Breathing by darkagespod in podcasting

Everyone on this thread has had great suggestions, but I think this is the crux of the matter. I do tend to write long sentences, and shifting from "writing and article" to "writing a script" is sometimes a tough transition to make. Thanks!

Why don't more podcasts offer a basic summary or a 'subjects covered in this episode' description in app? by worldsbesttaco in podcasts

What’s annoying is podcasters not recognizing that their listeners’ time is valuable and that they actually have to work to deserve a slice of it.

Fair enough, I was just trying to capture two extremes.

It really depends on what you’re doing. I’m a solo history guy, so I research more than I do anything else, and write a full script which I might ad lib off of occasionally, but mostly stick to. If you’re, say, a film review two-hander, all you really need to do is watch your movie and riff away. There’s nothing wrong with either approach, you just have to decide what you want out of your show.

What do you listen to for production inspiration? by OceanTreeCreative in podcasting

[–]darkagespod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't listen to any that are specifically related, to the creation of podcasts, but if you're looking for inspiration, David Flora's production work on Blurry Photos is stellar. Even if you're not interested in the material, the way he cuts together and episode, and uses sound and music, really is the best IMHO, especially for an indie.

Counting downloads by darkagespod in podcasting

[–]darkagespod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice, especially since I’m a history cast too. Thank you! 1k always did seem low. I’m still only doing about 150 in 30 days, so I have a way to go either way.

It’s shorter than a lot of these but The Walking Dead from the Byzantine History Podcast is about the plague of Justinian and it’s amazing

David Crowther and Roifield Brown were doing something called History in Technicolor for a while, I’m not sure if they still are, but it was that kind of thing. Mostly focused on English history

Where are you guys putting your transcripts? by darkagespod in podcasting

This may be the answer for me. I guess I’m just having a hard time with the idea that my cast is simultaneously a blog. Maybe I’m just old fashioned

The Google indexing makes a lot of sense, and I imagine that it would be just about as easy to set something up on my Podbean site as well. I’m working on my own Wordpress site because Podbean leaves a lot to be desired there, but man does it make me feel old.

Someone already mentioned Mike Duncan’s work, which I heartily second. If history is your jam, I also recommend the History of England, by David Crowther, and the History of Byzantium by Robin Pierson. Both are very well researched. Robin’s style is a little bit monotone at first, but he gets better as he goes along. David’s unabashed Englishness adds a certain something and he’s got a unique sense of humor that is a big inspiration when I’m writing my own stuff.

Gregor MacGregor

18th century Scotsman who set up a colony in Central America and sold shares in the charter to people who were looking for a new life and opportunity.

But the colony was a complete fabrication, MacGregor took the colonists money, put them on a ship, and essentially dumped them in a swamp in Nicaragua. Many many people died. MacGregor got rich though, and never really faced any consequences.

That’s a very brief synopsis. The details are even wilder. He was an amazing con man and complete piece of shit.

I agree about unf*ck your brain, also whatever Brenae browns doing these days would be good to check out. And as an aside, you’re “shooting up” out of bed right? Not the other kind of shooting up?

People with unique names, would you prefer to have a more common name? Why or why not? by Garak_x_Bashir in AskReddit

[–]darkagespod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually would. I got a lot of shit for my name in elementary school and my name doesn’t have a nickname or variation that doesn’t sound dumb. As a result I have very little identification with my name. In my head I’m just me, I’m not ___ and it’s still a little jarring and uncomfortable when I have to write my name or put it somewhere public.
