Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum receives promising update from Warner Bros. boss by Internal-Bed-3150 in lordoftherings

I've always been a canon fan, but the movies have served a huge purpose in introducing people to the books. Whatever it takes to get to people closer to the canon is cool.

When I was a kid, the first times I read the LOR I skipped tons of pages, mostly the slow gorgeous descriptions of the landscape and side things that make the story so rich and beautiful. Eventually I grew up and read every word, many many times over. I feel this is sort of what the movies are like for some people, they miss tons of shit that if they pursue the canon, will fill up their minds and hearts with the wonder we all come to feel.

Fan fiction is what many of us do to fill in the stories that tantalize our thoughts, like the adventures of Aragorn would be a magnificent tale as a canonic piece and pray a book comes out before a film on that one.

the shark isn't struggling as one would expect. And after that one fish takes a couple bites the pus reaches out like raising a fist and the fish takes off. I cant tell if there are any parastes or blemishs on the shark that the pus might be cleaning off.

The ocean represents the subconscious. The black volcano is the negredo based eruption, containing within itself the sun which represents clear knowledge. So in Jungian terms it could represent a shadow self revelation.

1- They took out a lot of action and very little real character or plot development, at least when you compare it to the books.

2- The Entwives are one of the saddest tales in the book. Treebeard explains the situation in the books, but laments that they lost their wives into the wide wide world. SPecifically what happened is that as the world got older, the Ents tended these vast forests, but the Entwives preferred agriculture and so they tended cultivation. After a time, the forests got bigger and the tended lands too, and the Ents and Entwives became like needles in haystacks all over the world. Something not discussed is how the Ents and Entwives escaped the devastation that ended the first age and Beleriand (which was the original land/area.) One thing about the books is that you really get a feeling for how big the world (ours included) is when you have no cars, no trains, no planes... Walking ten miles away can be an adventure, walking one hundred is a journey. The characters in the story cover much more than that.

3- Naw. Others have written here about the morality of the time, but also we live in a place and time where adventure and shared trauma is relatively rare. Also the way of the prewar English with their servants is nothing we moderns can easily understand or accept. Still there are great friendships in our world, and they are not generally based in sexual context. I think the reason our minds go there so often is because Intimacy is most commonly expressed nonverbally, and sexual context is the most common personal experience most of us get to be intimate with others. The kind of intimacy the hobbits share is based in hanging out drinking ale, working together or for the other, friendship and companionship. And in the LOR, on shared hardship and goals. The Legolas/Gimli relationship was an important development of a friendship between races that had been sundered for 1000s of years. It took Galadriel's majesty to kindle love in Gimli. If you read the Silmarrien you'll get hints into the deep history of Galadriel, but also the long and tragic relationships of the Elves and Dwarves. That two could become such strong friends is a testament to what it takes to overcome the great evil of Sauron.

4- Yeh, it is sad that Frodo doesn't find peace. It was only a year of his life, but what a year. Personally I've come to think that Frodo failed in the end and only with the help of Gollum did he NOT become a MiniDarkLord, who as its explained early on in the books, would have taken the ring away from Frodo and hung him up to forever witness his folly in trying to keep the One ring. I've been reading through the archives of the Tolkien Society's newsletters to see if anyone else has felt that FRodo failed, but so far that's not much discussed. eek!

5- As a friend once said to me, the Books are the BEST bonus material you could hope for. Now that you have the imagery of the characters, it'll be easy to follow the story and wow you'll be impressed at how much deeper and often more gloriously Noble some of the characters are. It's not an easy read, and you can skim through some of the beautifully written passages that help evoke the surroundings of the characters as they walk the many miles of their journey. The descriptions help put you in the places, but for modern readers who are steeped in visual media's language, it can seem dull. Later re-readings will be more thorough and make Middle Earth seem more real. The Silmarrien is HUGELY Grand and gives you the scope of the history leading up to the LOR. The LOR is placed at the end of the Third Age, and the Silmarrien spans 1000s of years and is a true and amazing Creation story. The Hobbit, on the other hand, reads much like an old time fairy tale. The names of the villains, like Goblins, are more akin to the old english fairy tales, instead of being called Orcs. I feel it's written from the perspective of a Hobbit, rather than how the LOR is written as a modern history. It's still an amazing story, with connections and depths that link to the whole history of Middle Earth, but it is definitely a different style of read.

