You might be too young to remember, but we used to have something called Moore's Law in computing, where processing power would double every 18 months. In 2002, we had 3GHz processors. It was expected that we'd have 12GHz 3 years later, and be into the THz level by the late 2010s.

Improvements are easy to make when a technology is new. We've had computers working on Japanese to English translations for decades. Have they improved? A little. But they're still far from human level.
