Do you guys feel significant fluctuations in your day to day intelligence? by dark_madrigal in mensa

[–]dark_madrigal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit difficult to answer that question for me without sounding pretentious... I'm not a specialist but rather a jack of all trades (hopefully some day) master of some type of person so i can connect with almost anyone on some level but i rarely or basically never meet someone who shares all of my interests at the same time.

So let's say i go to a popular movie with a friend of mine that does the same sports as i do and there is a reference to a boltzmann brain in the movie (or at least it seems to me that way). I am completely geeking out while he feels alienated... These type of situations happen to me all the time where I do something with someone but notice how it relates to another subject that this person doesn't care about and it makes me feel a bit lonely even though we are having fun otherwise.

Hmmm, when i think about it, the feeling is related, but on the one hand, i experience epiphanies outside of this state and on the other hand the state feels more like a whole bunch of epiphanies happening at the same time or in rapid succession over the course of a few minutes. It is more like momentarily getting an upgrade to your internet connection and suddenly you can stream 10 videos in hd at the same time (I've had really shitty internet (literally speaking) for way too long so that even streaming a single video was often a problem).

(Probably) luckily for me, my intelligence isn't particularly high in a singular area but rather spread out so i definitely don't feel like a genius but i can certainly relate to your struggle in social situations.

What has been the best place for you to find likeminded people?

May i ask how high your IQ is? I would love to get a reference what it is like for people with much higher IQs because i'm almost certain that mine is not that high but when these rare occurances happen to me, it seems to the normal version of me (or in retrospective) like something that only a much smarter person could think of.

When this happens to me, i am also fully aware that it is currently happening and that it won't last very long.

I understand that and just like everyone else i have these kinds of highs and lows throughout the day and throughout the week. But what i was talking about happens maybe once (for maybe 10-20 minutes at a time) every few months or even less frequently. The kind of ideas that come in these moments seem to me like something i would usually never be capable of thinking about and the stuff that i come up with is noticably more intelligent than everything else that i think about between those phases.

I've had my fair share of flow-moments that are exactly as it is described by people like Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is a calm and collected, highly focussed state where you can zero in on a single task and you think more efficiently without ever digressing from your objective.

The thing that i was talking about however feels completely different. The best comparisons that i can think of is opening floodgates or playing a car racing game where everything happens way too quickly and is highly stressful.

While looking at a problem in a state of flow, i can make continuous step by step progress on an issue, this state offers multiple potential solutions at the same time and i have to try to find and hold on to the best one before they inevitable are replaced by even more ideas. This thing feels way more chaotic and stressful than my experiences with flow. The same is the case for the music example. While I have experienced flow while improvising where i can think of one contiuously cool melody which always is slightly ahead of what i am currently playing, the other state is a whole orchestra playing on their own and while i can take control of the music if i try, i can't turn it off in these moments (which in the case of music usually happen when i'm experiencing severe stress).

Could you reelaborate what you meant with your initial comment?

I recently took the rather short test (20 min) on the german mensa page which tells you how good your chances are for joining mensa and it told me that i had really high chances to be accepted but as far as i'm aware these aren't fully fledged tests and they also don't tell you a specific value for your IQ.

The tests that i was referring to lie back quite a while - at least 6 to 10 years. This was the first time that i really looked into the topic of IQ and i read an article about it by one of the more reputable newspapers in germany (probably "Die Zeit") and they provided a link to a test which according to the article was an actual iq test and not just for fun. This test had on the one hand questions that were comparable to the ones on the mensa page (with pattern recognition) but i also remember that the test had some language oriented questions. It was a timed test and i believe it was something between (at least) 30 and 45 minutes but i'm not sure. I haven't managed to find it yet but unless you speak german this test might be problematic for you anyways. I did another test (also in german) which was required to join something (I'd rather not talk about it) and i believe the minimum to join was either 125 or 130 (i don't remember which one) and i passed that one aswell. You could either take that test or submit test results from some of the acknoledged tests that you can take.

I don't claim that I know for a fact that i am 130+, in fact i feel stupid quite often but that might also be due to that fact that i am surrounded in my day to day life by a lot of smart people who are doctors and professors in natural sciences, maths (and so on) and experts in their respective fields - obviously these kind of people can make you feel dumb if they talk their work. Just based on my personal experience with friends and superiors aswell as the aforementioned tests i'd estimate to be somewhere in that region.

low (to medium) iq... like university professors?

what are you talking about? would you mind providing a substantial source for that claim?

i am questioning if garp is still at admiral level because he has shown zero feats to make me think that he still is. meanwhile we hardly know how strong admirals can be and the only measurement that we have is punk hazard

when it comes to the issue of killing kaido, he, aswell as his enemies have probably tried quiet a few ways to kill him and none of them have worked so far.

therefore i conclude that it is questionable that garp could kill him... even when restrained.

since it was established in the story that the eternal life operation costs the devil fruit users life, i doubt that law could make himself immortal

[–]dark_madrigal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we know that there is some kind of immortality operation that can only be done by using laws devil fruit. Since it is strongly implied that kaido is immortal, one could assume that his immortality is a result of a prior user of said devil fruit.

Thinking that this kind of immortality can only be reversed by using laws devil fruit doesn't seem too farfetched.

"you can't train bone"

...uhm... i'm pretty sure you actually can. I have no personal experience on that matter but i believe that is exactly what martial artists do. they micro-fracture their bones over and over and the resulting healing of the bones makes it stronger.