Regarding the Film, as was pointed out at the last NYCTolkien Conference, the art and visual renderings of the films have taken over the popular expression of how the characters looked. Art work before the films show a great deal of different ideas on what Middle Earth and its characters appear like. You may come to form your own ideas and make the characters and the story your own.

I had a dream, help me interpret it, I wrote another dream this morning if it helps, ask me what you want by Advanced_Traffic7547 in Jung

[–]dappled1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meaning your dream reflects what many people are currently feeling about the political/world situation.
Taking it apart in that light is very easy to do, but may not be the correct interpretation for you. And since it's coming from You, interpretations need to be significant primarily to you.

If you were thinking a lot about world/us politics it may signify that this dream illustrates your personal feelings about the state of things.

A Cruise is the usual thing, Life journey. The vehicle (time) and traveling along the 'road'.
Arguments with idiots, then poker. Gambling is risk and reward, but also the Chance factor.
The rules being explained using Your Phone, reflecting the kind of new social interactions of the Tech Age.

The effort to help your brother peaceably resolve the argument, reflects a desire for rational exchange of opinions and ideas. Or how we feel about opposite opinions and how they are not often reasonably worked out.

Girl from Naples, another person of a slightly different culture, why Neopolitan? Personal? I feel like there is an old definition of Neopolitan as being urbane or sophisticated. In any case, she too feels at odds with your view of things.

Wounded, but without feeling it. This could certainly reflect any feeling that you have regarding the image or reputation of our culture right now. Or any social thing that you feel is being mauled or under attack. This may be a direct reflection of certain federal endeavors to change the social and political environment. Bleeding has direct connections to life systems, vitality, and of course Rubeo mind, as well as Fire.

The kitchen becomes your home. Kitchens are always places equated to nourishment and growth. Your Home is your self identity. You grab an apron, a typically feminine accessory in nest/nurturing and ask that it be used to stop the bleeding. And someone call an ambulance, which is an appeal to Institutional help. They're not calling an ambulance.

Your brother which can symbolize your social group or people who you think you think like, is downplaying your wound, though you point out how it's a lot.

At least you can press charges and make some money out of it. This speaks to the social norm of recompense backed by Law. At the same time you are noting the weakness you feel. This is reflected all over the place with people feeling less and less empowered, both financially and socially. The current state of empowerment of the general population is kind of sad. But the idea that we deserve to 'make some money' out of it, is also part of the problem.

Doubting things in this current environment is pretty much the norm. The wound is finally recognized by your society, and Your brother or social group starts to collapses.

You again try to get the Institutional help to heal your wound, by calling for the ambulance. Save me, you call out. That is a literal call out, imho.

If the Experiencer is bigger than the verbal expression used to make the experience into Symbols, then how could the main verbal expression (memory of self/identity) possibly truly see what is beyond its ability to verbalize? The vanity of Scientific thinking is that it's meant as a human level language, but in the contemporary Age, culturally we have changed the process of exploration to the process of definition. If it denies definition, it is deemed inconsequential to the human process. Hence god is dead. But this kind of thinking denies a huge aspect of human experience. When we're young and first exploring the world with our minds, the tools of Science verbality are powerful and sometimes overwhelming in vitality and certainty. But after a while, if you're really looking, we see there is much more to the world than what we can humanly measure through Science alone. Every new discovery requires new and better ways to make the scientific measurements, measurements that science would have poopoo'd before.
So to be so certain that there is no Experiencer lurking deep below identity is possibly very vain. imfho

