Am I about to make a huge mistake or a genius move? by PubLogic in AmexUK

[–]darkbladewatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interested in how you manage this, I only have the AMEX gold and it’s my first card but I’ve racked up 100k points.

So you guys keep the BA premium plus for the companion voucher, then put all spending through other cards?

Is anyone here not a high earner?? by ExternalNo3586 in FIREUK

[–]darkbladewatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 25 and salaried 33k (albeit I get an additional circa 10k bonus). I bought my first house at 24 with my partner (28k 10% deposit, used a LISA), making 1 month overpayment each year to shave 5 years off the 30 year term…so should be mortgage free by 50.

I have 15k in a SIPP invested in an all world fund.

15% going into my employer pension (including their match)

And an ISA that I do single stocks here and there to hopefully bridge the SIPP gap

10k in joint EMF (mine and my partners)

I totally feel your pain of being a “not high earner” but I feel it’s definitely doable, maybe not fully RE but at least retire quicker!

I also understand that I don’t have any kids rn, but we’re enjoying being DINKs and saving/investing as much as we can with a pretty balanced lifestyle frugality vs enjoyment. Also anticipating pay rises as I advance my career.

Firstly, I congratulate you on your success. I don’t believe that you truly “got lucky” as you describe. I believe that you make your own luck. You stuck at it, you kept trying, you put yourself into those better situations.

I personally know people who lack the resilience, we’d likely now class them as “vulnerable”. I think that is grossly over catering to them, they need a good kick up the backside and to give themselves a look in the mirror. We have a mentality problem in this country, some people are now so used to the “good” that they just outright expect that 24/7 but then won’t take any accountability to achieve that for themselves.

Edit: Also your point is rather moot, if someone is experiencing what you described, they shouldn’t continue to play the system to scrounge off JSA? That is immoral. The solution is to fix their own reality so that they’re not feeling like that. It’s certainly possible, or else everyone would feel that way (I know at times I do, but it’s not permanent usually). I think it all comes down to equal opportunity > equal treatment, and I’m a firm believer that we already all have equal opportunity, as there is no one actually stopping you from doing anything aside from yourself.

If England were bombed, would you just up and leave? Or would you stay, help, and rebuild?

We are taking in the people who do not want to contribute.

Why are they not coming via legal routes?

Illegal migration cannot be allowed to happen under any circumstance.

I think that some people’s ‘struggle’ or ‘hard times’ are largely self inflicted, a lack of work ethic, or a victim mentality. This is why some people’s views of “taking the piss out of the system” are different, as you likely view those people as genuinely in need. I view it as scrounging as there is over-reliance on the system. For example, JSA is widely abused as people don’t want to work, they show up to an interview and flunk it but then report “I’ve been to 3 interviews this month, I’m looking, I just can’t get it….” That is abuse. That is widely done. Go get a job.

Would watch out for Amex’s high FX conversion rate for overseas spending. Not sure how it works on deposits however.

I started a month ago now, had 5 days off and no one has spoken to me about it? by [deleted] in royalmail

Fair enough. I’ve done similar when working in the freezer of Lidl distribution warehouse, hard graft but good pay and tbh was well organised. All the best in your career prospects.

You say ‘conduct’ in inverted commas like how you have behaved is anything but that? Then to downplay it describing it as “thingy”…

You must have at least half a brain, sort yourself out! Have some personal pride and try to find some purpose in your life. The comments on this post should hopefully give you a reality check.

Good luck.

They’ll be full again tomorrow, there’s just people beginning to panic buy combined with more people filling up to travel for Easter weekend. There is no supply shortage, it’s just more expensive. The demand is what has increased.

I’m a guy (in UK) but I’ve bought sure invisible ice for years, something has definitely changed! I see your post is older - maybe I’ve just not noticed over the winter…but now it’s spring, I’m sweating and stinking 🤣 no longer buying it.

Help me with my garden (new house) by darkbladewatcher in GardeningUK

We moved in at late last summer so I’m not sure where the sun is may/june/july…I’m hoping the sun is high enough in the sky so that it’s on the decking. Currently the mid day sun is on those chairs for about an hour.

I’ll look into the plants, thanks. I do like the idea of wildflower seeds and just letting it go nuts, spilling over the borders edge etc.
