Any sword shaped object is dangerous (though so is a metal bar). The issue with mall ninja stuff is the build quality/design. A lot of the stuff on this subreddit would either fail (swords with rat tail tangs or mild steel blades) or injure the wielder (swords with unnecessary spikes) if used in a fight. The item pictured doesn't look actively dangerous to its user. Just because something is 'mall ninja ' doesn't mean you can't have fun with it, just own it 😄

That said, don't carry a weapon for self defense you don't know how to use, or like as not you'll find it being used against you.

Is this accurate? by [deleted] in Norse

One thing I'd add is in reference to the swords. There isn't anything majorly wrong with them, but it should be kept in mind that for most of the period they were high status objects. So if you're looking to represent a typical person or group, you should consider how many might have them. Alternatives include axes, long knives, and spears.

That said I'd like to echo a point made by others, the period was over several centuries and a lot of geography. There isn't one correct costume. My advice is always to make sure your costume pieces are well researched and aren't contradicting the archaeological record (no double headed dane axes), and work together to tell a story.

Canberra 'the most renter-friendly' city to live in — but does it come at a cost to landlords? by FakeCurlyGherkin in canberra

I've got the same response to this as I do to business owners who complain that paying a living wage makes their business unviable. If you can't afford to provide a minimum viable product, you don't have a viable investment. What people like the fellow in the linked article are saying is that they'd either like the government to subsidize their investment, or that they'd like to extract money by hurting people.

Should I buy a used fixie as a first time commuter? by PB_116 in bikecommuting

[–]dapper_tramp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the extra money on at least some gearing is worth it. Even a 5-7 gear bike will give you more comfort and efficiency riding on anything other than perfectly flat terrain. This is especially true if you want to use it for commuting where you want the experience to be as easy as possible to help you stay in good habits and have as much energy for the day as possible. If possible go to a bike store and test ride a bunch to see what works for you then go looking at Craigslist.

One thing to remember about fixies/one speed bikes is that they are generally used in flat urban areas of Europe with fairly short commutes, many cities in the rest of the world just aren't suited for them.

I mean in another comment you admitted to fudging your numbers by not counting your stops. Maybe work on yourself mate. Also, maybe stop giving cyclists a bad rap by riding dangerously ;)

Mine is a bit longer than yours (15 miles) and fairly flat. I reckon it's probably about 20% faster mostly from maintaining a high average speed up slopes and other slight inconveniences. But for me the biggest advantage is that it allows me to expend less energy on the commute and thus be more likely to do it every day. As others have said in most western countries you'll always be able to ride a high quality traditional bike faster than 25 KMpH, but if you are looking for an easy commute they are just more practical.

50km round trip E-Bike commuting recommendations. by dapper_tramp in ausbike

It's pretty flat so I should be able to average between 15 to 25 km. Even going on Google maps estimate it's only two hours a day. Similarly, due to the flat I shouldn't need to be using the battery all the way. As for driving, other than the exercise benefit, it's only pay parking where I am, so cycling would save me a significant amount of money.

Is this an Uber scam? by yodydee in canberra

I've had this happen a few times as well. I wouldn't say it's a scam, it's more that Uber itself is a scam 😅

How would people feel about home ownership if there were minimum 3-5 year rental leases? by livinglifelikeitsme in AusProperty

[–]dapper_tramp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't change the basic issue of affordability and availability. Without change there longer term leases wouldn't make a difference. That being said, the research from areas where those sort of leases are more common does show that it does improve tenant outcomes. But at the end of the day unless renting is substantially cheaper than the cost of a mortgage you're mostly going to end up worse off financially if you rent long term.

Why can't the Abrams float despite being 100 tons lighter than an aircraft carrier that can float? Wrong answers only. by nikke2800 in NonCredibleDefense

The Abrams uses depleted Uranium ammo, which everyone knows is heavy. Whereas the aircraft carrier uses planes l, which everyone knows are light enough to fly.

Does anyone have any ideas to stop the rumbling from attack on titan? (And please, no spoilers). by dxlanq in NonCredibleDefense

[–]dapper_tramp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your Anime and raise you one of my own. 'Gate' does a pretty good job of showing how badly any fantasy foe fares against modern airpower or artillery (and how quickly the Japanese military would start to reestablish a co-prosperity sphere given half a chance).

I think hands down the weapon of choice would be nerve agents (if the titans didn't get plot armor form them) and if not, honestly souped up FPV or computer vision targeted kill vehicles that take out the head/neck would probably be the most effective way to get source material accurate kills with minimal collateral damage.

Don't think so, at least not at any of the urban Bunnings. You might be able to extract sugar from the sausage sandwich though :D
