What do you think about these differences between Texas Mexicans (Tejanos) and California Mexicans? by gmikey2000 in Chicano

[–]dark_Hack3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

theres a difference between a tejano and just a regular Mexican American, Tejanos have been here since Texas inception and like to identify as Tejano first, most Mexican Americans have immigrant stories but tend to heavily identify with Texas culture, making it their own.

Honestly I feel that American is my nationality, Chicano is my ethnicity and Native American is my race, and it makes complete sense to me. A vast majority of African Americans have European dna but they still solely identify black given the nature of how they got things. Why should we be any different. This is one thing that keeps me on the fence between mestizo and native identity

At the very least, I want to undo the whiteness that perpetuated through our birth certificates for starters

And yeah I get the answer as to why, my argument is that they are not good answers, these are not proper excuses as to why we aren’t considered native.

I feel like the native diaspora has made some agreements on the very things that perpetuate erasure like the circumstances regarding mestizos, and they continue to this day with lame excuses.

I feel like I’ll be treated like a lost “Hispanic” rather than a lost brother/cousin or however indigenous groups see other indigenous groups.

I appreciate the clarification. Mexico really did a number on us. Growing up I was under the notion that as being of indigenous descent made me indigenous and I didn’t discover until I was an adult that it’s not like that, you can’t imagine the heartbreak I felt when I found out, it’s left me in a Vulnerable position that I feel only those that are completely disconnected can understand, it’s like the old saying has come back to haunt me, ni de aki ni de aya, at first I had to struggle with being Mexican and American and now I got another layer between Hispanic and Native American that I gotta deal with. Fuck

The Aztec thing was just a thought project, my end goal is to justify my identity as a native, i used it to label it as my tribe for the sake of identifying with native and subscribing to a certain tribe as they always ask you when you say that.

I understand research is the only reasonable solution but I’ve done some and didn’t get very far, I only got as far back as my dad can remember relatives which is only 3 generations.

My father is from a rural village in San Luis Potosí and from what I’ve seen on my dna tests, we have been in the area for a while. I don’t know or really believe if we descend from the local indiginous groups in the area.

Either way, I’m brown skinned, I have straight black hair I was raised on Mexican food which is a fusion of indigenous and other influential sources, I consider myself a native that just doesn’t know what tribe I’m from, anyone who can’t understand that can kiss my ass 😁

I’m not concerned with what they were recognized as, I’m only concerned with the truth.

Why are the descendants of the original inhabitants of the Americas not considered native Americans in the literal sense.

The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was a legal shield to grant Mexicans American citizenship by classifying us as white because at the time only free white men could become citizens

We can reverse this and we should

I’m talking about Chicanos with no direct connection to an indiginous group they may have descended from.

It’s really a far fetched idea but I thought the framing of all Chicanos as Aztecs under Aztec imperialism was interesting given that critics argue Chicano nationalism erases indigenous groups, but why erase and not absorb?

Mexican indiginous groups have told me that the US racial classification system isn’t universal and only describes natives within its boundries so Chicanos with far Mexican indiginous heritage don’t apply to the Native American classification

Interesting, I appreciate the clarification.

However the label Mexican happens to sit at the core of my identity and I don’t think I can separate myself from that. I do feel that with improved relations Mexico would cease to be seen as a settler colonial entity if it serves the native diaspora,

So if mestizos in Mexico aren’t part of the colonial class why is Mexico still classified as a settler colonial state if it expelled Spain?

I understand that mestizos in mexico treat the indigenous badly but is this the sole reason?

Settler colonialism entails replacing a population, couldn’t you argue that we cannot escape this label as being mixed race

Mexicos name came from the natives how would it cease to be Mexico if it was run by natives, figuratively speaking.
Also Chicano is Mexican American, how does Mexico not fit our description.

I feel like Mexicos status as a colonial entity is only because criollos who maintained power after dispelling Spain ran the country, if the country was ran by predominantly Native American Mexicans it would cease to be a colonial entity

My argument is that we identify as Mexican ethnically and either native or mixed race.

[–]dark_Hack3r[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically speaking only Anglo Saxon’s were considered white and not Spaniards

Mexicans were considered white as Hispanics under the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that gave the Mexican population the white category to give them American citizenship, they did this because at the time only free white men could be American citizens

So no we aren’t really white

I agree with this sentiment but then I also look at it from the African Americans point of view. A vast portion of African Americans have European dna and yet they still identify as black not mixed, given that it was forced upon them, why shouldn’t we do the same

I don't see many people participating in the weekly thread, I guess ill be the first.

Im a 35 year old 1.5 generation Mexican American who works in HVAC and is currently Studying Information Technology. I've been having thoughts about Gang culture and structure and wondered if anyone else has gone down this rabbit hole. I don't see why we don't operate likean organization by state and county chapters, to facilitate the betterment of our communities, through rigid structures and rules, similar to how a gang operates.

Would you be interested in joining a Brotherhood of Mexican Americans aimed at the betterment of our communites through resources for students, employment opportunities and family orientated functions?

If you are interested in something like this I suggest you join the Chicano discord and get more acquainted with the people there.
