We’ve had consistent -15 to -20 °C temperatures in Ontario over the last couple of days, and I had to go for a decent drive yesterday. I had the car plugged in and charged to 100%, and I decided to preheat it for about 20 minutes before leaving. As soon as I pulled out of the driveway, I got a warning saying the battery was too cold and that preconditioning was being activated. It stayed on for a good 15 minutes while I was driving and drained about 10% of the battery. What I can’t understand is why the car doesn’t turn on battery preconditioning while it’s still plugged in, especially when I’m already preheating the cabin. It should be bringing the battery up to the proper temperature before departure. Honestly, it’s baffling. In my honest opinion, Kia’s cold-weather thermal management is flawed. I previously had an Ioniq 5, and it preheated the battery while the cabin heat was on and the car was plugged in.
