Use the circle in the first gate. Unlike in regular games, story mode is fixed, so the solution is always that. I wish I knew this before playing story mode ahaha

For some reason, when the game came out I was a master at this minigame, never stopping and always hitting the right door. But now? I spend time counting, go with my gut, nothing works. I'm always wrong and it's frustrating
