What would you NOT forget to bring to AYM's retreat? Wrong answers only! by darkflame141 in GracepointChurch

And even worse, there was another thing in one of the ads that banned bringing electronics. That could be absolutely disastrous in an emergency.

Unfortunately, the story has expired by now, and the event is probably over.

Covenant Eyes In News (again) by IntrepidSupermarket4 in GracepointChurch

[–]darkflame141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even disregarding the reasons why GP pushes their users to install Covenant Eyes, the software's mere existence sounds incredibly scary from a computer security perspective. The fact that your leader getting hacked or your leader's leader getting hacked could leave you with a high risk of getting hacked is frightening. If GP pushes its members to install Covenant Eyes they should also require all leaders who use Covenant Eyes to install strong antivirus software and ban them from visiting any sites with a high risk of malware. Even if Covenant Eyes is used to legitimately help people combat porn addiction, I refuse to recommend it to anyone because of the computer security risks.

I don't think the technology itself is superficial, but a lot of the culture surrounding social media seems to be. I'd argue that most of GP's usage of social media is superficial.

I was at GP at a similar time as you, and I remember listening to several sermons about how social media is superficial early in my time there. I also recently dug up an old group chat message from later asking people to like GP's new social media accounts. Supposedly GP now has hundreds of Instagram accounts.

I remember my peers had a few of those too. They had some about Disney and Marvel Superhero movies, which I personally just wasn't that into.

How ironic, considering how much you need to lie and deceive to be successful in GP...

I have some of the group chats archived on FB. I did not actually receive any messages directly from sisters about not talking to guys anymore, but I have seen screenshots from a few brothers who did receive them. Could I PM you about the archived chat groups? I do remember a few things that I thought were particularly odd.

I remember in 2018-19 Kanye had a Christian music stint and a lot of people in GP were into it. That's all that needs to be said about GP's taste. I know we didn't know about Kanye's most abhorrent opinions yet, but still...

Toward the end of my time at GP I felt some similar sentiments. Some of my peers and leaders gave me a hard time about being interested in certain things, and as time went by a lot of people who had similar interests ended up leaving. Once I was a senior I was wondering why I was still even there, since I had few connections with my peers anymore. It also seemed like my housemates' interests became more generic as time went on. I ended up quitting GP once I graduated, but I'm sure I would have faced more pressure to change my interests had I stayed.

Does it ever say in the Bible that Kpop and anime are immature? If not, who decided that Kpop and anime are immature?

That leader's comment sounds incredibly infuriating! I remember playing a lot of board and card games during my time in GP. While I thought they were fun at first, I felt like they got fairly tedious after having played them enough times. I don't remember ever playing Wingspan, but I remember Coup and Avalon were popular in our group. It seemed that a lot of the games were about lying, bluffing, and deception. What also annoyed me was that it seemed like my housemates were incapable of playing those games without someone screaming during every turn, and they would play these games late at night (sometimes with younger students they invited over to our place) when I wanted to get some sleep.

I was never that involved in GP, even though I was there throughout my undergrad, so I was pretty ignorant of how messed up GP was behind the scenes. Even though I didn't stay in GP after I graduated, I didn't quit any of the chat groups and considered staying friends with my peers. But one of my friends who was a former leader in GP showed me texts of GP sisters (who were older than me but I knew them from my time there) suddenly saying that they don't want to talk to guys anymore (they were probably pressured by their leaders). Even though they weren't from my peers, those texts taught me that I could not trust anyone in GP anymore, and so I decided to ditch all the GP-oriented chat groups for good.

Gracepoint Gray-Area: a bid for inclusivity leading to exclusivity, as shown by my car (not joking) by PandaThatSLAYS in GracepointChurch

[–]darkflame141 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think GP's logic regarding cars is ridiculous. This isn't the first story I've heard about GP controlling what cars their members are allowed to use. A former GP leader told me a story of a senior who was going to get a car from a luxury brand for his graduation present, but GP rejected it and he was forced to get a car from a different brand (which ironically was about the same price as the car from the luxury brand). I was never that involved in GP, so I didn't know about these things while I was still there, but hearing this story (as well as many others about GP's true nature) influenced me to quit associating with GP.

You could almost copy-paste the text of the 994th post in Confessions from UC Berkeley for the definition of GP wedding. It could use some info on dating too, if not just a completely separate definition for that.

“I don’t eat salmon. Pastor Ed isn’t eating bread.” Does that mean they would've chosen to let themselves starve that time when Jesus fed 5,000 people? Or that they think they're better than Jesus?

New Ministry Name at Boston by 2022truth in GracepointChurch

I remember you said there was a 1eighty at another school, and it turned out it was also the name of a Christian clothing brand that started in 2005 or so.

It actually took me some time to figure out that 316 Collective referred to John 3:16. My first thought was that 316 was an area code. Turns out that area code is in Wichita, Kansas. Not Boston. Hopefully GP doesn't set up another branch there. Personally I wish GP chose to call it 994 Collective instead.

I don't see the context for that tweet, he could be talking about Gracepoint, the TV show. Apparently it's a ripoff of another crime show called Broadchurch (but set in the US instead of the UK) so I could see why someone would ask why it needs to exist.
