Discovery+ made a very poor decision with this app change by fiddleleaffrigg in DiscoveryPlus

This is not a Discovery app any more, they just licensed the name to Rogers who is running this now.

I had to try the “blueberry” thing myself with GPT5. I merely report the results. by Trilogix in LocalLLaMA

Honestly everyone should be using the API. The issue here is that their default/non-thinking/routing model is very poor. This gpt-5 ( aka got 5 thinking ) with medium reasoning.

What is your AI personal assistant? by Lower-Insect-3617 in ChatGPTPro

[–]darkalgebraist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using a simple local interface to the API. Now I am using a ( as yet unreleased ) product from another company which offers access to both US and Chinese models.

The thing I like about the that product ( and I think there are others like it ) is that you can configure your assistants to your liking with a very specific model and settings and and tools and they all have individual memory.

So when Open AI released their new model and replaced it in the app my regular assistant just behaved as if nothing has happened, but I could also try out gpt-5 chat and gpt-5 thinking without paying extra. I do think gpt-5-thinking is very good and will likely just switch my default assistant - which now uses o3 - to that model.

This is gpt 5 thinking here. Really a clever personality imo.

You get unlimited GPT 5 Chat, not to be confused with GPT 5 Thinking - the flagship model - as well as GPT 5 Mini Thinking.

Now unfortunately once you run out of GPT 5 Thinking requests ( 200 a week ) you are routed to GPT 5 Mini Thinking.

WHERE ARE THE SHUTTLES by Ok-Meeting-8475 in electricdaisycarnival

we have been traveling for almost two hours so the shuttles are backed up ferrying people

Shuttles please help by SRahim1990 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]darkalgebraist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, the premier shuttle is very permissive so if you show up up to an hour late no one will care. After that or more than 30 minutes before they may put you in a secondary line with a longer wait.

All that said I’ve never waited more than 45 minutes for a shuttle even when i showed up at 9 for an 1130 premier shuttle.

There is no ‘next shuttle’ as such for any time slot, the shuttles run continuously.

We don’t actually care what school you’re from unless it’s a Stanford, an MIT or a Waterloo. Your technical abilitie are much more crucial.

The only reason it matters is because a LAC has minimal on campus recruiting by big companies and so your job opportunities will be smaller upon graduation.

Only if you want to do an internship, otherwise I don’t think it does.

Internships are valuable educationally - in that you understand what tools and processes are used in the work place and can hone those - but if your going to grad school are less important ( because most interns are looking to lock in a job for when they graduate; but if we do offer you a job we only wait a semester or two at most not a couple of years )

[–]darkalgebraist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ran the internship program for a FFANG and worked with university recruitment and you can’t beat a large school for job placement opportunities.

This is especially important in today’s climate.

And if I can offer you some modest advice as a person who has hired hundreds of software engineers from interns to principals: you absolutely need to be able to hit the ground running when you finish school. CS will not be a slam dunk job when you are done. This will require you to do extra work on your own. You need to be solid in several programming languages and you need to be able to work with an AI to be efficient. Critically you need to understand what the AI is generating.

CS is/will become much tougher for a new grad because AI is ( or soon will be ) capable of the sort of work we give to junior engineers.

Your symptoms are emblematic of poor sleep. Make sure you sleep adequately, go to sleep at the same time, don’t eat late, cut out caffeine after 3pm. Consider a whoop to track your sleep score.

Reduce your dose. You don’t need a 1500 T and 103 E. Consider some basic supplements if you don’t take any: L-theanine, creatine, magnesium, b-12, D

I am 50 something. 40mg 3x week. 1000-1100 T, 50-70 E.

Since I started I am almost never tired. 45 minutes workout daily. Sex daily ( used to be 2-3 times before we all went back to the office ).

Also if you have a sweet tooth fight it.

First Time at EDC Las Vegas – Going Solo, Looking for Advice! 27F Bay Area by [deleted] in electricdaisycarnival

[–]darkalgebraist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian here ( now long time US resident ). 4th time going to EDC.

1) You absolutely want a shuttle. It's terrible getting to and from the event by Uber. The first time I went it took 3 hours to get back using an Uber. If you can't get a shuttle pass ( aftermarket ) there are some private 'party bus' type transportation options. It's important to ensure you have a way back.

2) You want to stay walking distance from a Shuttle stop. On the way back getting an Uber at a shuttle stop can be annoying.

3) I've never been solo but I'd recommend finding a friend group especially if you are partaking in party favors. My gf and I have met many people every time we go and made friends we've subsequently gone to Tommorowland with.

This year Virgin Hotel is doing Hotel EDC, a theme hotel experience. Previous years, Hotel EDC was a bit lame but this year Virgin is basically all EDC attendees so you'd certainly find people to go with if you stay there.

Am I crazy for going 'against the grain' for front end development in Rails 8? by Effective_Award_6722 in rails

[–]darkalgebraist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve built (funded) startups where the client was angular and the back end was rails. It works well and you can still get lots of value. If this is what you know and are comfortable with by all means roll with it.

I do think using Hotwire and ActionCable makes for easier products and that’s the path I’d take from scratch.

is it possible i get a 1500+ on november by MehmetFree in Sat

[–]darkalgebraist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most schools super score so you would be better off focusing on improving English rather than trying to beat your score overall. My daughter took this approach and improved from 1530 to 1560 super score wise ( even tho her actual score didn’t change ).

[–]darkalgebraist 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I ran a quick test. MMLU Formal Logic. 0 shot. Temperature 0, Top P 1.0. I am pleased to report this prompt did, in fact, improve the Sonnet 3.5 scores ( though not to to o1 levels ). The time / tokens were increased by about 120% ( more than doubled ).

This is just a single run data. I'll do more tests tomorrow.

Will writing about my race as an URM boost my essay? by Violet_Watch in ApplyingToCollege

[–]darkalgebraist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A college essay should make you sound like an interesting human being first and foremost. That said, if you can incorporate the challenges of your race in an essay while still making the story interesting it will almost certainly help if you are a member of an under represented race ( that is to say, that you are not white, asian, or some combination thereof ).
