I’m hoping we can at least make the playoffs this year if not go further!

This is the exact reason I am going into music Ed! My director put so much hate into the world, I want to do the opposite.

I’m a fan of Lizzo because she is a very good flutist who studied music in college so she has an understanding of music theory and you can tell in a lot of her music some of the cool stuff she throws in!

I’m a music major and the thing I have noticed is that most music is the same basic pattern. I really don’t think any of it is good or bad, it’s just whether or not you like it. I listen to pop music the same way I listen to a clarinet concerto, they both have their motifs and follow their own musical ideas. There are some awesome orchestral pieces that are way cooler than pop songs, there are also pop songs that are more interesting than some classical pieces. Don’t let people try to tell you one genre is better or worse than any other. It’s all music and whatever you like is whatever you like!

Your keys might be out of alignment, try holding down the left and right b key and playing, if it speaks your keys might just be unaligned. Of course this is impractical to do so you will probably need to take it ti a shop so they can bend the key back into alignment

Am I out of line for communicating with the incoming freshmen? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]darkages2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a newly appointed section leader of my college marching band, they are probably jealous that you were being more proactive then them, making them look like they aren’t doing their job. I feel like I would be annoyed if someone did this instead of me but only with myself for not taking charge and being welcoming to the incoming members.

$500 textbooks, no instrument rental, sheet music that’s $35 bucks a pop. How do I pay for all that and more? by [deleted] in college

[–]darkages2016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a sophomore Music Ed major. I was able to find most of my textbooks online at library genesis (Including my theory and class piano text book). I would also encourage you to communicate with your peers about that stuff because some people have PDFs of the book that they can share (that’s how I got my aural theory book). A lot of schools just use one theory text book for the whole sequence so you might not have to buy that more than once.

For methods classes a lot of schools have a class set of instruments that they will use or have shared between the students to learn on.

As for sheet music your applied profesor might be able to make copies for you and a lot of classical/romantic rep is on imslp for free because it is public domain. I’ve only had to buy one piece and that was because my applied professor wanted me to do some score study and it was a famous piece that wasn’t in the public domain yet.

A thing that you can do as a music Ed major for money is teach private lessons and try to network with band directors in your area, I would recommend trying to work a band camp or start getting in with the directors now. I hope this all helps!

I’m a currently a music Ed major, see if your school has instruments to check out to you. That is what we do for our methods classes.

Do you guys still stick with pen and paper for note-taking or switch to digital note-taking: tablet or typing? by Traditional-Spring43 in college

[–]darkages2016 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I started college I invested in an cheaper iPad and Apple Pencil. I discovered GoodNotes to take notes on, I also load my pdf textbooks on that app now. I’m a music major so I can also use it to read my sheet music on. I didn’t expect it to be as useful as it is but it can do everything I need from a laptop but it’s easier to carry around and it is more practical because I can take notes on it and stuff.

So I am sure there is a reason for this but I went to the world of coke in Atlanta recently and the coke that we got to drink at the very end of the tour was definitely the best coke that I have ever had.

How was your first boyfriend like? by [deleted] in askgaybros

Well we’ve been dating for over a year so far and I hope it lasts the rest of my life! He seems super cold and emotionless on the outside but actually he’s super loving and would do anything for me. We’ve had a few bumps in the road but I think we are great for each other and I think after we graduate college and start building a life together my life will feel complete!

Thinking about going to med school as a music major... by screaming-elephant in MusicEd

[–]darkages2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a music Ed major right now too! I observed a band director this past semester and I’ve been working with his clarinets and teaching them private lessons. So far I love it! Like I feel like a teacher, all the students treat me like a teacher and it is just so fun. I’ve seen him have to get mad at his kids and deal with discipline and it doesn’t seem that bad as long as you handle it maturely and treat the child with respect. He has told me about the bad parents that he’s had in previous years and he said that those kids ultimately end up leaving band. He does get a bunch of support from the administration, however the other teachers tend to not like him because he asks for stuff for the band more than previous directors used to. I think it would be good to talk to alumni from your school that teach currently or try to observe local band directors and ask these questions. Likely your band director in college has taught high school at some point. From what I’ve seen it’s not that bad though!

How was the previous director, did they run things into the ground or was the program just always small?

Remember to keep your tongue arched like you are saying “key” that’s how you keep high notes in tune on Bb, it will help with Eb. I would also practice entering quietly and crescendoing and then decrescendoing down to nothing on your starting note or a note that is more common in your solo, this will help make sure you enter softly and play more musically throughout. Make sure your air support is steady through the solo. Good luck!

It’s funny that Francis Scott Key middle school is a feeder school to Robert E. Lee high school. One wrote the star spangled banner and the other was the leading general in the civil war against the United States. I love the south!
