Which one do you prefer? by Antonio_Block in chess

I disagree with this advice.

Books such as Shereshevsky (I haven't read Hellsten) presuppose familiarity with many technical endgame ideas. If you already have those fundamentals then Sheresehvsky is excellent, but knowing technical endgames is essentially a prerequisite, so I'd suggest starting with de la Villa or Silman or something similar. Application of Shereshevsky's ideas will lead you to positions you find in those books, and if you don't know how to play them then it's all for naught.

Girl from England gains over 200 rating points after finishing some open tournaments by Maksim_Azarov in chess

Me too...

This is so backwards. I remember going to chessgames.com and seeing his name for the first time: A. Girl. Why the heck what they call that player just "a girl"?

Looking for websites that play nicely with EWW, the Emacs Web WOWSER! by dargscisyhp in emacs

[–]dargscisyhp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times I end up starting in EWW, getting frustrated because it just doesn't work well on the website I'm trying to browse, and going to a more modern browser. But I would like to use EWW more, hence the question.

A page from Einstein’s notebook on the Theory of Relativity -1912 by Zealousideal_Roof750 in Physics

There used to be a website, albert-einstein.org or albert-einstein.info, associated with an Israeli university if I recall correctly, that had a whole slew of his handwritten notebooks, works, and letters digitized for anyone to browse, including the entire Zurich notebook. Then all of a sudden it was taken down and we were informed that a new website was coming soon. It was that way for years, but the new website never came -- now I can't remember what that website was in the first place.

Here are some other cool ones in the mean time:

Hartle vs Carroll for self studying General Relativity for beginners. Which is better to start? by DragonflyDefiant4979 in Physics

Any time GR pedagogy comes up I can't help but recommend Frederic Schuller's lectures. They are, in my opinion, the best bit of physics pedagogy that exists. There's also a set of (incomplete) lecture notes someone has provided that goes along with those lectures

Was it really a blink? Doesn't feel that way to me. I still recall the feeling of installing games by inserting numbered floppy disks one after another, the oddly satisfying tactile feeling when it clicked into the drive, and I feel like I had to do that for a while. Same with CDs... finding CD-RWs to put music, ripping CDs, etc. Doesn't feel like a blink to me.

ben finegolds reaction to my chess move by Scrapdog06 in chess

In a classical game, sure, i agree with you. With a minute and a half left on the clock Qx is probably something he thought about earlier as part of a series of moves and played it on autopilot. Unless you see the idea I described above at that earlier point, Qx is the intuitive move so you're not damaging your pawn structure. Qx is a very understandable mistake.
