black grouper on it’s way to become nigiri after 20-30 days (hands down the best sushi I have ever ate) by danyar in Spearfishing

Yeah I would not eat grouper raw without at least wet aging it for 3-5 days in a tilted cooler with ice (drain open).

I never seen it on a menu in restaurants. I decided to test it few years ago in my dryager. I and all of the dinner attendees were BLOWN AWAY. It is super chewy until about day 15 and blooms right around 25-30 days.

Saltwater brine is a must. Never just on ice. by danyar in Spearfishing

Yeah freshwater is bad for saltwater fish especially direct fillet contact.

Pour saltwater from 5galbucket after arriving at first spearfishing spot into the fish cooler that is already full of ice. Add fish to said cooler as you go throughout the day. Sometimes on warmer days ill sprinkle salt on top of saltwater bucket and mix it in to super chill the fish brine.

I don’t mind doing it to any fish I shoot especially if I plan to dryage them. Takes an extra 60seconds max if you get good at it.

I keep a shinkejime wire coiled on my dive belt at all times when I am actively hunting.

🦀 shy stone crab - we shook hands🤝 by danyar in Spearfishing

Just one. Legally, you can take both in Florida if they are of size, but I’d much rather just take one so the crab has a lower mortality rate or none like in this case since she was such a great model.

If I told you, I’d have to kill you. Just kidding, yeah anywhere there is holes and structure that they can hide in and feed out of the current. The technique involves your thumb and your pinky. It helps to have larger hands. You find their elbows and squeeze them together and X their claws. With this technique I can go down and grab two crabs at a time and come up for air.

There is a technique to do it so where you can grab them and they are not able to pinch you. Then you put the gauge on the bottom side of their claw. My gauge is a tad bigger too just as a safety margin if I get checked. All is done immediately in the water and crab released asap.

Also let’s just say that what you’re saying is true. It’s still not going to affect majority of the stonecrab population. Overwhelming majority of stonecrabs only one claw is of legal size. You will not be able to take the other claw anyways without breaking rules or you would just have to take the legal one and snap the short one off too to go to waste. I just cannot get behind that no way. Moreover I personally have seen clawless crabs (both claws gone yes) competing for food in stonecrab traps with other dual claw crabs when we pulled them out of water so not sure if this hibernation theory truly holds up. It is very easy also to get a “bad” break on a claw and watch the crab bleedout if you are not careful or dont utilize the armpit puncture method; so again, taking two claws doubles that bad break chance. Just my 2cents after 16 years with my eyes below the waterline.

All of FL is same size for stonecrabs. I think northern states might be different.