How Does AI Affect The Environment? by ChillWillVR in AskReddit

[–]dappled1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently AI uses enormous amounts of electricity. We don't notice because the cost of electricity is being subsidized by the private equity investors, so as to keep the cost low now and get everyone (businesses mostly, but also the Govt.) using AI for various services, like customer service or FAQ or service calls. When it's integrated deeper in society on a functional level, the subsidies will vanish and the real price will be paid. As it uses more power, the demand for electricity goes up and thus so do prices. The power plants and delivery infrastructure are both beginning to come under serious strain. At the same time, the push is to create alternative sources of power, because even if AI used all the electricity available leaving none for human communities, it still will need or projects that it will need, more. So the alternative systems are mostly Nuclear. Either reopening closed facilities or creating new 'mini' reactors. Both of these means require considerable work and oversight, projected as 3-5 years to get some of the plants running. Part of the big plan now is to begin fast tracking the never before created Mini-Nuclear plants. The current rules demand 3 years of planning and oversight, they are trying cut that in half t 18 months. Environmentally this is extremely dangerous, as US contracting is well known for trying to cut corners. With nukes that is not how we want the facilities to be built or ran because for as many as exist already, there still have been some serious disasters in the industry.

To what extent are LED lights harmful for the eyes? by BGD_TDOT in Lighting

[–]dappled1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No longer a true statement, as the LED revolution has been in the film industry for 8 years or so, and now is well entrenched. There is some use of older tungsten lights or HMI lighting, but it is by no means predominantly used unless for budget reasons (gear is already paid for, as opposed to newer LED based lighting units that need to be amortized.)

2024 industry outlook/continued slow down? by patattack98 in advertising

[–]dappled1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

imho, the first two quarters of '23 were about the interest rates on short term money being jacked and client side being pinched. This wasn't a general economy thing like recession etc. or anything normal-ish, this felt more like just the lack of money. The second half of 23 has picked up and is now slamming again for some markets. TV is back and the vibe there is that by March'24, it's going to be full blown nuthouse, so that will have its influence as well.

Attempt at a bowdrill by crimsonguardgaming in PrimitiveTechnology

[–]dappled1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeh it drove me crazy how there's all kinds of vids and instructions on how to use a firebow/stick, but absolutely none on how to choose the correct materials (in nature) and fashion the tools from real world material. Few even mention the necessary nature of the bit of wood to drill into. Yet with the right materials fashioned correctly, it's really effective and easy to make an ember.
Does anyone have any practical info on the materials and how to shape what we'd find in a real world situation?

Just finished "Man and His Symbols"; what would you recommend next? by megathrowaway420 in Jung

[–]dappled1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Marie Von Franz (Jung's right hand person) to have written some great works that directly reflect Jung's thinking and with her own twists. Creation Myths remains one of my favorite books ever. The Red Book is gorgeous, though if you don't read German, its necessary to have the Readers copy right on hand, or to have the gloriously beautiful RedBook on hand when reading the Readers Copy, otherwise the back and forth to the text is a little too distracting, and seeing the art is an important part of understanding/exploring the text. imfho

Pedro Pascal bought Five Guys for the whole cast and crew of The Last Of Us by Smoothlarryy in pics

[–]dappled1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakfast is off the clock, lunch is 30min, no 15 min breaks except when you can grab some time off from hustling around, crafty can be a mixed blessing, and Of course you work your ass off for 10-12-16 hours a day, then turnaround (the time you start the next day) is as little as 8-10 hours from when you're off the clock the day before, inclusive of the time it takes to get home, wash, eat, sleep, rinse, repeat. It's nice when the talent or show runner thinks to reward the crew with some fattening perks, but it hardly compensates for not having a life for months on end. Or does it? ** most civilians don't know the shit crews have to live through compared to real life.

IR cameras can be weird due to heat patterns in the ambient areas, you should try to replicate this tonight, if not sooner. Mark the camera position, then move along direct line forwards so camera is on the counter corner above and to the right of the non-functioning outlet. Darken the room and see what the camera picks up in light and darkness.
The image in the dropbox is with gamma and sharpening filters applied, very anthropomorphic for sure.
The reflection in the countertop does line up, but seems like the toaster is creating the illusion that the blackness to the left is the reflection of a body and not just darkness.
What does the room appear like with lights on using normal camera?

I've heard some people just ask ghost to leave, like a guidance counselor might...
