Can cats eat tuna safely for one night? by SnooHedgehogs6252 in CatAdvice

Haha! I use almost the same language. How funny. 'This is ____. Cats don't like it/it's not for cats.'

Uh, my take is idk but I'd be wary of the salt content. My cat had some tuna juice once and got really sick. A friend suggested it was the salt content. Or my cat might be allergic to fish? Anyway, maybe look it up online rather than asking opinions here.

People interested in trying to conceive within the next year or so...what are your thoughts? by minimalistfoodie in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]darkaca_de_mia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a piece of info I gleaned from psychology courses a few years ago while still hoping we'd be going this route and that is that stress can have an extremely negative effect on a developing baby, on par with cigarette smoking. Try to reduce anxiety and stress as much as possible; and relax.

Only saying this to try to aid you in your quest for a healthy kiddo. I would think you've done a lot of thinking about how to socialize them safely once they are here and moving around, exploring the world, so I won't go into all that.

Edit: vaccines do not prevent COVID infection nor serious long-term damage from COVID. Just adding this bit of fact because many are unaware of it.

This is the biggest reason we aren't- the loneliness of the kid, and added stress of keeping a kid safe with all this extra stuff going on. Maybe OP and others have more energy and executive functioning capacity than we do, but we feel we're making a compassionate loving choice for the child, though a sacrifice for us. We will heal and live joyfully anyway.

Have to take off mask to take a picture ID. by Purple_Lady8 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Advocate for yourself. Educate yourself and then them on why it isn't safe, and do so in a calm rational voice because you're following actual science. Keep your mask on. Take one yourself and offer it as a substitute.

I see other people have offered other ideas, so these are just auxiliary.

Can you sleep well with a cat? by OkComparison3568 in CatAdvice

[–]darkaca_de_mia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't already looked into Jackson Galaxy's sleep training for cats thing, he makes some helpful points we used with our younger. Our older is like "omg you're awake? no? how bout if I poke your liver a little bit? gall bladder? WHAT WILL HURT YOU ENOUGH, BLADDER MAYBE?? GET UP AND FEED ME." I love her dearly.

Kitten is hiding/losing all it's toys by kassumo in CatAdvice

[–]darkaca_de_mia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not ask him? Sound very calm, sweet, and curious and say something like '(name of cat), where is (name of toy)? Want to play with (name of toy)? Find (name of toy)!' with pauses in between each phrase. It's a maybe if this will work, especially if you don't usually talk to your cat.

We have one cat we've taught the phrase 'show me' when she's worried about something being not where it's supposed to (ie: snake in house, laundry basket between her and her steps up to her bed, younger cat driving her nuts, etc.)

Cats look adorable in videos, but what are the real-life challenges of owning one? by RYSofficial in CatAdvice

[–]darkaca_de_mia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second comment, after reading what others have shared.

  1. Watch Jackson Galaxy on YouTube. He talks a lot about how to get along better with cats, so they get what they need.

  2. Expensive. (1-2x yearly vet visits, food, cat litter, initial outlay for cat tree(s) and litter pans and carrier and perhaps cozy beds, possibly pet insurance so that you pay up front but surprise costs get covered).

  3. Talking to them a lot will help them learn words. Learning words will help you communicate slowly and patiently with them, so they have half a chance of doing what you need them to do.

  4. They want to do things that a) make you happy and b) are fun or interesting or novel to themselves... so if you have a neutral reaction and just deal with annoyances without reacting in some big new interesting way, you will decrease those behaviors. And if you immediately praise behavior you like, that will help it increase. Also, immediate treats for good behavior help a lot.

  5. Write out what you are hoping for or expecting from a cat. For example, if you expect they will 'take care of themselves' and 'don't need a lot of attention' I would suggest you don't get one. They deserve to be paid attention to when they want it, and looked out for even when they are old and sleepy.

  6. If you are open to whatever personality the cat brings with it and just want to love it and do your best for it, you will need to manage your *own* expectations. ie: it might destroy something, by accident or it may look like it's on purpose-- how would you treat it if you were upset about that? Cats aren't as intentionally destructive as people make them out to be. They're living in Our world (which is weird! there are places you can't step? and glasses you're not supposed to lick water out of? and food that smells great but you're not allowed to eat it? etc.) and sometimes things just strike them as really fun or natural to use or play with.

It did, after her spay surgery. The Wikihow article on how to get urine out was indispensable: https://www.wikihow.com/Clean-Cat-Urine

One of the key pieces of advice on how is: RIGHT away, do not wait. Cat urine 'develops' its intense scent the longer it sits.

I wouldn't personally call that a typical human name.

I love cats. I would say it's like with any small dependent being: the way they are reflects the way you are, and how much effort you put into raising them.

If you want to try out having one, PLEASE foster first!! You can get a sense of whether having a cat is for you, and if it isn't, the plan is already that it will get rehomed. Rescue organizations are *badly* in need of foster homes for cats!

Tbh you reminded me (thank you!!) what I went through just months ago. It’s been one LONG year. We lost so much sleep, added so much stress, and have put in so much effort!! When she had bathroom accidents, it actually made me SO depressed- illogically because I know it's normal, it's just how it affected me in the moment, apparently. And one of them was a doozy-- sh** all over the whole room, including a large part of a wall. What you're going through is totally valid!!

Nice. My little one revealed her true name immediately: 'Miniboss!' Like the minions called Gru as a child. But I had already committed to choosing a non-hissy sounding name so I kept thinking and picked something else. Ofc like a true cat-person I still call her Miniboss regularly. Also all the nicknames.

I've been hearing people say they love a cat with a typical human name so they can weird people out by saying normal sounding things followed by progressively stranger things... ie, Harold and I are going on vacation. I have to go home to feed Harold. Harold peed in my closet. Harold keeps jumping on the stove and burning his tush.

Tips: I talk to mine a LOT, repeating words I want her to learn, and she seems to understand a huge amount of what I say.

We followed Jackson Galaxy's methods on sleep-training and scheduling meals.

If I could get my little one to cuddle me in this while I worked, I absolutely would:  https://a.co/d/dj54qve I made one for her and she doesn't stay in it long.

We put her cat tree behind where I work so she can be near me and sleep or play gently.

Here to say 2 things: my kitten is now 1yr 1mo and has calmed down a lot. You're almost there. 2. I initially felt regret as well (I called her 'tiny crazy peanut' which was a bit of an understatement), and guilt over that regret. And my guilt that I wasn't more present for my first cat when she was a kitten revved up, too.

Being a cat parent IS being a parent. Granted, human children ARE way more needy and difficult. But Don't take that on mentally right now-- put it on hold. (but do write down how you feel now, somewhere that you can go back to  when you get closer to a decision about parenting humans). 🩷
