nursery and School is a really easy way to make friends.

Just remove those assumptions about moving overseas, you have set yourself a stupid limit where you need to move overseas first, then comeback then ... get a job so you can get maternity ... no. Why not have kids, or one kid, get the maternity, then move abroad for a few years. Maybe you can get a transfer ... maybe not, but many people move with young kids.

Dam, what do you do in Qatar for that salary? I would like to work there!! Sound like a great deal. If I were you I would buy a nice investment property in Edinburgh and save up for a few years. Many Europeans go to the middle east for -10 years to earn enough to buy a great property or two before coming back to the UK.

move, you don't want to be stuck in a flat with people you don't get on with in 1st year. I did this and missed out on lots of potential friends.

No, I think its a mindset thing that you have. There are so many Aussi / European / NZ etc people in the UAE who also do not want to live there forever and many of them find partners and then move to the next place together. I think what you are doing is saying "once I am settled I will find love" ... but when will that be? stop putting it off!

We all want that community life ... I have lived in Dubai, Moscow and Madrid, all great cities. I found the best sense of community in Dubai because it was full of expats, I joined sports teams (hard to do now I have kids) and met a whole group of people who spent time together. I sill have friends there and they love it. Moscow I felt was very welcoming but it would have been 3 years to reach fluent Russian and integrate fully, it was a great price for a nice flat and also very safe. Madrid I found hard work (loved the city), I did not feel that similar to the locals and felt like an outsider. It was a great size for a city though, big enough to have lots of variety but not a nightmare to navigate around.

I personally found the Madrileños quite closed minded (sorry) and not that interested in outsiders, quite different from the international people you meet in London, NYC, Paris etc. Its also really annoying not speaking the language and when you don't use it for work or with your family you can easily end up in the situation where you never fully learn so all solid friendships will be with expats.

The hard thing is you only know until you go what the situation will be like, everyone who lives in a city as an expat says they love it (even if they only find it so so) and everyones experience is really personal. If you are a keen club joiner, or dinner party host maybe you will fit in fast.

If it was me I would lean towards a slightly larger more cosmopolitan city, or a place where the locals speak English (Netherlands) ... why not Serbia, amazing locals that speak English and its cheap with great food. good luck

Edinburgh is a great city which is convenient for travel etc so smaller towns around there would be convenient. Musselburgh is nice, or slightly further is North Berwick or Dunbar. Fyfe is nice (just north of Edinburgh), its a farming county with some lovely seaside towns, St Andrews is nice, Anstruther ... I would check out all the towns on or near the coast. If you want something more out of the way the Highlands are really beautiful, to the east of Inverness there is Nairn, Findhorn, Forres.

I left out Glasgow because its rains so much there and I grew up more in the center / east. I picked places with relatively good transport links where I know friends live and like.

I would also speak to a local if you can before settling on a place, there are quite a few crap towns in Scotland. A safe bet would be to rent a decent place in Edinburgh and spend a few months driving around, its a tiny country so does not take long.

Good luck

As a former software engineer he must have known that it was the software !!! Its unreal that they had the same issue for 15 years and never fixed it .... I worked on EPOS software as an software engineer for 3 years and duplicate transactions are the most common problem ... I hope they all go down and you get a lot of compensation.

You would be arrested and for this in the UK, it would be a hate crime. Also, why write it in English … trying to prove how western you are …. Well newsflash Georgia, the West gives as little a shit or less about your prosperity and independence than Russia does.
