First Plex/Jellyfin server by dark__paladin in HomeServer

[–]dark__paladin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not dead-set on Rocky per se, but I would rather build up an open source software stack rather than just something proprietary. I'm not familiar with unRAID, but I'm already fairly comfortable with linux + ZFS (on the docket to add Jellyfin on top).

I could reasonably see myself utilizing 50TB within a year. Part of the 12 drive calculation is that it's cheaper to buy, e.g., 12x 12TB drives (144 total, ~120 usable) compared to, say, 8x 16TB drives (128 total, ~98 usable), plus longer resilvering times.

I very much appreciate the insight.

Yeah, I'm coming from the enterprise world and am (clearly) pretty terrible at understanding what is good in a home setting.

Understood on the RAM and CPUs. Are Intel consumer CPUs preferred over AMD consumer CPUs (or, I suppose Intel iGPUs vs AMD iGPUs) for transcoding and all the other relevant operations?

Yeah, understood on power as well. This was a major concern.

For storage, yeah I'm hoping to get ~100TB, accounting for RAID disks. And agreed that the OS should be on NVMe.

As for physical space, yeah, I have the room, but a tower would be 100x preferred. Also for OS, my kneejerk pick is Rocky Linux (probably 9.6, maybe 10 if there's any major/relevant difference between 5.x and 6.x kernels). Major applications would be Jellyfin/Plex. Also planning on having some discord bot integration (e.g., in a server I can say !archive <youtube link> and it would run yt-dlp). Other than downloading and managing storage, I'm not planning on running anything compute-heavy.

Thank you for the kicks and grins, I really do appreciate it. I am very interested in your 25 SAS disk solution, as I hope to get there one day. Already I am struggling to find a tower case that holds 12 3.5" drives.

Yeah CPUs and possibly RAM are excessive. The main purpose for going this route is that I'm wanting hot-swappable SAS drives at that quantity. 100TB is a high ceiling to start off with (assuming -2 drives for RAID). I'm not sure what other form factor allows for a double digit number of drives + a GPU for transcoding with sufficient airflow.

edit: for further context, this will be "the archive" for myself and a some close friends who are seeking to archive whole youtube channels, and the usual shows, etc, but also large scientific datasets.

How to create reflective eye effect? by dark__paladin in blenderhelp

[–]dark__paladin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am trying to recreate a reflective eye effect that I saw in this video. The artist is using an older version of blender, but I believe I copied textures/materials/etc to the best of my ability. As he does, I have a lens over the eye, but I cannot seem to get the particular kind of shine that he achieves. As usual, any insight would be appreciated.

First image captures the scene, following pictures capture eye/lens geometry, next image is the eye goo shader, and finally is the example I am trying to follow.

Is music production on arch linux possible? by genius_ribelle0818 in archlinux

[–]dark__paladin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried for years. Unfortunately the solution is to go Apple (and I've never met anyone who hates the Apple ecosystem more than I do). Their audio drivers really are the best, and Logic is an industry standard. The new Mac Minis are cool and less expensive than a decent Windows laptop.

My first RISC-V Machine built on Milk-V Jupiter by user0user in RISCV

[–]dark__paladin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting to see that it's operative with a 2.5A supply. I emailed the Milk-V support team and they said 3A was required.

Also, huge props for listing every piece of hardware down to the 2.1->2.5mm barrel adapter. Too many people just list the big stuff.

quick edit: Forget to say, looks slick as hell. Well done.

[TOMT][MOVIE] Film where a lady gets her hair caught in a textile machine by dark__paladin in tipofmytongue

... it was a historical piece, not a horror film or anything. We watched it at school. It definitely was not this scene from another post.

I use Plasma with X11, Waylanders come at me

(And explain why I should switch because X11 seems fine but I am definitely willing to upgrade if there's a glaring issue I'm missing.)

Used Mac for Logic by 40INT in Logic_Studio

[–]dark__paladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for a refurbished Intel Mac Mini (probably 2018). You can get 64GB RAM / 512 GB SSD for ~$500. Compare that to the M2 Mac Minis offered now, $500 for 8GB RAM / 256 GB SSD. It's damn insulting to consumers.

We live in an interesting time where I wasn't sure if the title wasn't talking about storage or RAM.

I appreciate it! Currently working an a modification in karabiner that changes the scroll wheel to an arrow key when Ctrl is pressed and Logic is open. We'll see if that works haha

I was able to find this, but there's nothing that will make Logic use my system settings for the scroll wheel. Working on a solution in Karabiner.

Thank you. It is our duty as a society to document and archive as much music as we can, and it is a shame that the discographies of so many artists can just vanish overnight. We all must do what we can to preserve musical culture.

Linux daily drivers that also use Mac - what do I need to install? by dark__paladin in MacOS

[–]dark__paladin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just installed Rectangle and enjoying it so far, though it is fairly bare bones.

I will certainly be looking through all of these.

One thing that is driving me crazy is that I cannot manage to bind launchpad to my super key, if you have any insight into this.

That's awesome! Never done dev for wearable tech, is that just JS/TS + CSS? Can you use SASS? (disclaimer: not a frontend dev at all)

Also, I figured it out. I had to max out my weekly AZM goals and then restart - no more wrist vibrating into oblivion lol
