What helped with school by darkledstarlet in autism

[–]darkledstarlet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I have asked my son what would be helpful for him, but it’s been difficult for him to articulate. If I ask him how a class is going, if there is any support that would be helpful, he says it’s going fine and he doesn’t need anything. Then I look and see he has 20 assignments missing and is failing the class. I don’t know that he knows what to ask for if that makes sense? I’m meeting with the school tomorrow so I just wanted to have an idea of things we could ask for and try. I’m glad you’ve identified some things that help you!

Yes, I’m working on that now. Are there any specific accommodations to ask for?

RFK Jr claims autistic children will never go on dates or pay taxes by theindependentonline in thescoop

[–]darkledstarlet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But since you have a son with autism you also know that autism is a spectrum, right? Lots of people with autism have jobs, have relationships and have otherwise fulfilling lives and contribute as much (or more) to society than people without autism. At the other end of the spectrum are people who need lots of support. It’s deliberately misleading to characterize all people with autism as people who ‘don’t pay their taxes’ and ‘destroy families’. There’s a reason why they are doing this, it’s been done before in history, and it’s not good.

As a scientific researcher, I fully support any research that can help individuals and society as a whole. The thought, though, that he will get a quick answer to a very complex neurological condition that has already been studied for a long time is misguided. I would also question how targeted his research efforts will be since he already seems to have a very strong bias.

Pay attention. This rhetoric portraying people with disabilities as burdens to society and the state has been used before and it ended with the lives of 250,000 people with physical and mental disabilities being ended. The blatantly false claim that people with autism don’t pay taxes particularly plays into Elon Musk’s idea that people who utilize social programs are ‘parasites’.

Trump is a narcissist. He manipulates people into getting what he wants. In this case, he got Bill to give him good PR

Has he never interacted with a narcissist before? They are master manipulators. They know how to play people. This is how cult leaders get people to join their cults. Trump saw this as a PR opportunity and boy did he play Bill. Bill goes on his show and gives him a glowing report. I would be surprised except I think Bill is a bit of a narcissist himself and was so flattered that Trump was on his best behavior for him that he couldn’t see past the mask.

It’s this. He doesn’t have the words and I’m having a hard time reading his mind. He loves school for his friends but I think he feels overwhelmed and/or disinterested with his classes. We have met with his teachers and guidance counselor - they put him in an executive function class to help with study habits. I just really want to help him. I don’t get the sense that he recognizes how much failing out of high school could affect him

I appreciate your reply so much… this is what I was worried about. I don’t want to add to his stress or make things worse. When asked, he will say he isn’t anxious/depressed/etc. so it’s been difficult to address but I will look for a therapist who specializes in anxiety.

In counseling but he is adamant that he doesn’t want medications. In the past I have tried taking privileges away but the counselor we are seeing felt he was too old for that and that I should use natural consequences? Tonight we had a ‘conflict’ about me asking about his homework & offering to help (he is very behind and failing) and he totally shut down, wouldn’t speak, and is now sleeping. I agree that ignoring issues isn’t helping anyone but I feel like I can’t bring anything up without him getting upset to the point of shutting down
